Does anyone play the pen and paper D&D here?

I feel like an incomplete nerd because I've never given it a crack. I think I might have some talent in rolling dice and making a whole heaps of shit up, so I've been doing some reading, and dare I say it, it's starting to sound very interesting.

Seriously? I always equate it with the highest level of nerd-dom. Which is weird, because I know nothing about it but have obviously been brainwashed by something on the subject. (Nightmare on Elm Street 3???)

I think you should try it, but you start organising meetings around it, I will no longer find you attractive :P

it has been a long time since i played it.

I think it has gone down the path of warhammer, with little models and fancy boards, could be wrong though.

Meetings? I was thinking more like nerd gatherings where everyone has to dress up! You'll need to sew me a mad wizards cloak or something.

I've met people here at IBM that do, they're in their late 30's now.

It's weird...I watched them once. Found it comical, and onpar with LARPing.

My recent interest was inspired by Penny Arcade. Gabe had a go at his first game as DM. Here's a photo he took-

Notice his dedication to supplying a dragon tablecloth, candles, incense, popcorn and chocolate milk. That's somewhere I can hang!

Also, to accompany such an event, they had a 4 part comic telling the story of how it began. Here is the last comic showing the great moment where the game finally began and Gabe makes his first play as DM-

That is INSPIRING!!!!

they didn't have any shit like that... just a single beat up book, and one guy that was "guiding" what was happening...

You know how there are some things that you see and you just have to say, "That's cool!"... well, seeing the D&D in real life had the opposite effect.

lol

No, that' doesn't sound cool... :wtf2:

I'm guessing from what I've read that it's up to the Dungeon Master to set the mood and atmosphere. I would say a good story telling ability would be needed for it to reach any level of awesomness. Perhaps not to the level of the Warhammer guys at the Games Workshop in Parramatta though. I don't think they realise that the walls are so thin that the rest of us nerds in the Phantom Zone next door can hear them and we are laughing rather heavily to ourselves.

Anyone seen the gag video the guys that made Summoner on the PS2 made? It had the characters from the game playing D&D and it was friggen hilarious.

The new D&D Handbooks were up for download on the place I get my comics from. Might get them and have a read. First rule is to obviously ban badgers from the game...

I was thinking of Retarded Animal Babies, but can't even link to that episode from work. I was more thinking of "You face a dragon made entirely of boobs!"

I could use my instruments to add cool SFX!!!

You know all those RPG's you play Poison? This is where they came from. The Dungeon Master designs or follows a pre-made story, and the players roll dice to move around the fictional world and fight in dungeons against beasties. You have different character classes with different levels for health and dexterity and all the usual stuff, and you roll the big arse dice to do battles and calculate who wins. All the stuff the computer now does behind the scenes.

I know that is where RPGs came from :P

So then if you can just play video games why would you do the whole pen and paper thing? It could be interesting for a nerd like me I guess. I want to play those card games I can't remember what they are called.

I guess it's just the idea of hanging out with a bunch of friends and playing them, as well as designing original ones, that sounds a bit different to sitting in front of a screen on your own.

I have to admit, I have a small collection of Yi-Gi-Oh video games. Like Pokemon, the fluff around the game is pure rubbish, but the game itself is rather cool. If you get the ones that are the pure card games, they're really good.

I was a bit like that with them too, but the moment anyone actually sees you playing it you constantly get ridiculed and called a fan boy just because it has Yi-Gi-Oh in the name.
DISCLAIMER:Don't like what i say? Suck it up Princess
