As mentioned I want to know which way people stand / lay their X360

I used to Stand mine vertically rather than lay it down like a DVD/VCR player how do others do it, since people have said standing is bad for air/cooling.

Feel free to comment if you have heard a preferred method for cooling reasons, aesthetic reasons or perhaps it gives some form of sexual relief if its standing upright, i dunno whatever haha.

Thanks.

i lay mine down so it fits into the entertainment unit. i have the intercooler on the back, so i am not concerned about RROD (although it is noisy.... but when do you ever have the TV quieter than the 360?).

i dont like the look of it being vertically anyways

i would think its better for the discs to lay the machine down?

Not sure to be honest which method is best for the discs
The guy at the shop said those intercoolers arent that great, supposedly they can do more damage than good, but like anything its his opinion.

Though I was thinking of getting one anyway.

But having said that, the discs work either ways, the tray has those clips to manage using it vertically so the discs dont fall out.

I may use my new XB horizontally and see how that plays out, it usually sits on my subwoofer, dont think it can sit horizontally on it though.

I have mine horizontal.

xbox on subwoofer = bad idea.

That shaking will kill the HD eventually, and loosen anything that can be loosened.

i have mine laying down so it fits in my entertainment unit as well, and some of those things are quite correct about those coolers, had a mate waaaaaay back melt the rear end of their xbox with one, don't ask me how though......

i remember when the ps2 came out and everyone was all 'ooh it stands up vertically' - and everyone did it vertically until they realised that when they knocked the ps2 accidently (it eventually happens), the spinning disc inside would get those big dirty circular scratches on them, and the same thing seems to happen with the 360.

i heard it was a conspiracy to get people to have to replace their discs more often. who knows...

laying +1

I lay it down as I had a copy of Test Drive scratched to hell by standing it up......

lay down.

Discs spinning along the same axis as gravity just seems to be a recipe for disaster.

Having said that though, I used to stand my PS2 up - mainly cause you could, and you could spin the logo so it still looked right which was cool - and never had a problem.

360 drives seem a lot more temperamental though. Of course, with NXE, you can just rip the game to hardrive - which rocks, btw - and then the issue is a little moot.

But then, lay flat, there's at least a slim chance the solder will reset in place when it melts. Another reason not to stand the box on end....
yo listen up here's a story
about a little guy that lives in a blue world
and all day and all night and everything he sees

and a blue corvette

cos he ain't got nobody to listen to

I have mine standing up............. :ermm: ............ITS COOLER DAMN IT!!!!! :argh:

:P

I dunno, ive just always had mine standing up, because its the only way to fit it along side the TV, because i didn't like having it in the confined spaces of the entertainment unit.

The Good: - Its in the open now so plenty of cooling.
- It matches my Console Entertainment Unit i made specifically to accomidate the 360 vertically
The Bad: - Its prone to falling with the Play and Charge Kit plugged in with Mad jack russels running around (Yes it has happened at the old house but nothing happened to it)

Hmm, I cant sit it on anything else my unit isnt big enough to sit anything more on (plasma takes the whole unit) the woofer is on the carpet, though it doesnt vibrate and boom heavily anyway.

Still good point though.

On a side note my new Elite I bought the HDD was borked.. the damn thing wouldnt update to NXE and then the HDD disappeared from the memory tab.

Gotta take it back now tomorrow 1 day after buying it.

Laying down because if i stand it up it (as Ghost Recon found out) scratches disks

When I first got my consoles I had them both standing up but they seem to run a bit better laying down.

Mine is laying flat on top of the entertainment unit. I have never put it vertically 'cause I am scared I'll knock it.

Still unsure whether to get an intercooler...there's so many conflicting opinions on it. But heading into summer it's on the radar.

I don't see any advantage in standing it up unless you're short on space.

Yeah Im going to start laying it down seems a better way for the reasons people mentioned for the disc scratching possibility and just better air flow.

Noticed the bottom (part you stand upright on) does have vents in it so it may be better for airflow rather than the heat rising up to the HDD area it can dissipate out the sides and top when laying down.

I might invest in a couple of intercoolers for the new xbox and old one when it returns from repair.

Are there different types - and which do people recommend?

The airflow changes appropriately when you switch it around. There shouldn't be a difference in cooling either way. The problem is all the heat is/was being generated generally in the one spot anyway, which didn't go down too well with poor quality solder joints and boards.

I won't be giving any recommendations for the Intercooler. More trouble than help in my book.
