Especially young people were meant to gather new impressions, learn traditional seamanship, experience nature, adapt to life on board and learn about themselves. In 1986 the Sail Training Association Germany (S.T.A.G.) acquired the ex-lightship “Kiel” from the German Ministry of Transport. The Deutsche Stiftung Sail Training/German Foundation Sail Training (DSST) was founded and became owner and carrier of the ship. Sponsors are the S.T.A.G., Brewery Beck & Co. and Forwarding E.H. Harms GmbH & Co. Until 1988 many voluntary helpers converted the old lightship into a barque. She is subject to the highest classification regulations of the German Lloyd and possesses the Safety Certificate of the German Seaman’s Accident Prevention and Insurance Association (See-Berufsgenossenschaft) with a world-wide coverage for traditional sailing vessels. All offshore sailing enthusiasts, the young and the young at heart, are welcome on board of the Bark “Alexander von Humboldt”. The tall ship is particularly suitable for “Sail Training”, especially offering young people the opportunity to learn traditional seamanship, to cooperate in a team and to practice self-discipline and consideration towards others under demanding circumstances. Instead of catering toward individual demands, the focus is on team spirit. By visiting foreign ports, by participating in the “Tall Ships’ Races” and in diverse harbor festivals, the opportunity exists for meeting new people. This supports a tolerant attitude, an understanding of foreign cultures, and contributes considerably to intercultural communication. These are the basic principles under which the DSST operates the barque as a school at sea. Hundreds of adolescents, but also older sailing enthusiasts, take advantage of this opportunity every year. The “Alexander von Humboldt” is an established and seaworthy tall ship, not a luxurious passenger liner with staff and a bar. But she is snug, offering her own comforts. The ambience on board is influenced by her maritime experiences, gathered on many ocean voyages and especially on the journey around Cape Hoorn. Safety standards are high: equipment is continuously controlled and over-complies with mandatory requirements. Safety drills are regularly executed during every voyage. They are also offered to the volunteer deck crew on land. State-of-the-art nautical and technical equipment are on board, handled by an experienced deck crew. In case of headwinds, the powerful ship engine supports a punctual arrival in the port-of-call. During our voyages you temporarily become part of the crew and participate in working the ship. You learn the basics of traditional seamanship and experience the fascination of being propelled only by green sails. But you also enjoy your off-watch, sunning on deck with the others, swimming in the warm water of newly discovered beaches and exploring new ports, Islands or foreign countries. On the “Alex” you experience an active, unique sailing adventure, apart from mass tourism. The ship can take on 35 trainees. Accommodation on board is available in four- or eight-bunk co-ed cabins. All sanitary facilities, the galley, and the mess room are located in separate parts of the ship. A substantial library is available for avid readers.
