Sony Computer Entertainment America LLC. (SCEA) announced today plans to release LittleBigPlanet 2, the sequel to the award-winning, multi-million unit selling hit LittleBigPlanet, exclusively for the PlayStation 3 (PS3) system. Developed by Media Molecule, LittleBigPlanet 2 will provide fans a new means to PLAY, CREATE, and SHARE, including a revamped graphics engine supplying stunning visuals, a fresh storyline, added accessories and equipment for Sackboy, and revolutionary gameplay mechanics providing players a level of control and customization that has never been seen before.

"Since LittleBigPlanet launched, our online community has created an amazing selection of levels with the tools available," said Scott A. Steinberg, vice president, product marketing, SCEA. "With LittleBigPlanet 2, users will now have a new, evolved Create mode with the ability to make actual games, not just levels, providing an endless gaming adventure for fans, as well as an entertainment experience that can be enjoyed by the entire family."

Utilizing an updated graphics engine and state-of-the-art visual technologies, LittleBigPlanet 2 will showcase Sackboy better than ever. Along his adventure, the stitched together icon will have access to new equipment to aid him on his journey, including a grappling hook, power gloves, a magic bag, and more, all anchored by a fresh storyline to PLAY that is set in an artistically modernized new world. Players will also have the opportunity to add customizable Sackbots (robot Sackboys) to their creations. These interactive, programmable characters bring the game to life and allow users to record animations and voice-overs with them, as well as customize sizing and clothing for each individual or group of Sackbots.

LittleBigPlanet has always empowered players to CREATE their own levels by utilizing the same tool set used by the development team. In LittleBigPlanet 2, the tools have evolved to allow users to not only make better levels, but completely new games. With the implementation of a new CREATE mode, players will have the ability to broaden their developer horizons across multiple genres. Now allowing for a higher level of gameplay control, players can reset the control buttons for any object and change the rules to any level—imagine racing games, flying games, and shooters–you can now take control of anything! Also included are new multiplayer abilities so games can have life meters, scoring, and other elements to advance the types of games available for a social/competitive multiplayer experience, including puzzle games, sports, action/adventure, and more. Added to these fundamentals are a movie-like cut-scene maker to improve the storyline components of each creation and a newly enhanced SHARE component making it easier to search for, play through, and showcase the millions of levels around the world.

LittleBigPlanet 2 will be backwards compatible with LittleBigPlanet allowing players to access all online levels created with the original game. It will also include bonus levels that will support the PlayStation Move navigation controller.

It looks like LittleBigPlanet 2 isn't anything like the original we played on the Sony console last year. The developers have taken it more seriously and have provided a robust platform that will let you "clone" just about any kind of game and environment.

LittleBigPlanet 2 does Mario dynamics in hours

For starters, you can now mimic just about any move your mind can envision. Take for example the side-platformer Marios Bros. You are able to clone the behavior of the sack jumpers from the game. Thinks includes the ability to replicate the physics easily with all the tons of gadgets thrown in and totally knockoff Super Mario Bros dynamics within hours. Furthermore it allows for integration with Playstation Move and Eye, making it the most robust level editor to date.

The AI editor isn't as troublesome to setup and the sound creator comes in handy especially when developing cut scenes. Did we forget to mention you could make cut scenes now?

There have also been reports that LittleBigPlanet 2 is the way to go when developing first-person shooters and even racing games.

mixed feelings here, tbh. Version 2 of "creators" have the potential for huge amounts of suck. But I can see it sucking up huge amounts of time if I get it and it's sufficiently different from the original... OSG adventures 2, here I come.

yo listen up here's a story
about a little guy that lives in a blue world
and all day and all night and everything he sees
is just blue like him inside and outside
blue his house with a blue little window
and a blue corvette
and everything is blue for him and hisself
and everybody around
cos he ain't got nobody to listen to

i'm blue da ba dee da ba die...

the sequel to OSG adventure would be, as with all the best sequels, a third person action game with driving bits and an onrails tank/minigun section. Oh, and QTE's, lots of em. Right after a really long cutscene, and with no warning and instant death.

Just warning you.

Actually got around to watching the trailer. It looks like a lot of what they're doing is just incorporating by default a lot of the stuff that was done in LBP but needed tricky logic gates and construction. I would love you to see some of the logic gates used in the OSG level!!

However, for me this will take some of the fun away, a lot of the thrill was figuring out how to do something using just the simple tools. Case in point, the teleporter in my level, or the triggering logic that only opened the gate after you collected everything (and also triggered the lights on the board to say what you had left to collect).

Oh, and the top down racer - could probably be done in LBP. They're actually rockets, flying on the two-d plan with a background behind them from the looks of it.
