Does anyone here play it? I'm still not entirely sure what it is, yet I'm massively intrigued. |

Ditto. Read a bit on it in game informer I think and yeh seems like some people can go crazy and get quiet creative with it. I'm thinking it would be quiet addictive and time consuming, which is partly the reason I havent gone further than peaked curiosity with it |

I downloaded an app called Eden - World Builder for the iPhone. It's just the building part of Minecraft, but it has me curious. I don't know why, but I feel willing to get sucked into this one. |

It's not an iPad native app, but you can use it on it. There are apparently a heap of actual Minecraft clients coming for the iDevices soon. |

I nearly posted a thread on this a couple weeks ago. I'm addicted to it. It's well worth the money, although it is very 'old skool'. The visuals are very basic but do the job. You get no hints or anything as to what to do - unless you are super smart or patient, the Wiki is essential to get the basics although once you know the basics of crafting you can work stuff out through experimentation, which is part of the fun. It's basically a huge sandbox, but also is one of the most tension filled and scare inducing games I've played - digging a deep mine, hearing the groans of the zombies and creatures and panicking incase one is behind you is one of the most tension filled experiences I've ever had. You get out of it what you put in though - it's not for everyone. |

Sounds even more up my alley than I thought. Anything in terms of multiplayer? Can you at least go visit each others worlds? |

Haven't tried multi yet. From what I understand it's one big communal world*. You all can either do your own thing or work together, so basically it's the same as single player but you all inhabit the same world. You need to set up a server though, I think. The cool thing would be you don't need to all be online at the same time to play together, say if the goal you set together is to build a huge castle. But then you could all work together, for example, to raid a dungeon. Oh yeah. I forgot to mention, it does have dungeons. I think an OSG multi would be brilliant. Even without multi though - I highly recommend it at the price. edit - *by one communal world I mean one world per server - so you can set up a server that only OSG could access, for example. Not one world for every noob in the world. Again though, I'm not sure. Edited by felicitous blue, Saturday Dec 11 2010, 11:36 PM.

If you are interested in this I recommend buying very soon... it's about to move from Alpha to Beta, and when it does the price doubles and you'll only get updates to the full release. (Alpha includes free updates 'for ever' and the dev has commited to this promise, apparently) |

Did you get it? What do you think? They're adding a narrative when it goes Beta - not sure I'm sold on that idea, but I can see it will make things a bit easier to start with. |

Takes a while to work out what the hell you're doing, which really doesn't play well into the sudden onslaught of monsters which quickly appear at night and blow your shit up. It's not like a manual is in easy grasp or anything. I found there was a wiki once I went to the forums. I was expecting more of a blank slate to work with as well. If there's something you want to create then you're going to have to pull down half the place first, which is a pain because of the freakin monsters. Also, the respawn doesn't move. I've been trying to build some sort of a house for protection up a mountain across the water where it would be a little harder for them to get to me, and it's a real bitch to get back there when they keep sneaking up on me and exploding continuously. I'm sure I'll figure it all out... A narrative is a crap idea. It's the fact that it's a giant sandbox you can completely manipulate that makes it appealing. They shouldn't ruin that by sticking rails on it. |

The idea is "don't die". I think the spawn is deliberately in a place you are unlikely to build at, but it may be chance. Most of the stuff you use to build with is inside the mountains. I tend to dig at night, go exploring during the day. You've probably worked this out Hiss but in case anyone else gets minecraft, a few tips - resign youself to the fact that the first in-game day (or two) will be spent chopping down trees and trying to find some easily discovered coal during the day, then hiding in your hidey hole at night. Once you have coal you can make torches and start going deeper. You need a pickaxe to get the coal, and it's the grey blocks with black spots. You can make a wooden pickaxe though - see the wiki... usually you can find coal near the surface, look around for an open "cave" that has the telltale black/grey blocks. On the first day I quickly chop down some trees, then head for a mountain side that looks like a good "base" and dig a cave out the side, leaving a 'wall' at the front holes in it to look out of (actually I build the wall back up...). Then I make a workbench and make a door which I fit on the cave entrance. If you have time, make a pickaxe and go looking for coal, otherwise once it gets dark hide in your cave with the door closed. Make sure there's an alcove in the cave incase any archers come (or just don't leave windows - you can see through the door - you need to be able to see out to tell when it's light again. I get claustrophobic so leave windows, also I like laughing at the monsters). Next day - hunt for coal, cut down trees. From there things get easier. At night, start digging into the mountain, make sure though you put torches up cause monsters spwan in dark areas. I did all that in my current "world", then started digging into the mountain. My mountain lair now has tunnels running through it, exiting all over the shop and has big caves I've mined out. I also dug straight up and am building my castle at the top, around cloud level. I build at night as well, now that my castle is sufficently secure that monsters can't get me. They gather round the walls and I laugh at them. Now I can also take the fight back to them with my shiny sword... I haven't bothered with armour yet. Tip - kill pigs, cook the ham on the furnace. ![]() Oh, and remember the world is randomly generated - if you start in a crappy world (eg no mountain near to spawn, can't find coal etc), just re-roll. And sorry, I should have posted the link to the Wiki.... essential. here it is for anyone else who jumps in - http://www.minecraftwiki.net/wiki/Main_Page With the narrative - I completely agree, it could be crap. The dev has said that it will be fairly non-intrusive and just designed to ease you in and then to give you something to do in the 'end game'.... we'll see. Strongly considering options to start up an OSG server for this. Not a problem for me to run it at all, except for my crappy connection speeds. I really don't want to switch over to the likes of Telstra, but iiNet have no interest in getting me off ADSL1 by the looks of it. |
