Whichever God it is that you worship, you had better be thanking them right now for, University of Essex Doctor, Dominic Micklewright. Dr. Micklewright recently held research to compare the physical and psychological attributes of professional gamers to that of professional athletes and you’ll never guess what the research suggests. Okay, that was a go–amn lie. You will guess what the research suggests; you will guess exactly what the research suggests.

The cyber-sportsmen (they wear chaps, I imagine -Ed.) had mental sharpness and psychological traits comparable to ‘real’ athletes, and reacted to visual stimuli almost as fast as fighter jet pilots.

But their fitness levels were shockingly low and comparable to people either much younger or much older than their actual age.

One leading gamer in his twenties appeared to be slim and healthy with a physique similar to an endurance athlete. But tests revealed he in fact had the lung function and aerobic fitness of a heavy smoker in his sixties. [TelegraphUK]

So aside from the whole “these guys are built like morbid elders” confirmation, respectively, the gamers seem to check out pretty legit in the mental category. Dr. Micklewright further investigated emotions typically associated with professional athletes and was able to draw another correlation between gamers.

Elite athletes have unusually high levels of positive feelings and low levels of negative feelings such as depression and fatigue.

We saw similar characteristics in gamers, albeit not quite as pronounced.

The article fails to describe the actual kinds of testing that Micklewright conducted for his research, but no doubt the experiments probably involved RC Cola and a bunch of those naked lady office pens. That’s right: tip the pen upside down, watch the clothes vanish, record the number of deep, hyperventilating breaths from the gamer and then divide that number by how quickly it takes them to chug the soda. Why yes, yes I am a doctor. Now what say you lay down on this medical bunk bed here and remove those clown shoes?

Glad to see Tax dollars are going to such worthy research :P

What a waste of research and funds.

Pretty obvious - elite athletes are better than gamers who do nothing fitness wise.

Dont even need to be a doctor or scientist to know that someone who doesnt do aerobic fitness has a pathetic lung capacity vs someone who does.

It makes them ignored, since they contradict the agenda of the types of people behind this shit.
