SAN ANTONIO, Texas (Reuters) - Texas has begun sending undercover agents into bars to arrest drinkers for being drunk, a spokeswoman for the Texas Alcoholic Beverage Commission said on Wednesday.

The first sting operation was conducted recently in a Dallas suburb where agents infiltrated 36 bars and arrested 30 people for public intoxication, said the commission's Carolyn Beck.

Being in a bar does not exempt one from the state laws against public drunkeness, Beck said.

The goal, she said, was to detain drunks before they leave a bar and go do something dangerous like drive a car.

"We feel that the only way we're going to get at the drunk driving problem and the problem of people hurting each other while drunk is by crackdowns like this," she said.

"There are a lot of dangerous and stupid things people do when they're intoxicated, other than get behind the wheel of a car," Beck said. "People walk out into traffic and get run over, people jump off of balconies trying to reach a swimming pool and miss."

She said the sting operations would continue throughout the state.

Yeah, as long as they're not driving or shooting someone it should be fine. I mean, if you can't get drunk at a bar, where can you get drunk? At home where no one can take your keys away? How smart is that?

It reminds me of a joke though. A police officer is stationed at a bar to make sure that people don't try to drive when they're drunk. So this one guy walks out into the parking lot, but he can't seem walk straight or stay upright for very long. Immediately the cop focuses all his attention on this guy. So the guy wanders around the parking lot, staggering from side to side, and tries to unlock about five cars while all these other men come out singing and dancing, obviously drunk, and drive away. So finally the guy finds his car and as he pulls out of the parking lot the cop flashes his lights and pulls the guy over. He administer a breathalizer test and the results come back as zero. The cop says "I don't get it. According to this test you don't have any alcohol in your system". The guy replies "That's probably because I haven't had a drink all night. I was just trying to get my friends on their way home."
