I don't like the idea of PRIDE with unified rules and unified (stacked) weight classes. K-1 has pretty much taken its place for me now anyways. I watch some UFC... but I am not a big fan of the cage. There are lots of UFC fighters I like though... CroCop (pre-UFC), Matt Hughes, B.J. Penn... Most of my favorite fighters are PRIDE/K-1. I prefer the grapplers like Shinya Aoki, Genki Sudo (before he retired), and Hideo Tokoro. My favorite fighter ever is Sakuraba. I like some of the standup too though like Gomi and Fedor. Who are your favorite fighters?

I can't really imagine PRIDE without knees/kicks to downed opponents and all of these other changes. I don't even know how they can continue to call it PRIDE when they are changing everything from the weight classes to the rules. I think that the ten minute rounds and scoring were formulaic to PRIDE's identity too. They may as well turn the ring into an octagon at this point. I also don't like how Zuffa/Dana have been treating some of the PRIDE fighters like Fedor. They are threatening to take away his belts now if he doesn't become Zuffa/UFC exclusive, and Fedor has always done cross-promotional stuff at home in Russia. The weight changes are what upset me the most though because they are really going to screw over a lot of fighters.

I've never seen a fighter with as much heart and devotion as this guy! You'll see a clip at the beginning of the video during the fight preview showing Hideo waxing floors. That's how Hideo made ends meet while competing in ZST: working as a janitor! Hideo did not train full time, had no substantial record, and here he was beign put up against the former Shooto LW Champ for his K-1 debut. One of the most beautiful MMA moments of 2005 had to be that spinning backfist KO on Nogueira coming from what was to many people a nobody and "tomato." Hrm why doesn't my HTML work. :psyduck:

They don't care about their hardcore fan base, they would rather have four times as many casual fans.

There was a Sports Illustrated issue a month or two back that had a feature on MMA. The cover of the issue showed two fighters -- not top-tier -- in the middle of a match with the cage in the foreground. The focus of the cover was not the fighters, but the cage itself. This is how MMA is being presented and marketed to the US and the rest of the world by Zuffa. We're encouraged to look at MMA as some barbaric cross between boxing and Mad Max's Thunderdome where two fighters are locked up like two caged animals. Whenever Dana says that they are trying to promote MMA as a sport, I just have to laugh, because there is nothing respectable about their marketing image. I think that the cage is the most impractical and illogical element of MMA as well and that at this point it exists solely to appeal to the lowest common denominator. You're right that casual fans are the only people that they want to appeal to and market towards. Most UFC fans have never even heard of Fedor. They probably never will either now that Zuffa owns PRIDE and is having problems ironing out their contract with Fedor. If they take away his belts I'm sure they will do everything else in their power to erase him from PRIDE history too. That is the worst part... not just the disrespect towards fans, but the disrespect and total lack of consideration for the fighters themselves.
