I can see lots of potential in the screen+controller. Did anyone play pacman Vs or whatever it was called. Or imagine a dungeon master type game with one person playing the dungeon master and the others playing through co-op on the big screen.

Single player, less so, but even if it's just used for maps/inventories etc would still be useful.

Whether it's enough to justify a purchase for a core gamer is another matter, depends on when the true next gen starts.

Demo of new Wii

Nintendo demo

Looks terrible.

So the guy playing the 'catch' game has to use the screen on the controller than the TV? may as well have just made the controller the console instead of through the TV and call it a Nintendo DSu

The dreamcast had a similar idea with stats showing up on the lcd screen on the controller for stats and whatever in games but how many people look down at that while playing - I never did so it was a useless feature.

Looks cheap and uncomfortable the controller, still catering to the kiddie market with these type of games too..

Only one controller compatible apparently......as in only one of the controllers with the screens are compatible per Wii U. So playing local games would mean there is only one player able to have the specific Wii U controller and the rest have classic controllers. Reason being, the power needed for the Wii U to simultaneously stream 4 different videos with different requirements would be quiet demanding

That's a pure speculation piece, and not a very well thought out one. These things don't need to be running a full game on each controller. None of the things I mentioned require much extra juice at all. The Dreamcast did it (though with much simpler screens) 10 years ago so I don't see why people would think it's such a big deal now. The main action will always be on the big screen.

These controller are still going to cost a ton each though. Looks to me like they were determined to be able to let you draw on them with the stylus. Gimmick feature at best and if they dropped the idea they they could have come up with something a bit more comfortable looking and no doubt better value.

Miyamato has said it's one controller per unit, but they're investigating the possibility of two.

But there seems to be some confusion around whether it supports one controller or it comes with one controller. I've seen conflicting reports and interpretations. Nintendo have done a really shit job of explaining this thing.

If it's one controller, that's fucking pointless and horribly designed. I went from hugely keen to massively over it in the matter of one little conference. Well done Nintendo.

Have a read of this. My interpretation is that as things currently stand it can only handle one controller, but they're still looking into whether two may be possible (ie, final console spec may be slightly different, or they my find some way of making whatever the bottleneck is more efficient, whether it's the streaming or the power use)

Dear God....

What's the point then? Do THEY even know???

I'm done with them already. If they're fucking up and talking shit this early it has no hope. Given that I won't be touching another MS console either, I can't believe that leaves me with just Sony. The Sega fanboy in me is crying. I'm gonna go hug my Saturn....

I know. It seems a bit retarded and very limiting. Having said that though, part of me wonders how much of a difference it will make "in real life", chances are that most of the time for 'core' games you'd be playing solo or online for multi anyway; removes the possibility of proper split screen though in core games (ie, if they're designed around the controllers screen) and given ninty's poor showing with online so far, it's a bit of a worry.

We’ve already heard that Wii U developers have received their final development kits for the console, but what do surprises do they contain? Well according to a source over at Neogaf the latest dev kits allow for voice chat, multitasking and facial recognition. Here’s a supposed list of the latest features:

Video Chat is available, but must be from the main menu of the system (not while playing a game).
Voice Commands are available (similar to this rumor we heard about the 3DS maybe?)
Facial Recognition (similar to features of the Xbox Kinect)
Ability to suspend games, similar to 3DS.
Ability to share achievements with friends by sending videos or screenshots with drawings on them.
Watch a friend play online
Multitasking (example: keep a text or video walkthrough open from the site while playing the game, swap back and forth as needed)

Watch a friend play online is an awesome feature IMO. Quick jump in jump out viewing would be awesome for those moments where you discover something awesome or hilarious in a game and want to share it. Also a good way to get people into games you might be playing. Notice a game someones playing that you haven't got yet, jump in and check it out and see if its any good ect

That sort of functionality has actually been a standard practice in IT since the very beginning. If anyone uses it at work currently, it would be a very basic version of Citrix, essentially.

Bandwidth? If you're playing online as you're sharing the screen, then pre-NBN I'd say the screen refresh wouldn't be crash hot for the person watching, but otherwise it shouldn't be bad at all. My concern would be more around the extra memory that it's likely to use on the host machine. They may be able to minimise the usage, but that's where the performance hit is likely to come from.

I think this sort of stuff is what the industry needs. Good job Nintendo, now all you need is more than one good game a year.

On Sunday, Nintendo announced the existence of the Wii U Pro Controller. A paddle for gamers looking for a more “core” experience on the upcoming Wii U. While it certainly looks similar to other controllers we’ve become all too familiar with, it does feature quite a few differences as well.

The first thing that I immediately noticed was just how light it was. Although it was secured to one of the many game stations in Nintendo’s booth (which added some slight bulk and weight), it still managed to feel even lighter than Sony’s original SixAxis remote (remember those?). You still have to take into consideration that even though it may look like final product in the press shots you’re seeing this week, it’s still very much pre-launch hardware that we’re looking at here, but when they eventually add in a battery to the picture, I can’t imagine it being that much heavier than it is.

Comfort is the second thing that came to mind. The backside of the Pro Controller has a contour and shape similar to the Xbox 360′s remote which, whether you’re a fan or not, you simply cannot deny that it’s a perfect shape for shooters, and marathon gaming in general. One thing it actually does better than the 360 remote is that it hugs your ring fingers as they grasp underneath the ZL and ZR triggers making it feel so ergonomic that you don’t want to put it down.

So how about the not-so-good? Look no further than the controller’s face buttons, analog sticks, and triggers to rain on this controller’s parade. I know that may sound weird considering how much I praised it for overall shape and feel, but comfort has nothing to do with what I’m talking about here

The controller’s face buttons don’t have anything particularly wrong with their “clicky-ness” or responsiveness, it’s more about the awkward placement and how far away that are from the analog sticks. The issue with the triggers is that they’re not in the shape of actual, you know… triggers. They’re simply longer buttons that happen to be located in a spot where you’d expect to find more curvature. And unfortunately the analog sticks are convex (like the PS3), instead of (the more comfortable) concave configuration (like the 360), found on the remote a year ago when it was still featuring the circle pads.

Keep in mind that this is still somewhat of an early look at the Wii U Pro Controller; so early that direct pictures of it weren’t allowed on the show floor. Nintendo now has the opportunity to take some of the feedback that they receive from this week and make changes accordingly. If the recent adjustments to the Wii U gamepad are an indication of anything, it’s that nothing is written in stone until it ships. With its comfortable shape and light-as-a-feather weight, Nintendo definitely has the chance to get this right, which will be to the delight of many “core” gamers, myself included.
