I had this cool idea to post a "how's everyone going with..." thread for a game that was the flavour of the day a while back, probably an RPG cause they tend to take a while to playthrough.

Oh wait, what's that? ... Really... sorry, hang on guys, just got to check something.

OH DAMN, seems someone beat me to it.

Anyhoo,

Dragon's Age. That's a good game that people seemed to be into for a bit. How's everyone going.

I'm still playing with my first "toon" as the kids say, a human scout. Coming close to the end though, I think, probably a couple of major plot missions to go so I'm going to be sidequesting for a while.

Still haven't jiggied with either of the lovely lasses, I've decided to try to seduce the ex-nun (after hoping to bed Morrigan, cause she was all nowty and high maintenance, before realising I was just role playing my real life relationships) but still haven't cracked it.

And I hate revenants...

Also, Sten sucks, and Shale is like a cheat code that I can't stop using.

I hate to think how many hours I've sunk into this, and I'm still all set for a second play through - probably as a mage.

I got about 60 odd hours into my first char where i relised I made a MAJOR fuckup early on, and had to restart. Forgot to recruit the ex-nun, and figures after that all i ran into was locked chests, which royally dfucked me over sincew im a mage. So had to restart from scratch, must say though that im enjoying it much more since i basically can respec my mage and unlock all my chests.

though decided to give it a rest for a while since ive done ALL of the missions im working on now (currently lost in my own mind within the fade at the mages tower) and it bores the hell out of me, cant loot, steal money, NOTHING. and that piece takes a good couple hours minimum, will go back to it later, when its not fresh in my mind.
DISCLAIMER:Don't like what i say? Suck it up Princess

So much better on PC this game, I got the Xpacks for it and played one of them, I've just got the urn of ashes was the last thing I did, amongst all teh side quests.

I dont have Shale in my group of people, think hes the only one I dont have, I never use Sten cos hes annoying, mainly stick with Wynn, Morrigan, Lianna and myself a rogue duelist, can pretty much power through anything.

My stock party is me (also a rogue duelist), Wynn (for heals), Lianna (for ranged DPS) and Shale/Mickey(my dog)/Alastair for tanking. This way I can either hang back and range, or get behind whatever mob we're targetting for backstab/critical.

I'd use Shale all the time except it feels like cheating.

I made the mistake of sticking Morrigan on "auto-level up" early on, so she has a bunch of crap spells.

Where do you get Shale from? I havent come across him yet.

I have the same setup, cept I use Alistair or Morrigan mainly, dpending on where im going if I need a tank. But I specced Wynn quite good with custom scripts / tactics so she can easily keep the entire group up in massive battles without the need for a tank.

Most of the time though the AI goes for you rather than the others. Spose thats cos I have no tank but even when I did use one he seemed to not hold agro very well or since im the player the AI goes for me, I noticed when switching to play other players like Lianna the AI just zergs you or whichever class your playing.

Is Shale good? I didn't use ihim once because I assumed that he would be average as a DLC character. I finished the game once and absolutely loved it while I was playing it but can't seem to get back into it. While I was playing it I couldn't wait for the second playthrough but once I started again couldn't get into it.

Played the game as a Rogue which helped a lot and started again as a Dwarf Warrior which is probably why I don't like it. The dwarves really annoy me because they are so ugly. I will definitely play this game again but probably not anytime soon.

Love Bioware though and can't wait for ME2 :)

Shale is only available from the DLC, can't recall what it's called - stone warrior or some crap.

It sort of sucks, cause he quite clearly was a main character that they farmed off to DLC. He talks back to NPC's during cut scenes and has some of the best lines in the game, he is very sarcastic and reminds me of Mort from Planescape:torment. Of course, it's good if you have him, cause he isn't just tacked on....

He's easily the best tank. Big constitution, big strength, his "weapons" do various elemental damage (and armour is also element based, so you can stick him on frost offence/fire defence against drakes and dragons and mop up) - basically think of "the Hulk" - actually, I think that's who he's based off, or the stone dude from Fab Four. Also, one of his modes (for occasions where you don't need a tank) boosts the ranged damage of nearby allies.

He's awfully unbalanced, which is why they probably moved him to DLC... but heaps of fun to have in your party as he criticises you every time you refuse to squish someone's head and pisses me off a lot less than emo Alaistair and doesn't fall down as much as Sten.

Also, the quest to get him is pretty cool, and has one of the best puzzles in the game so far. I think the problem is that with Shale in my party, I don't want to use any other tanks, he's just to much fun.

He's easily worth the money of the DLC, although I got him for free essentially (I got the special edition through steam, yonks ago when it was on special, so it cost me about 60 bucks...)

On a side note, I pashed Leliana this afternoon. I'm quite disturbed that I'm actually finding myself strangely attracted to her (IRL)... I think it's the accent.

Next stop - Orzammar. I hate dwarfs, shifty little beardy-weardys that they are. Plus, I've got Sten in my party cause we're looking for his sword, the pussy. Wish me luck...

(oh, BTW - Poison, how long did it take you? Did you do all the side quests? If you're playing again, stick Shale in your party)

Yeah, that is a bit broken. Maybe it goes for you cause you give off "leader aura" although I've been in a few battles where it seems to go for whoever I'm controlling, which is also supported by the fact that the tactics includes friendlies targetting the "player controlled" character.

However... it's (somewhat) easily worked around.

Use items or skills on you main char that decrease aggro, and ensure your tank uses threaten and taunt.

I'm dreading my next run through, which I've decided will be a blood mage warrior.... until I get the warrior spec, I'm screwed.

I see where Shale is I never went there on my rounds while questing etc.

I just finished the game, I quite enjoyed the game entirely, the choices and stories along the way, its one of those games where the ending captures you in and you dont want it to end, I wanted it to continue on...

I'll replay the game with a new character to do something different story wise etc and see the varying endings.

I did make my character fall in love with lelianna and have some fun times in the tent, which was fun, tried with Morrigan but shes a stone-cold bitch, hard to get anything with her though I read it is possible as it is with the other characters, cept the dog and Sten I think.

I quite like the Mage class, so my second play through I'll do that I think (first one was a Rogue/Duelist), its fun doing ranged spells though when I used Morrigan a few times and found the death cloud spell and flame/blizzard AOE spells were great for wiping out mass groupings of armies.

Such a shame this game didnt have co-op.

But I have to say this is one of the better if not best RPG games I've played in such a long time, Bioware did a good job, I know I played the StarWars KOTOR years back (I think Bioware did those too) and I never liked it, though I like Star Wars its a bit over the top and got tedious.

Theres another XPack/DLC if you want to call it for this coming out this month I read on the Bioware website hopefully it continues the story after, the current DLC's you can play after finishing the game but its set before the final storyline quest so its probably better doing them before finishing the main story.

rogue. :)

If you don't choose rogue, make sure you max out the lockpick skill on one of your rogue party members asap.

I'm still playing my first play through on PC. From what I've read, the normal difficulty on PC is set way higher than on 360, which would explain why I'm still struggling through. I'm getting a bit bored with all the fighting though now, so am tempted to drop the difficulty to Low/easy

Magic dealer is good, you can clear house easy, you pickup a rogue class party member shortly into the start anyway which they have higher lockpick than your start rogue does.

I started with Rogue then switched.

I think that one of the joys with this game is you can start with any character and do ok. The main thing would be turning off auto-levelup and choosing the skills for the NPC's based on what you need.

Make sure tanks have threaten and other skills that increase aggro, mages need a healing skill and ranged fighters need - well- ranged skills.

have a clear vision of what role each NPC will play and tailor the game to suit.

I still think rogue is the best starting character, of course Jamsin will disagree just to be different. You can spec a rogue to be a combined melee/ranged character which fits best with your NPC's.

I ensure that my party has a ranged specialist, support char and a tank. My rogue can then play melee/ranged to suit dependant on the circumstances

I wasnt disagreeing I started with a rogue and finished the game with a rogue but half way through found I preferred the mage you can rip apart enemies from afar with the blizzard and the fire tornado like spell.

I just found Rogue boring after a while run up to the enemies (stealth was shit cos your NPC's wouldnt follow when an enemy was in range) so you'd either a) go it alone for a short while getting creamed after breaking stealth or b) always being the focus of attacks in melee combat while tryig to get backstabs in for more damage.

Jams, I was just fuckin with you. I love you really :)

You need to set your party to "hold" when you go stealth. I've cleared a few areas of high level items without needing to fight that way. Also, once you get far away enough from the enemies, you lose the 'attack' status. I've skilled my stealth up so I can clear chests and attack without breaking stealth.

As for being the focus of attacks - that's why you need to make sure your tank has agro increasing skills. I usually run with my rogue, a tank, second rogue on ranged and a healer (wynn). I either use my rogue for ranged, or backstabbing.

Another tip - obvious as it may be - ensure your whole party is focusing on a single enemy; if you leave it up to the AI for targetting everyone will be targeting someone different. This is actually a tip i learned playing Sins of a Solar Empire.......

Perhaps you can only do that on PC though?

Yeh....let me know how you focus everyones attack on a sole enemy on the xbox....other than manually scanning through each character and appointing a target (Which they probably ignore once you leave their command)

Dunno, on PC you just click the 'select all' button, or use Shift-left-click to choose a couple of characters.
