Hey all,

Had some queries with the 360 Elite - since my XB RRoD'd as you know recently and I have to ship it back to get fixed for the second time :argh: .

Anyway, does the Elite have Optical out for audio as well as the HDMI inputs, as I'd use both so I can get the surround from the system I have rather than the plasma tv which is arse for surround.

As at the moment (well I did :sigh: ) I use the Components and Optical for audio through the Premium console connectors.

I was thinking of just buying an elite hoping it would be newer parts or at least bits inside to prevent the RROD happening again (doubt it but one can hope).

Any thoughts?

Thanks,
James.

Yes. HDMI is on board, optical out is via a breakout cable/box that plugs into where the component cable plugs into normally. Optical cable plugs into that.

That cable/box also has rca outs.

So in otherwords I can use HDMI and Optical Audio out without doing any hackjob wiring or breaking plugs to fit etc on the Elite boxes?

Sounds about right, I just got myself an elite a week or so ago, and today gonna set it up with the HDMI cable, and in the box you get a thingo that plugs into the the where you would normally plug the component cable (sorry names are are a mental blank for me right now), but next to no fiddling around.

I use the HDMI on my pro console, but I assumed that you had to use the component attached in order in to access the optical plug that is attached to the XBOX component cable adaptor? (does that make any sense..)

So is there a way to use HDMI and optical at the same time..? I haven't found a way to get both going at the same time so I just use the HDMI for both video and audio.

So you can plug both in and just use the optical part of the component cable? or wont they both fit.

Is it HDMI or Component / Optical only? (meaning one or the other is what I meant)

Confusing I know or at least I am with this setup, I did see an article about breaking that component box apart to make it easier to fit both side by side but thought that was just for the older Pro boxes not the Elites.

Well either way, was thinking of getting an elite, though i read they arent prone to red rings, but then again i read they are so.. I'd have hoped they'd be better built since they're the newer builds.

Not sure I want to fork out $500 for a new unit if its going to do the same as my 2-3 year old unit I have now.

Yes - but my attachment looks different from that one. I bought my xbox in Feb '08 so that may explain the difference?

On my console, you can only have HDMI or the cable from your photo, Necris. And they both go into the same area on the back of the console, thus rendering it impossible to use both the HDMI and optical at the same time. I can't believe it but I can't see any way of using both.

Maybe the newer elites got rid of this problem?

Sweet so you can use both HDMI and the Optical, the guy at the store said you couldnt cos the HDMI controls the audio, I'd have thought you could shut one down over the other at least since not everyone has HDMI surround sound yet.

Ill find out anyway, I just bought the Elite...

just cause you can plug them both in, doesn't mean the 360 will let you output video through one and sound through the other.

Someone post once they've tested that definitively please........

Well, you can't output video through that breakout box/cable thing... It has 3 outputs.. 1x optical out (audio), 2x RCA audio outs.

It can't output video.

It is meant to be used with the HDMI cable.

It is for anyone that has a TV that doesn't support audio through HDMI, or for those that just want to output via digital or RCA to an external amp/speaker system while using the HDMI cable.

If you couldn't use the HDMI cable to output video while having this plugged in

then your xbox wouldn't be outputting any video whatsoever.

Yeah they both work.

You use the HDMI cable for video and the cable that Wil posted at the same time.

Audio still comes out the TV though since its pumping via HDMI and the audio goes out the RC / Optical on the other connector for surround sound.

The new HDD that came with the XBOX I just bought today is fucked so I gotta take the lot back to replace :banghead: Im having one unlucky streak at the moment.
