Took me a while to actually start playing it, but I couldn't help but pick this one up since I consider the franchise far more interesting and playable than the Killzone's. There's something very old skool in the way it all plays that is backwardly refreshing, given all the clunk we can thank to the Call of Duty series and those trying to copy it. I like the simpleness in just killing shit, and I particularly liked the 60 player team deathmatch games in Resistance 2, spawn camping and all. The levels were fun, not everyone having a headset kept it pleasant, and anyone milking cheap kills were soon overcome by the numbers of those seeking revenge. For straight up deathmatch, it was my pick by a long shot. So Resistance 3.... I've yet to try it out in 3D, but if Gears can be referred to as "grey" then Resistance 3 is a most definite "brown". It's not a bad thing, but for a main PS3 franchise it feels like it's letting itself down a little in the graphics department. The multiplayer maps show that the campaign should brighten itself up a bit once I get further into it but it won't be setting any benchmarks. It's the first thing you'll be thinking as you start playing it, but you'll soon let it go as it still does the job it needs to. Gameplay wise, it breaks no barriers. I'm not complaining because it's simple "shoot aliens till they die" approach is what I like about it. The AI seems to be set in a way where they try to cover each others backs from different directions and levels while still giving you options for dismantling them one by one. Your team mates are neither useful or get in the way. It seems to have found that point of challenging without being annoying. Multiplayer.... Well the 60 player matches have been dropped to 16, and COD style unlocks have been put in place. It still plays like Resistance and the maps still have that old skool feel to them. Perhaps I can adjust to this one since I at least haven't been killed by someone who should already be dead or shot through a wall by someone* with no job and too much free time. Still, I wish they'd kept their identity and kept to their own thing.*It is actually possibly to shoot through walls with one particular gun, but that's available to everyone. |

Nice review. I'm still very much in two minds about r3, I though r1 was great but then they fucked up everything I liked about it in r2 so I never got around to finishing that... I hear that they've gone back to the weapon-wheel of r1 (rather than the stupid for the game "halo" system of r2)..? Probably one I'll pick up if I get space between upcoming releases... Or in next years winter lull. |

Yep, full weapon wheel now. I didn't mind the campaign of R2, though I think the major let down was the health system. |

R1 was a cool, 'oldskool' shooter - turok inspired weapons, proper health system mixed with a bit of cod2. R2 was just another sci-fi shooter with some cheap enemies and stupid difficulty spikes. I gave up after I check pointed an area with two massive enemies and me holding two completely inadequate weapons.

I admit, I played far more of the multiplayer on R2 than the Campaign. You're right, you keep hitting those impossible bits that make you throw it in, but then you beat them and it's easy pickings again. |
