On Facebook, Xbox LIVE’s Major Nelson changed his status to “Halo 3 Recon is no more…” Curious (and a little confused), I followed the link he posted to accompany it which led to his very brief new blog post. Looks like it is no more -– because it’s now Halo 3: ODST.

According to Bungie’s post announcing the new name, the “…new title is a more straightforward account of the experience that awaits and the role you will assume as you explore the streets of New Mombasa. But don’t worry, you can still has Recon. (the armor that is, it’s still tied to the Vidmaster achievements and will be accessible via the final retail release next Fall).”

The acronym ODST stands for “Orbital Drop Shock Trooper,” which is a special forces branch of the UNSC military called into action for highly specialized, small scale operations. (You can find our own definitions for ODST here.) ODST units are deployed in portions of the Halo 2 and 3 campaigns, and have apparently also been featured in the Halo novels. I’m not sure how effective they are given I can’t remember them at all, but I suppose for a special forces branch, being completely unremembered may actually mean they’re damn good. The Michael Jordans of specialized small scale warfare, if you will.

Even if the ODST is an awesome, fadeaway shooting, tongue wagging group of elite soldiers, I’m not sure why Bungie went and changed the name. Halo 3: Recon was easy to remember; Halo 3: ODST may be more accurate in terms of the game, but it’s something only hardcore Halo fans are going to get. Then again, it does rhyme…

Over the next few days, Bungie and Microsoft will be hard at work replacing all instances of Halo 3: Recon with Halo 3: ODST on their websites, on Xbox LIVE Marketplace, and in the announcement trailer. So try to forget about its former name, because soon the only places it will exist are in the post announcing it’s no longer the name, on Wikipedia, and in past stories people are too lazy to change.

Halo sucks anyway.
Maybe Halo Wars can lift it up.

But as far as my opinion Halo is just for fanboys of the series, I played the first one and the 3rd and felt it just lacked any real 'sucking in' to the game depth and story etc.

Plus any game where they have to make a level that goes into the belly of a beast (e.g alien mother, inside a slime womb etc) cant think of a decent idea for a story/level.

It happens in all games these days (other than GOW2 which was interesting to cut the heart from the worm) but notice Halo3 did it, GOW2 did it, Force Unleashed did it, i know theres others.

It annoys me.

What were we talking about again? oh thats right halo.. meh sucks.
