it does make a mockery of M$'s initial assertion that they wheren't going to include a HDD in every console as it isn't necessary, consumers should have choice, that no one will be disadvantaged by not having a HDD in their console etc etc etc.... And by association, makes a mockery of the "arcade" and M$ grandstanding that it is cheaper than the Wii - sure, the arcade is cheaper than the Wii, but it's nerfed - see above. similarly.... I would wager that it won't be long before games start being released with either major features not available, or not playable at all, if you don't have the HDD...... shenanigans, I do call. |

Yeah, and the PS2 was going to give us Toy Story graphics. Reality hits and it's time for the spin of the past to die so we can move on. Or would we rather not have the update? The only thing I'm wondering about is how they're going to make it possible on the arcade systems, but to be honest, I don't even care enough to look it up. |

yup, the cycle of lies continues. I never expected from day one that M$ would honour it's promises about no HDD users never being treated as second class citizens, I've been a gamer long enough (and have enough common sense) to be able to see such claims as bullshit. Multiple sku's, where there's such a radical difference between the "base" and "premium" version, is always going to end in tears for some one. There is a difference between lieing about what your new console can do (toy story graphics, emotion engine etc), and releasing a sub-spec machine and assuring everyone they'll never be disadvantaged for buying the cheaper option. With the former, once the console's out it's fairly obvious that the "wild claims" where just that. This isn't even an 'upgrade' like 32X, sega CD, or a new type of controller. This is one set of consoles missing something that will exclude them from accessing key features, and which is incredibly expensive to 'retro-fit' (I don't think anyone will dissagree that Microsofts pricing for their HDD 'add-on' is taking the piss) It's like that little point with car pricing "*metallic paint extra", and then the only non-metallic option is white. Except in this case, a year or so later the manufacturer announces that there's an upgrade out that you'll need if you want to be able to drive on public roads, but it's only available to cars with metallic paint; but that's ok, if you're one of the minority that chose the cheaper paint, you can still drive on your own property - or upgrade to metallic paint...... All said and done though, at the end of the day - I'm not surprised, Microsoft isn't the first and won't be the last to do this, and it doesn't affect me personally cause I wasn't stupid enough to believe the lies in the first place. They better shut up about having "the cheapest console on market" though, as the arcade is in my eyes officially nerfed - except as a cheap way of replacing a dead box. |

??? Xbox360 - No HD, no MU = no saves... PS2 - No Memory card = no saves... (did these ever even ship with memory cards?) PS1 - same as above... If someone doessn't have an MU or an HD they most probably don't care enough about gaming to want to save their games, or care enough to be able to play some of the newer games (the ones that require an HD or MU), and if that's the case, I doubt they'd even care about the New Xbox Experience.
I disagree. It's more like a car manufacturer saying there are some "optional wheel-hubs" that can fit "special-alloy-wheels" for the base model, but cost extra. ...and on the models above, they come standard. Those that care about the way their car looks and drives but can't afford the higher models will think to themselves, "I'll go without for now", or they'll think, "I might buy some of those optional wheel hubs later on." Then the car manufacturer, a year later, comes out with new wheels that look really schmick, but they only fit those special wheel hubs. All those that paid extra get the new wheels for free. The ones that didn't get the wheel hubs will need to upgrade. But they knew that already... |

when you buy a car, you have the CHOICE to tick extra boxes for better stuff or buy the car as is. people knew they werent getting the HDD and couldnt save shit when they bought the Arcade box. we didnt go up in arms like this when games started having DLC, and Arcade SKU's couldnt save them. games still work on the Arcade SKU like they always have, and the old dash which has served us well for 2 years now WILL STILL WORK. in this world people get what they pay for. too many people expect shit for free & take things for granted. IT'S FREE PEOPLE! M$ didnt have to do this, and they certainly didnt have to do it at no extra cost to us. i reckon this update should only be for GOLD MEMBERS |

I've got a 256 mb card on me refurb. It has two profiles on it, tons of game saves and still plenty of room for this dash update. Of course I do have a second machine with an almost full HDD so I'd be stuffed without that

Yeah you can rip your CD's I think to WMA format ( I'm guessing there as WMA is Microsofts own format ). I had read somewhere there would be the ability to copy MP3, AVI files from a flash drive etc to the 360's HDD. Wish I had the link. But from the few pieces I've read from previewers have not mentioned that. I was hoping to stick a 120GB HDD on my refurb and copy all my MP3's straight onto it. ( I also wish they'd support FLAC goddamn it, some of us actually have decent stereo systems and don't want to listen to lousy lossy formats ) |

you all know how when in a private chat, and when a game needs an update you get disconnected? with the NXE and in a party chat, if someone disconnects because of a title update, they will automatically rejoin the party.... HELLA COOL! 8 player party chat - this is what i am most excited about

It's not in there that I've seen, and they do need to start offering up stuff pretty soon because the selection is a bit weak. |

Ok, now that I've poked around a bit, I have some annoyances to share. 1. The Marketplace. It sucks now. It's harder to find stuff, it takes bloody ages to load some things, and it's a whole heap of pretty in place of functionality. You can at least now see screenshots of stuff you might want to buy, and you'll have a good few minutes of staring at those screenshots to take it all in while the actual list of content loads up. I was hoping for a clearer New Arrivals section so that you don't have to go into every game to see if there's new stuff for it, but now it's worse. 2. Themes. We all just wasted a bunch of money. the stupid curved "ground" area means that 60% of the background is now covered by a boring grey. Your other pics from your themes come into play as you go into different menu's, but those menu's are all now in the middle of the screen and you see your pics for a whole half a second. 3. Messages. Your tag now sits up in the top right hand corner, and your gamerscore slowly cycles with your friends online and message list as to what is displayed. It would take up bugger all real estate to have it all there together, but no. To get to your messages, you have to go to My Xbox, scroll over to yourself, go into that menu, and then select your messages. There is an alternative that I will get to later. 4. Friends list. Scrolling through allt he avatars becomes a pain once the charm wears off. A persons name doesn't appear until you stop on their avatar. It makes hunting for people way down your list more of a hassle than it should be. Big friends lists are now alot more undesirable. 5. Avatars. How are they better than Mii's, other than being more details models? They're like a Mr Potato head to create. You just pick bits. There's no resizing and moving things around like on the Mii's. I can also pic a bunch of crazy eye colours, but hair colour has to be a shade of brown, black or blonde, basically. You also can't change the colours of the clothes at all. It's a limited selection, and when you do find the type of clothes you want, the colours usually aren't the best. You'll see alot of people wearing the same shit.... Really, this is a dash for the dumb. Like eveything in IT, and typically Windows, we keep losing functionality so that some whiny grandmother can work out what she's doing easier. Everything is now where a new user might look for it if they have no clue, but most of us are gonna have to poke around for a while. The real functionality is in the guide button. There, you can find all the missing stuff in our old blade format. The friends list even functions the old way in there! It's far more usable, and it's tucked away. I would rather have my old dash back and have new stuff added to it. (and the ads removed!) |
