Right before the server crashed and died, I walked into one of Wolf's huts to hide as it was getting pretty dark and came face to face with an enderman for the first time. Freaky shit since it was such a small room. Had the silly idea of punching it and bolting down the massive mineshaft in the middle of the room. Didn't turn out too well because I couldn't get down the thing, so I bolted out the door and made a run for it. Turns out those things are very vengeful, because that bastard never gave up chasing until a creeper jumped out from somewhere and blew the crap out of me. I then respawned out in the ocean underwater, and after barely making it to the surface discovered that the beach was fucking LOADED with Creepers. And there was a cow right next to me.... I'm pretty sure they actually blew up the server and the world with it. That's how bad they are. |

Sorry, I got the massive shits with it and walked away. It crashed my computer AGAIN and corrupted the world AGAIN and I really want to kick Notch in the cunt repeatedly for this piece of shit we've wasted so many hours on while he sits back and rolls in his millions. I'm going to work out the the commands to put together a batch file that I can schedule to run twice a day that will cleanly stop the server, take a backup, and then fire it back up again. The majority of it's easy, it's just making it do a clean stop outside of the console that I need to figure out. Without me stopping it nicely, it's just corrupting everything. I'm sure someone's already posted it if I go take a decent look. This still won't change the fact that it's crashing my computer. Not a regular crash either, just total sudden shutdown. It only started doing it with 1.8 and it doesn't do it when the servers not running. Sorry guys, I hadn't had a chance to grab another backup and I couldn't be arsed setting up a better automation this weekend because it had pissed me off, it's my day job, and a quality game like Gears 3 was waiting for me that felt more deserving of my time and money. I'll sort it out when I get home. |

No rush Hiss, I'm sure everyone is busy playing other games ATM. It all seems like a bit of a hassle, no one would blame you for leaving it until the full release is out, things should run smoother then. |

It's not so much that it's a hassle for me, it's that it breaks easily and often, resulting in many hours that you guys have put into it being totally pissed up the wall. You would think that instead of putting in an XP feature that breaks shit horrendously they would put in a simple save system that actually DOES a save that can be cycled through every day. |

I'm only using the one, but I barely use it. I rarely play PC games, I download stuff in the morning when no one is on, and otherwise I'm just streaming movies from it. I would rather use my iPad and consoles for most things. That's why I'm happy to let you guys run amok on it. The Minecraft server doesn't use many resources anyway, but you have most of a pretty decent PC to use up. |

I connected one up on my iMac (Quad 2.8ghz, 8GB ram) and Im curious would a TimeMachine hourly backup that I have on that machine actually backup the server (well I know it would) but Necris was saying how would it backup a file in use. How would that script routine you were planning on setting up actually work, do you need to shut the server down to back it up or what? My understanding of how TimeMachine would work is backing up any changes in files like it does for most of my stuff I used to do on the iMac. |

Well, according to what I read, whether its accurate or not the Time Machine backup would still work apparently. and that iMac i have does it each hour. While I think on anyway, can you copy the server files over to someone else's host? Edited by JAMSIN, Monday Sep 26 2011, 02:34 PM.

Ill leave it running anyway see how it goes. jammer.dyndns.org if people want to use it. I'll leave it running since Wolf will want something to play and Im sure we can copy the server files over they look like windows files anyway e.g .dat, .mcr and .txt files in the world directory so Im assuming its all universal. |

I've tried a few ways to get it to back up live, but it's never worked 100% of the time. IF you go digging around in a world folder you'll see it's made up of a shitload of tiny files, and I'm guessing the snapshots aren't generally quick enough to grab all of them in one massive hit. No doubt a bit of search time in that, so I can't blame backup apps for not pulling it off on a single spindle with three people on building monster castles a thousand km's away from each other. It seems just one of those little bitch files out of place and it all turns to shit. So alternatively, I found it much easier to just stop it cleanly, copy the whole folder and fire it up again. The whole process can be done in less than a minute manually. Perhaps your backup software might have more luck, but generally any app with any sort of active database would need to be able to accept the call for a hot backup, and pretty much all of them do. This thing though is just a java app writing to a bunch of flat files sitting on the OS. Unless they implement something, like what I originally thought the save function actually did, then it's always gonna be based a bit on luck unless you stop it for that half a minute. |
