PS3 HDD Upgrade and Linux Install

So far, hit a snag already as it seems the rules have changed with the recent firmware upgrade.

The physical hard drive install is as easy as they say. Supposedly, once the drive is in you just boot it up and it goes straight to the formatting process. Not so anymore. You need a copy of the latest firmware on a USB drive plugged into your PS3. 143Mb download for that one. Thanks for the heads up on that one NOBODY!!! :fist:

Clearly didn't do my research enough as I was pissed to discover that you can only assign a paltry 10Gb to the Linux partition. What a load of crap! That guarantees that you won't be doing anything spectacular with it!

Relatively straight forward to get the install going, but it's taking a hell of a long time. Will let it run on it's own and hit the sack. It's very slowly installing all the software.

So far, can't see this being an absolute stunner of a system, but if I can get my Linux version of Alpha Centauri running on it, then that's a win in my books at least.

I started taking pics but just really couldn't be bothered after a very short while. A million other sites have done the pics already, and it's pretty uneventful at the start. I'll try getting screen grabs once it's actually installed.

Back to it.

All installed and running now. Seems to do the basics at a pretty reasonable speed. The image is a bit flickery though, so I couldn't even get a good quality pic if I tried. It's currently running a whole ton of updates. Will be a while, and then it's on to the tweaking.

I had a run of screw ups trying to get the resolution right with the ps3videomode util. Turns out the flickering is because it deems 1080i to be better than 720p by default, and naturally the high resolution fine lines don't mix well with shitty interlacing.

Drove me a little nuts so I decided to restore the PS3 itself back to original state while I watched The Blob on Sci-Fi. All good an happy apart from some tweaking of video settings and then it was back to Ubuntu.

WRONG!

Corrupted root partition... No luck recovering so far, so I'mm gonna play some games before I reinstall the damn thing all over again. It shits me, but I like it. Does that make sense?

Well, if I get it all running smoothly and there's a valid reason for others to give it a try at this point, I'll put together a detailed FAQ for everyone to follow. So far, I've found that every set of instructions I've come across is missing particular facts. I'll document it in step by step actions with every tweak under the sun that I can find.

I'm trying to run Linux on the PS3. Besides the fact I typically install it on everything possible anyway, I'm hoping to get a few good emulators going on it and possibly run Alpha Centauri on the plasma.

well, i'm interested - icecream or no icecream.

basically, branden, you can install linux on ps3 and then use it to run any linux software. Imagine being able to install windows on your 360 then run any windows apps on it.

At least, i think that analogy is correct.

Anyhoo, you can then run any linux compatible emulators on your ps3; to br honest, i'm not all that familiar with the linux emulation scene...but let's say there's a SNES emulator - you could use that to play any snes roms on your ps3.

which is why it's cool :)
yo listen up here's a story
about a little guy that lives in a blue world
and all day and all night and everything he sees
is just blue like him inside and outside
blue his house with a blue little window
and a blue corvette
and everything is blue for him and hisself
and everybody around
cos he ain't got nobody to listen to

i'm blue da ba dee da ba die...

YAY! Blue gets it!

Had to reformat and start again. Because of the way the PS3 allocates the petition, it thought one didn't exist, Linux thought it did, end of the day, had to wipe it.

I want that on my PS3 for the emulator but don't want to risk breaking it. Maybe I should buy another PS3.

You can't break it. Not even possible.

I have it all running now. PS3 itself is back in order and Ubuntu is running. I can't get it to run in anything other than 1080i though. Time to start tweaking it.

It might not even be worth your hassle yet. Can't say it runs spectacularly at the moment. I'm hoping I can tweak it down a fair bit, but it seems a bit more like a novelty right now.
