Been meaning to post about this for awhile now. Something I picked up the other week as a spur of the moment purchase due to a unused gift card continuously taunting me to be used sitting in my wallet for a fair while.

I mainly took the plunge on this one because I liked the movie player concept of it. The thought of hooning around and capturing some good footage of some reckless driving would be fun for awhile. The other reason was the games main concept of switching drivers/vehicles on the fly

It feels a lot like a burnout game crossed with a NFS game. The whole switching vehicles on the fly thing works beautifully and really creates a unique approach to handling both races and chase events. An example of this is, you could be in a race and on the freeway with a bunch of other drivers, a quick press of The Y button will put you in a birds eye perspective where you can scout out the traffic ahead. You spot a truck with a tanker attached, so you jump into that vehicle, slam the handbrake on and skid sideways, blocking the whole freeway. A quick press of RB will then put you back in your car and from there you can pick the spot on the tanker where you can squeeze underneath it and continue on your merry way as you watch the fellow races crash and collide into everything else.

In a pursuit situation, you could swap into a vehicle in the oncoming traffic and cause a head on collision with the guy your chasing.

The missions are all quiet fun and unique which keeps everything fresh. A look through the bird eye prospect zoomed right out will show you both main missions and side missions

Overall I was quiet surprised about how much I've been enjoying this game. The story narrative is a bit different but if you just go with the flow and enjoy some mayhemic driving......then you'll surely enjoy this one

This idea I think ruins it for me, the fact that you can just magically teleport to a car ahead of time and create an accident or roadblock just somehow goes beyond decent gameplay, as in trying a new game idea, but in a sense a stupid idea, why they don't just let you run around on foot like GTA for example to get a new car, its like they're almost there with the game but.. hold off on doing it.

Which is one of the reasons Im a bit wary of the new NFS game they've announced where you can run around but not really, sorta like you can switch cars but not really run around town like GTA - that is if I understood the preview article on it since it was a while ago.

Anyway back to Driver.. I recall the originals, they were good fun just plain cruising around driving but never could get out of the cars and do anything that you almost felt you should be able to.

Because they tried that in Driver 3 (or Driv3r as it was officially/spastically called), and it sucked.

Driver Should be all about driving. I actually quite like the 'dream' idea, and not messing about on foot... If I want that, I'll play GTA. (edit - should note, I haven't actually played the new driver, but only because I'm trying not to buy *every* game that tickles my fancy these days)

Thats true I agree, it should be more about driving, I didn't mean to exactly copy GTA but more, if you have to switch cars do it in some way thats not "teleported" and more on foot method of getting a new car or at least more realistic attempt such as go to your garage and switch or car dealer.

I guess like TDU2 was.

On another note.. Ive been waiting for Driver on PC, I'm almost tempted to get it since Im over NFS type games, but seems its not out for another week or two, yet consoles are out or been out for a while.

Seems we're back to the bad old days of PC releases being delayed. Batman's delayed on PC as well...

Dont knock it before you try it jammer, trust me it just works on a purely FUN level. Forget about realism or anything else but driving. The Cop chases (When your the cops) is awesome fun, effectively driving and managing both cop cars to take down a suspect is awesome

If theres a demo lurking around, i strongly encourage ppl to give it a shot

I played a couple of hours of this on PC.
Its not bad, driving is a bit more rigid than NFS' slip n slide style racing, it feels like the old driver series where you can drift around a corner quite fluid like, but I tend to over shoot / compensate and end up whip-tailing it down the road until i tap the brakes to straighten out.

The idea of magically teleporting to another car is ok, but it soon becomes too easy, like when you're doing a police mission to chase the criminal racing off its too easy to port into the car on the oncoming direction and have someone drive over and ram him and keep doing that, its almost stupid in some senses.

I could create an accident with a truck but why bother (unless you're planning to use the film director feature for some fancy recordings). I just find it ruins the story or I should say the principle of driving where, when you think about it, why would a random driver just decide to swerve into oncoming traffic to stop a criminal.. its a bit far fetched at that point with you causing havoc just for something so petty.
Same for when I was helping kid win a race, you think of the aftermath of doing that, I spent more time micro-managing the other drivers to block the road and cause accidents than I did actually driving.

I did manage to find an awesome Dodge Viper to spin around and drive, as much as I tried, the stupid car drives like it does in all other games though, slip n slide tail-whips down the road.

Does look nice on PC though and plays ok, however the annoyance of porting into a mission car or the constant cutscenes etc irks you when all you want to do is JUST FUCKING DRIVE! :D
