Does anyone know another language? I'm thinking of learning Japanese while I'm bored at work all day. Recommend sites/podcasts/etc if anyone knows of any. Japanese would be cool to learn so that I can play Japanese games and watch anime.

I've been wanting to learn Japanese for YEARS, but like most things have never gotten round to it. I have found I have picked up phrases and stuff from watching anime, but don't understand well enough to watch without subs.

People with English as a native language say that Japanese is the hardest for us to learn, and the only way to get fluent is to live there. That's a bit off putting.

I have wanted to learn for years too but don't do anything about it so I have decided now is the time to start! Since I am bored at work all the time I may as well use my time productively while I am working.

Is it really the hardest? That is one of the few countries I want to go visit but I doubt we would move there anytime soon :( I will learn slowly!

I used to know plenty of german, as my Grandparents came to aus from there, but having lived in aus my entire life it just gradually whittled away to naught

my mother is sth african, so i grew up listening to Afrikaans cos it was spoken in the home. I just picked it up from there. My grandma is a French and German teacher, so it drilled into me. Didn't have alot of choice i'm afraid. Hopefully it will come in use one day. I've travelled in Germany and I did find it alot easier to get around and deal with people.

i have books/cd's to learn German & Japanese, but havent had been able to commit time to get into them.

it may sound silly, but once youve got a basic grasp of the language read children's books.

try not to be as impatient as me when doing so too - unfortunately our minds have been fucked over by the backwards grammar of English, which makes it harder for us to learn new languages.

EDIT: Look for a foreign language bookstore for cd's & books. There is a really good one in Melbourne if you are local.

Actually there is a Japanese bookstore near Pitt St Mall so I could go there since it is only 10 mins away. I like some Japanese music too so I will start listening to it all the time!

I can only swear in various languages. That seems to be the first thing you pick up.

My sister in law is Chilean so she speaks spanish, so my brother has learned important phrases like how to call her a little pig (chanchita!!) :awesome:

He also learned how to say a few other things (which are pretty gross), and used to yell them randomly when he worked at Game. Occasionally he would offend someone who spoke spanish :D

i took japanese through high school, and have also done a community college type course on it.

you guys wanting guides - find pimsleurs guide to japanese, generally 'freely' available on the net (if not, I may still have it on my PC somewhere).

used that to brush up on it before going to Japan for a trip year before last. Helped un-rust alot of it in my head. Spoke Japanese (really badly) to a few people, and other than them giggling at some stuff i said, I think I managed to get the point across ok.

the biggest thing is the speed they speak at, makes it really hard to follow. asking them to slow down is fine though, as a people they love to bend over backwards.

I wouldnt want to ever attempt speaking say french to a frenchman and ask them to slow down. sacre bleu!
