thanks for the props guys :)

i've got the bug again Marcus, which makes the Sydney trip even better.

the pink lighting is neon lighting out the front of the hotel @ Star City. that shot turned out really well considering it was shot from inside the room through a slightly dirty window

A bit off topic, but still in the photgraphy vein, I have a question about light boxes. Build or buy? I want one, but I'm not sure whether to shell out the cash for one, or build one of my own - because every person and their dog seem to have some sort of light box building tutorial if you google it.

Great photos by the way Scotty.

Mazoo, either-or. There are some cheap ones on ebay.

I build my own as I need them out of paper, lots of paper. I then use the remote flashes I have to either bounce light around the home made light box, or use them to shoot through the paper... all depends on the desired result. It's more out of laziness and being a tight arse that I haven't bought one. If you're going to use it a lot, buy one :)

Scotty, you know my thoughts on your pics... DOF! :D

I think I'm more inclined to try and build one - I have seen some fairly simple and effective building tutorials on the net, and I like the fact that if I do that I can play around with different light diffusers too. Paper, muslin, frosted plexiglass...I've seen them all used with different results.

I wouldn't be buying it for anything in particular, I'm still in my *farting about* stage with photography :awesome:

In that case, build build build. :D

And take many many shots. Learn the rule of thirds, and the relationship between focal length(zoom) and f-stop. :D

Photography is an awesome journey.

Thanks :)

Rule of Thirds I get, but I think I've got some reading to do regarding the f-stop LOL. Probably best to read when I don't feel like my brain is falling out of my ear.

Basically, think of it like this:

- Low F number means that you'll get a lot of DOF. ie, the thing that you focus on will be in focus while other things in the frame will be out of focus.

- The higher the F number the more likely everything will be in focus.

The trade off between the two:
- low F number = large aperture = lots of light let in = faster shutter speeds

- high F number = small aperture = not much light let in = slow shutter speeds necessary

I can find some examples and post up later.

That makes a LOT more sense than that other page. Thanks.

I'm a bit of a book nerd, so I'll probably pick up a few photography books too hehe.

I love books though. I find I skim through most, but find one or two pieces of advice or examples that stick with me and that I will find really relevant.

there's nothing wrong with reading, i'm just saying i reckon most of the knowledge you use will be learnt through experience & practise

dude, as Mazoo also said.... that is the clearest, most simple explanation of aperture ever.

cheers

@ NO Regret..... yeah i'd say thats a girl, as opposed to a dude with shaved legs and a ponytail :P
