Do you own an Xbox 360? If so then there's a pretty good chance that your Xbox 360 has failed once, contributing to the absurdly high Xbox 360 failure rate which was announced in late April by NoFussReviews.com.

The console failure rate survey found out what anyone who has a few friends with an Xbox 360 can tell you: the consoles die. In the survey of 500,000 individuals NoFussReviews found that 42% of Xbox 360 owners have had their game console repaired or replaced and of those individuals 55% have had to have their console replaced more than once.

Specifically the Xbox 360 failure rate is so bad that 12% of respondents have had to have their 360 fixed three times, 6% have had to have theirs fixed five times and 3% have had their Xbox 360 repaired or replaced more than five times. These Xbox 360 failures include the Red Ring of Death or RROD error, the E74 error and any other general console failure.
When compared the PS3 failure rate of 8% and the Nintendo Wii failure rate of less than 1% it is quickly apparent that the Xbox 360 has had some major issues. This survey isn't the first to highlight a high Xbox 360 failure rate. Game Informer found that its print subscribers reported a 54.2% Xbox 360 failure rate in late 2009 and a survey by SquareTrade which found the failure rate to be 23.7%.

"Nearly three years ago, Microsoft acknowledged an unacceptable number of console repairs and took the unprecedented step of offering a three year warranty for certain errors. We continually work to improve the quality of our products and customer satisfaction with the Xbox 360 is outstanding." said an anonymous Microsoft spokesman, who isn't authorized by the company to speak for attribution, in an e-mail to WalletPop.

"The reported failure rates from an online survey at a gaming blog are statistically irrelevant, and do not warrant further comment," the spokesman wrote.

When it comes to statistical relevance, the survey by NoFussReviews, which surveyed 500,000 individuals, including more than 150,000 Xbox 360 owners, has many more data points than recent surveys from J.D. Powers, Apartments.com and Fannie Mae, which are used to gain insight on the behaviors of all Americans.

Statistical preferences aside, Microsoft was referencing the Xbox 360 warranty extension that occurred in 2007, when the reported Xbox 360 failure rates were around 33%, at a cost of more than $1 billion. Since then the warranty extension was expanded to include consoles that failed due to an E74 error.

With high reported Xbox 360 failure rates being reported it begs the question, "Is the Xbox 360 a good buy?" As a gamer who is on his third or fourth console, the thought had crossed my mind last year when I sent my Xbox 360 back to Microsoft for repairs and the minds of many others who have experienced an Xbox 360 failure.

Before making a snap decision we took into consideration that the SquareTrade survey from late 2009 showed a drastic decline in the number of Xbox 360 failures since Microsoft introduced a smaller, cooler CPU/GPU in late 2008. Also of interest, only 3.8% of respondents to the IGN poll said they would never by an Xbox 360 again.

Even with the high Xbox 360 failure rates it is hard to call the Xbox 360 a bad buy. I still personally recommend the system to friends and family on a regular basis, with the warning to buy a new model with more reliable hardware and a three-year warranty. Ultimately it is up to you, but I wouldn't let the a high Xbox 360 failure rate, which includes consoles Microsoft acknowledged to have a higher than acceptable rate of failure, dissuade you from a purchase today.

We've all complained as some point about our 360's breaking, but this article puts it into an interesting perspective.

Do you consider it a bad buy? If someone asks you what console to buy, do you still have no problem recommending the 360 as being worthy of their cash?

I can't. I'm well and truly burnt. I know the new ones are more reliable, but why should I have to buy yet another one in the first place? I feel resentment for them thieving my money for a shit product. They have not done enough for me to make up for my trouble and costs. That may be a personal perspective, but from a technical point of view, I can also no longer judge what the life expectancy of the new consoles will be. The originals lasted a good while before they started dying. Who says it's not the same again? MS is not a hardware company.

Also, the PS3 is offering up alot more value for the price in comparison. Not alot of people have Blu Ray yet. It's such an easy entry to both worlds. From a simple buyers perspective, it would seem like a simple choice to a general consumer.

So no, I can't call it a good buy anymore. I will have to buy one again purely for all the money I've invested in games, but that is my only reason for forking out yet again.

Ive had 3 consoles and never had a real problem with any of them. My first one got the RROD from a power surge and I rang up Microsoft, sent it away and had it back within a week. I sold my 2nd one because I upgraded to an elite.

So I really havent had the problems that a lot of others have.

My 360 hasn't RROD yet but Wils did when he had only had it for about a year. I rarely play 360 anymore since most of the good exclusives are on PS3 and I would definitely recommend the PS3 over 360 to anyone asking.

I'm not planning on buying the next gen MS console at launch simply because of the 360s failure rate.

Clearly the failure rate of the xbox means absolutely nothing.. something this big, happening for this long....

Will i buy another MS console? Of course i will provided it still has the popular games. I'm not loyal to Sony or MS..

I have a shed load more games on my 360 than my ps3, when a mulit platform game comes out I tend to get it on the 360? Why? Buggered if I know.

I don’t recommend the 360 to friends anymore and if mine broke for a third time I would probably get a new one because I have to much invested in it.

Will I get the next gen MS console on launch? Fuck no!

if you want to play great games, yes its a good buy, 360 might have a bad failure rate, but overall, the gaming experience is way better.

I think it's a bad buy. After spending $500 of your hard earned you shouldn't have to "worry" about something suddenly not turning on.

My first 360 actually started to red ring by the third day of ownership, and it was one of the first Falcon's. I should've taken it back right then and there, but it magically started working again. Only every other day would it red ring. I didn't want to be without a console at the time, seeing as we were all heavily into RB6v2 and Forza 2, so I just persevered. After less than a year it red ringed and never came back.

My warranty replacement console has red ringed once since I got it. But has been relatively fine.

At the moment my 360 is a Forza 3 and Trials HD machine only. If it wasn't for Forza 3 and all the games we have, I would consider getting rid of it.

For the money, I believe the PS3 is the better console. It just does more, and does the things that are the same better. For example, bluray...it's one of the only bluray players that was available quite some time ago that is now 3D ready thanks to an update from Sony. Also, it's a better media extender than the 360 IMO, and with PlayTV it just does everything you could want it to in a home theater setup.

I don't regret buying the 360 back when I did - but now if I had to choose between one it would be the PS3. That's why the Ps3 came to Sydney - I couldn't trust that the 360 would survive the trip, survive being over here, or survive the trip back; also, I get to have a bluray player with me.

The difference between games on 360 and Ps3 is mostly minimal now, with few exceptions. Some games are starting to 'look' better on Ps3, even. Then you have things like the replay function in JC2.

I'd be hard pressed to recommend getting a 360 to someone now, unless they specifically wanted to play a 360 exclusive.
yo listen up here's a story
about a little guy that lives in a blue world
and all day and all night and everything he sees
is just blue like him inside and outside
blue his house with a blue little window
and a blue corvette
and everything is blue for him and hisself
and everybody around
cos he ain't got nobody to listen to

i'm blue da ba dee da ba die...
