Some showers and thunderstorms can be expected over the East Atlantic and the western parts of the British Isles in the wake of a cold front. A few hundred J/kg CAPE are created by steepening lapse rates near the upper cold core of the Atlantic trough. 0-3 km shear is considerably weak and locally 15 - 20 m/s shear from 0-6 km should be too low for organized severe convection.

Another region with a small possibility of thunderstorms is the western / southwestern Mediterranean on early Monday morning when the cold front has passed the Pyrenees. 700 hPa winds reach 20 - 25 m/s in this region and isolated strong to marginally severe wind gusts are not ruled out.

A small shot only but a slack low forecast to sit right over Ireland this weekend

Could we be seeing the first convective showers of the season springing up? Surface temps don't look to promising to allow this to happen but with a bit of wind shear who knows. :)

21.0°C at Casement at 4pm. There are some As lenticularis around, suggesting stability at mid levels, but with this much surface heating and dewpoints above 10°C I'd expect a few storms to crack off in the midlands in the next couple of hours, aided by uplift from the Wickllow mountains.

I think they're spurios detections. The Icelandic UK ADT network didn't detect any in that area today, and I'd trust that more. It's picking up some now in Donegal

Some nice activity in Kerry this afternoon, and some more heading for Cork city area in the next hour.

Posted Image

The mid-upper trough to the south will intensify slightly as it edges slightly further north over the next 24 hours, giving the far southwest a good chance of plenty of action.

There is a chance of some activity on Friday afternoon/evening over the northern half of the country.

http://www.irishweatheronline.com/news/thundery-outbreak-possible-friday-afternoon/13669.html

Quote:

Current indications suggest that we could see some heavy thundery showers develop on Friday afternoon, most likely in Connaught, Ulster and the north Midlands.

The low pressure centred to our west will advect a warm, moist aimass northwards over Ireland, with afternoon solar heating generating decent instability over land (CAPE in the 500-1000 J/kg range). A strong upper jet streak will lead to good deep-layer shear (up to 60 kts 1-8 km), which will help support convection in the southerly flow. Showers that develop over land in the south will grow as they move north over increasingly warmer land, with maximum activity likely in the north midlands and northwest by late afternoon. Equilibrium temperatures of around -30°C should ensure some of these showers will be thundery, and heavy downpours of rain and hail are possible. Activity should diminish late into the evening as the solar heating and deep-layer shear diminish.

With decent low-level instability present, there is a slight possibility of an isolated funnel sightning, especially near higher terrain, but boundary layer winds may just prove too strong for this to occur.

Storm Forecast From ESTOFEX
Valid: Thu 05 May 2011 06:00 to Fri 06 May 2011 06:00 UTC
Issued: Wed 04 May 2011 21:54

SYNOPSIS

Unseasonably cold air has spread into central Europe near the center of a mid-level trough. A frontal boundary is expected to the east over Russia. A ridge amplifies over western Europe, whereas a rather strong south-westerly jet affects north-western Europe.

British Isles

A quite warm and moist air mass advects into the British Isles with southerly low-level winds to the east of an Atlantic low pressure system. Latest Valentia sounding indicates nearly neutral lapse rates that will easily allow for weak CAPE due to daytime heating. Latest model output indicates weak instability over the southern and western British Isles on Thursday afternoon. Sea breeze convergences are forecast to assist initiation that will become more likely near a mid-level jet streak pointing towards Ireland. The severe threat is forecast to increase in the western parts where rather strong south-westerly winds are expected. Especially in the evening hours models suggest increasing low-level vertical wind shear (SRH 100 m²/s² in the lowest kilometre) that will overlap with some weak CAPE. This may support tornadoes, and some events are not ruled out. Limiting factor will be the rather weak low-level convergence, and a level 1 threat is not forecast. Storms are expected to weaken after sunset.

Widespread, heavy showers are again affecting much of Ireland today following one of the wettest weekends of the year so far.

13.5mm fell at Sherkin Island in southwest Cork yesterday, 15.9mm of rainfall was recorded in Ennis in the 24 hours up to 11am Monday, while Valentia recorded Valentia 36 mm (1.5 in) of rain in a 12-hr period on Saturday. Only 54.2mm of rainfall was recorded at Valentia for the entire month in 2010.

Radar shot from raintoday.co.uk radar at 10.15am today. Click for larger view

Thunderstorms also occured over the weekend. On Saturday evening and into Sunday morning there were scores of lightning strikes along the east coast. Most of the strikes occured offshore but some were recorded in coastal parts of Louth, Meath, Antrim, Down and Wicklow as well as parts of Donegal, Tyrone, Fermanagh and Derry. There were further reports of lightning last night in west Cork and south Kerry.

Heavy showers mixed with hail will continue to affect the country for much of today and overnight but an improvement is on the way.

Commenting on the coming week's weather, Irish Weather Online forecaster Peter O'Donnell said: " The weather will improve gradually as the week progresses with many parts of the country experiencing some decent dry spells by the end of the week. Monday will be the most unsettled day of the week but after this showers will become more scattered. The weekend will see showers return, especially across the northern half of the country. Into the following week, it will become slightly warmer in stages."

"As for today, there will be more heavy showers and a few thundershowers with hail in many central counties from north to south, 15-30 mms rain possible there. These showers will slowly move further east and arrive in the Dublin region and the southeast by early afternoon. Scattered showers in the west where there will also be some short sunny breaks", he added.

Meanwhile, ESTOFEX (European Storm Forecast Experiment) are forecasting a small risk of wind funnels forming over Ireland and the UK early this evening. "Diurnally-enhanced cellular polar-air convection should develop over the British Isles. It looks like LLS will increase in the early evening hours ... and although DLS should remain quite weak, a brief funnel or two cannot be discounted. However the loss of daytime heating should limit the duration of the severe threat. A LVL1 does not seem to be warranted."
