Has anyone else heard or been following the Australian Based company Euclideon and their new gaming engine designed to have unlimited detail?? Reading this months game informer and its the first time I've heard of them and apparently they been causing quiet a bit of mixed feelings (Astonishment and skyptesim) on what they actually claim to have developed in creating graphics that are 100,000 times better than anything today. Anyone that hasn't heard, I'll try to explain below but don't blame me if I miss something or have no real idea what I'm on about. Essentially what theyre done is built a converter that converts regular polygons into unlimited data or point cloud data. Turns out something like converting polygons at a rate of 64 atoms per cubic millimeter. That equates to 1,000,000 atoms per cubic inch. Essentially it able to do this effortlessly and can run on anything from a PC to mobile phone. The demo level that has been developed and can be found on utube, is run purely on software and is approximately one kilometer squared. My understanding on how theyre able to do this is the fact that instead of working and processing the polygons and viewing around the 3d model, the conversion into atoms allows them to break down the object and unwrap it so it fills the screen so that each pixel on the screen represents one atom. I could be wrong but that how I took it. I strongly recommend watching the utube presentation (Whichi can post later, when I'm not on my iPad) or picking up this months copy of game informer. This kind of tech looks amazing and could revolutionize the way games look and developed in the future. Game development time would actually be shortened because artists wouldn't be restricted by polygon counts or have to redo the objects a number of times for different draw distances. Plus theyre able to scan objects in the real world and put them straight in as a complete object. Exciting stuff. Anyone else got opinions or skepticism? Mine crafts Notch has been very skeptically outspoken by this and apparently has set himself up to get burned. I'll take a quote out of game informer; "It's obvious that Dell is taking no pleasure in correcting his harshest critic, but he presses on his own defense 'there were other things he said too, like this is just an atomontage engine. But that's just a physics engine, for a limited number of points. It only shows tiny things like pot plants, or smallish plots of sand. The mistakes that notch made were so bad that, if we were less kind, we would be able to discredit his actual understanding of a lot of stuff in general'" |

I read just the first part of Notch's rant and it becomes evident by both that and his game that he has no idea how to conserve effort where it's needed. His description of how he thinks it works sounds wasteful, which is probably why he's putting out a clunker of a java game. Give me Carmack's opinion and I'll take notice, but not a toss pot that has proven so far that he can have a good idea but can't program for shit. |

Carmack was more balanced if I recall correctly. It's basicaally just a newer version of voxtel tech (emember Comanche anyone?) and the main issue is the amount of memory needed if I also recall correctly. I'll see if I can find eurogamers "digital foundry vs..." Personally, I think it's certainly interesting but don't fully believe all their claims.
