VALLEJO, Calif.—An earthquake with a confirmed magnitude of 3.7 has rattled the East Bay city of Vallejo.

The U.S. Geological Survey says the quake hit at 6:09 p.m. Wednesday about three miles south of Vallejo, or about 23 miles northeast of San Francisco.

A Vallejo police dispatcher said the quake was felt at the department's dispatch center, but police had no reports of injuries or damage.

The quake's epicenter was about 20 miles from Berkeley, where a series of quakes were recorded in October, but USGS geophysicist Rafael Abreu says it was too early to determine if Wednesday's quake was related to the earthquakes last fall.

4.0 quake jolts Missouri.

Posted Image

Residents across 13 states reported feeling a 4.0-magnitude earthquake that struck southeastern Missouri early Tuesday.

The U.S. Geological Survey reports the temblor struck at 3:58 a.m. Central time with an epicenter nine miles east-southeast of Sikeston, Missouri, and 16 miles southwest of Cairo, Illinois. The quake was at a depth of 3.1 miles.

It was felt in 13 states, with the furthest location from the epicenter being New Bern, North Carolina, more than 800 miles to the east, according to reports to the USGS. Besides Missouri, Illinois and North Carolina, residents in Pennsylvania, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, Kentucky, Indiana, Wisconsin, Kansas, Arkansas and Oklahoma reported feeling the quake.

Lonnie Thurmond, city administrator in East Prairie, Missouri, about five miles from the epicenter of the quake, said he'd gotten reports of things falling from shelves and off walls when the quake hit, but no reports of major damage.

But he said he expected his community would be getting reports of underground service line breaks over the next few weeks as that is what usually happens when quakes hit the area, which sits near the New Madrid fault.

"Some water lines will be broken," Thurmond said. "It's just inevitable."

Thurmond said the quake jolted the entire community awake in the early morning darkness.

"It seems like there was not anyone it didn't wake up," he said, adding that his father, who lives near the epicenter, told him it sounded like a meteor had hit.

5.9 magnitude earthquake sparks mall stampede in Philippines, causes some damage, hurting 23.

MANILA, Philippines - A 5.9 magnitude earthquake struck the southern Philippines on Friday, causing minor damage and a mall stampede that left at least 23 people injured, officials said.

Most of the injured were sent home after being treated for minor cuts. Two people who were crushed remained in hospital for observation, said George Tremedal, a hospital doctor.

The quake was centered 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) off Dinagat Island near southeastern Surigao del Norte province, said Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology chief Renato Solidum. No tsunami alert was raised.

"It was very strong. You could really feel it. You could see the vehicles moving. I could not control my body as it was moving," said Albert Lancin, a city health official.

Surigao del Norte Gov. Sol Matugas said 20 people had been hurt in a stampede at a mall packed with shoppers in the provincial capital, Surigao City.

Glass doors shattered and panicked shoppers surged out of the mall, which had only opened Friday.

A teacher and two students suffered minor injuries when they were hit by a cable that broke in a public gymnasium, Matugas said.

The Office of Civil Defense said minor cracks were observed in the mall and gymnasium.

Matugas said town mayors had been asked to alert village disaster brigades for possible aftershocks.

The Philippines is located in the Pacific "Ring of Fire" where earthquakes and volcanic activity are common.

A powerful 7.6-magnitude earthquake has struck southwest Mexico, causing residents in the capital several hundred kilometres away to rush out onto the streets.

The quake struck near the tourist resort of Acapulco, just after midday some 25 kilometres northeast of the town of Ometepec, the US Geological Survey said. Earlier it had estimated the magnitude at 7.9, before downgrading it to 7.6.

"There are no reports of serious damage by the quake," President Felipe Calderon wrote on his Twitter account.
Humberto Calvo, from Guerrero state civil protection services, said Acapulco was free of damage.

But he warned: "The problem could be in some areas between Guerrero and Oaxaca [states]. We're checking."

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said a destructive, widespread tsunami had not been generated but warned of possible "local tsunami effects".

"The earthquake is located inland from the coast," it added.

Telephone and power lines were cut off in the Mexican capital while local radio, carrying out checks by helicopter, reported no major visible structural damage.

It was one of the strongest quakes to shake Mexico City since 1985, when an 8.1 quake left between 6000 and 30,000 dead, according to officials and rescue organisations respectively.

Hundreds of houses collapse after 7.4 earthquake hits Mexico.

Mexico City (CNN) -- Hundreds of houses collapsed after a strong earthquake that rattled residents in southern Mexican resort towns and the nation's capital Tuesday, officials said.

The quake had a magnitude of 7.4, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

Its epicenter was about 15 miles (25 kilometers) east of Ometepec, Guerrero, the USGS said, and its depth was about 12.4 miles (20 km).

In the nearby town of Igualapa, officials reported that at least 800 houses had collapsed, the Guerrero state government said in a statement. There were no immediate reports of serious injuries or deaths.

More than an hour after the quake, residents in Ometepec were feeling aftershocks, said Francisca Villalva Davila, the city's comptroller.

"There are many cracked ceilings, many houses that collapsed," she told CNN en Español.

About five out of every 10 houses in the municipality, where about 50,000 people live, saw significant damage, the comptroller said.

"Tiles are falling. We are feeling constant aftershocks. It's shaking right now," she said.

The USGS initially reported the magnitude of the quake at 7.9, but later revised that figure downward. Mexican President Felipe Calderon said in a Twitter post it was 7.8.

Residents rushed into the streets after feeling the temblor in Mexico City, about 200 miles (320 km) away from the epicenter. Tourists and residents also felt the earthquake in the resort city of Acapulco.

Calderon said that there were no immediate reports of serious damage, and that the nation's health system was operating normally.

"There are some broken windows, much fear, much panic," he said.

Residents in the southwestern states of Oaxaca and Guerrero and the eastern state of Veracruz reported that phone service had been knocked out.

Multiple houses collapsed in the Ometepec area, but officials have no reports of deaths or injuries, Guerrero state Gov. Angel Aguirre told CNN affiliate Televisa.

Government helicopters were surveying the area, he said, and officials were preparing shelters for displaced residents, he said.

Authorities in Mexico City were surveying buildings, schools and hospitals to evaluate damage, Mayor Marcelo Ebrard said

A pedestrian bridge fell on a minibus during the quake, he said, but there were no injuries.

Some buildings had cracks and broken windows, he said in a Twitter post.

Earthquakes are a frightening experience for the more than 20 million residents of Mexico City, where about 10,000 people perished in the area after a massive quake in 1985.

The city, built on volcanic ash and clay, is particularly vulnerable to temblors.

A spokeswoman told reporters that U.S. President Barack Obama's eldest daughter, who was on a spring trip with classmates in Mexico about 100 miles away from the quake's epicenter, was not injured.

"In light of today's earthquake, we can confirm that Malia Obama is safe and was never in danger," said Kristina Schake, a spokeswoman for first lady Michelle Obama.
