In something of a stunner, Gabe Newell showed up on stage at the Sony press conference during E3 2010 today to announce not only Portal 2 coming to PlayStation 3, but Steam as well.

He was a bit self-effacing, and admitted that he has been quite outspoken about PlayStation3 in the past; in some ways, his embracing of Steam on the PlayStation 3 could be considered a sort of apology.

Launching with Steam is Portal 2; what Newell says will be “the best console version of the game.”

This is where we insert a wink emoticon. The best console version; of course Gabe is still firmly sticking to Valve’s PC guns.

The announcement of Steam on PlayStation 3 is huge news; this is the first console version of the incredibly diverse gaming platform that has revolutionized PC gaming. No details on how Steam will work with or fit in with PlayStation Network have been announced.

Wow, isn't that a turn around? Have Microsoft pissed off Valve or something? All I know is this leads the way to some Left 4 Dead on the PS3 if they're now bothered learning system.

No idea how Steam isn't going to totally clash with PSN...

They've made them compatible for some games and others being modded to suit Mac without re-buying so maybe they might patch the games or mod them to work on PS3 without re-buying them.

Be interesting to see how it goes.

Didnt know Orange Box was on PS3?

wonder if that means L4D will go to PS3 as well. or if its just released games from now onwards.

Orange Box was the debacle that started the war of words. EA had another studio do the conversion since Valve refused to waste time learning to code for such a radically different set of hardware. The end result was a giant turd that no one ever fixed. If you ever see it for cheap, don't be tempted.

I wont, I have it on 360 best game box ever.
Plus I got HL all eps on PC too. No need for it on PS3. :)
