At least 340 people were injured in the accident, authorities informed. BUENOS AIRES, Argentina — A commuter train crashed in Buenos Aires on Wednesday and local media reported that at least 40 people had been killed, while officials said some 550 others had been injured. Television station C5N quoted the head of the civil defense unit for the death toll. The train was unable to stop and slammed into barriers inside a busy, centrally located station during the morning rush hour, officials said. Hundreds of thousands of people travel into Argentina's capital city from the suburbs every day. "There are people still trapped, people alive," Argentina's Transportation Secretary J.P. Schiavi, said, according to BBC News. The BBC said local reporters had seen 12 bodies being taken from the wrecked train. Alberto Crescenti, the city's emergency medical director, said there were fatalities and that at least 550 people were injured. Advertise | AdChoices The commuter train came in too fast and hit the barrier at the end of the platform at about 12 mph, smashing the front of the engine and crunching the leading cars behind it. One car penetrated nearly 20 feet into the next, Schiavi told reporters at the station. Most damaged was the first car, where passengers make space for bicycles. Survivors told the TeleNoticias channel that many people were injured in a jumble of metal and glass. Windows explode Passengers said windows exploded as the tops of train cars separated from their floors. The trains are usually packed with people standing between the seats, and many were thrown into each other and to the floor by the force of the hard stop. Many people suffered bruises, and many with lesser injuries were waiting for attention on the Once station's platforms as helicopters and more than a dozen ambulances took the most seriously injured to nearby hospitals. "This machine left the shop yesterday and the brakes worked well. From what we know, it braked without problems at previous stations. At this point I don't want to speculate about the causes," Ruben Sobrero, union chief on the Sarmiento line, told Radio La Red. The motorman has been hospitalized and the union hasn't been able to speak with him yet, Sobrero added. In September last year , nine people were killed and more than 200 injured in a crash in Buenos Aires involving two passenger trains and a bus. Update ...... A police spokesman said 49 people had been killed, and injuring more than 600 others, Edited by Audi-Tek, February 22 2012, 06:47 PM.
