The first Bioshock was a well scripted title, all can agree to that. The second however, received many negative reactions from gamers who purchased the game, claiming it was not quite ‘Bioshock’.

And it couldn’t have been; there’s no easy way to make gamers feel the same way they felt about rapture in the first Bioshock, in fact it’s near impossible.

Cliff Bleszinski, Epic Games Design Director played the first and loved it, but the second, well let’s jsut say he had some issues with it.

In fact left up to Cliffy, he’d make Bioshock a “‘Shock’ franchise’”.

“I wanted to hate it,” he told OXM, “They were trying to make it so you were this halfway Big Daddy, the Alpha series.”

“BioShock was my game of the year;” he continued, “BioShock 2 wasn’t as good because you don’t get that first experience of Rapture, so by its nature it’s getting a tough time.

It was a very good follow-up but it lacked a little of that magic. But I still thoroughly enjoyed it and I beat it. I really enjoyed the father/daughter themes, and all the spoiler-ish bits at the end. I had weird parental pride coming out of me at the end.”

Cliffy didn’t stop there, according to him, Bioshock should be a “shock franchise”.

“But if I was working on that then I’d turn it into the ‘Shock’ franchise,”he said, “so it’s not just about BioShock; BioShock’s the splinter that’s at the bottom of the ocean.”

“EA owns the rights to System Shock but it’d be great to do another of those and set it in the jungle, where you go after a Colonel Kurtz-type guy. Or do a Soviet Shock where it’s a ’60s Eastern Bloc, Chernobyl-type place. Or do Arctic Shock – anything.

“But they’d always be about some person who had his idea of what a utopia would be, and everything from Ayn Rand to Stalin-esque police and stuff like that. Play with it and have the game design built around family elements – so you have one where they’re twins. You could have a ton of fun with it, but that’s not my call to make.”

It’s not your call, but maybe the guys are 2K are listening. And in all honesty I think you’re right Cliffy, I wouldn’t mind a Soviet Shock where it’s a ’60s Eastern Bloc, Chernobyl-type place at all.

I like this way of thinking! Rapture is a definitely a cool place to explore, but the mystery is lost by the time a sequel rolls around. A Chernobyl style setting would be both interesting and almost too easy, considering there already are some people going against advice and living in the radiation zones.
