It looks like 3D is here to stay but, according to a recent survey, gamers don's seem too keen to have it injected into their hobby of choice.

3D is in the title of Nintendo's newest handheld, Sony is pushing the technology with the PlayStation 3 and rumors have begun circulating that the next Xbox console might incorporate it as well.

But, according to games comparison and marketplace guru Playr2.com, the (slight) majority of the masses don't want to see it in their games.

Playr2 recently conducted a survey questioning 1,001 gamers, posing questions related to the future of 3D in gaming. When asked if they would welcome the introduction of 3D technology into future console releases, 51 percent of respondents answered "no." Only 47 percent said they would like to see 3D in next gen consoles while two percent were unsure.

"Rumors are constantly flying around about the next big console releases, so we wanted to see what gamers would think about the possibility of a 3D enabled console," said Playr2.com founder Simon Kilby. "It was surprising to see that the majority were against it, but many seemed to be disappointed by the technology..."

According to the survey, 44 percent of those who said they were against 3D consoles said they felt it was unnecessary, while 28 percent claimed to have played on the Nintendo 3DS and been "unimpressed" with the console. Finally, 22 percent said they felt that 3D technology would impair the gaming experience, rather than improve it.

While it's unlikely this survey will change any of the Big Three's minds, Kilby said he hopes the results will at least give Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo some food for thought.

"3D, given its current popularity in cinema and television, does seem to be the next logical step in gaming; but I think developers will have to be careful to tackle the issues that the Nintendo 3DS seemed to raise with motion sickness and the like," Kilby said. "Our study proves that many think it to be unnecessary, or even an impairment on the gaming experience; so it will be interesting to see what happens when the consoles are finally released."

If you don't like it or it makes you sick then don't fucking use it! Just turn it off! I think it seriously adds to the experience when used properly and I would much rather they DID spend their time on something like this, which is actually game related, instead of FACEBOOK, TWITTER AND MSN INTEGRATION!!!!

Agree wholeheartedly. I don't think 3d is the "killer app" that going from black and white to colour was, or moving from 2d to 3d in games. But I do believe it's about equivalent from going from SD to HD.

Remember back when the current gen consoles where "next gen" and HD TV penetration was relatively low? There where similar debates all over the place about whether HD was worth it. I was even in two minds myself (wondering whether the extra processing on the higher res was worth it, or better spent on higher frame rates/bigger worlds/better ai etc). Now I think very few people would dispute the worth of HD, or think of choosing to play in SD rather than HD.

Give it a few years and I think we'll be in the same situation with 3d...
yo listen up here's a story
about a little guy that lives in a blue world
and all day and all night and everything he sees
is just blue like him inside and outside
blue his house with a blue little window
and a blue corvette
and everything is blue for him and hisself
and everybody around
cos he ain't got nobody to listen to

i'm blue da ba dee da ba die...

I think 3D is horrible. We checked it out at the shops in JBHiFi on the TV's and games on Friday.

The only thing going for it is it does add depth and fair detail of crispness but its terrible for me as I find if you're not looking at the focal point its directing you to it looks blurry and almost like its screwing with your eyes like a hyperspace tunnel effect almost.

This was wearing their goggles and glasses, I didn't see any 3D TVs that didn't require goggles etc.

The sport/action scenes were ok, the basketball one I watched seemed jittery and badly focussed on so not sure if thats TV related or what, but some of the stuff shown did look good e.g the golf one as I said for the depth and it did seem quite real when looking at the object they want you to focus on, though I found heavy action/motion sequences seemed jittery.

I don't think 3D is the same as saying its similar to when SD and HD came out, as its not improving the quality of the picture/scenes like SD and HD was, its adding a new effect to the outcome of the item being shown if you know what I mean, increasing resolution and quality is one thing and adding a virtual 3D like depth is another I think.

Jammers, if all your basing your opinion on is a brief demo in a shop then you've got nothing. For decent 3D, the TV can and should be calibrated to the distance you sit from it along with your own acceptable level of depth. Even then, it takes a while for eyes to really adjust. It always feels a little forced for the first 5 minutes and then you settle into it and it just clicks, like with those magic eye pictures. It looks far sharper with the TV's than it does in the cinema's. Ultimately though, it's just a standard feature now. Your next TV will in all likely hood have 3D just built in. It's not an argument of whether it's worth paying any extra money for anymore, it's just part of the furniture (pun intended).

The screens that don't need glasses, like what the 3DS has, requires you to be sitting square in front. It turns into a mess from a different angle, which is I'm sure what the hold up is with that technology. Fine for a handheld, but the glasses are still a better option for the TV.

Missing my point anyway - if you don't like it then don't bother with it. At least though it does contribute something to gaming for a lot more people than the years they've wasted with social media and advertising crap that they have been. What exactly causes this urge in people to have to speak up against something like this? Fark, let us dumbasses with the goggles enjoy it and by the time the rest of you get onboard then they may have just done enough research to improve it to where you want it to be, unless you'd rather tell them you need more Facebook.

I could never see those magic eye pictures.

But anyway, I wouldn't go out of my way to pay for 3D, even if it was a 10/15min sample test in a store, its still rubbish, even at the cinemas I never liked it and spending a couple of hours watching something there in 3D.

I don't get excited enough over it to bother which goes the same for anything with social media rubbish in it and linking to Facebook and so on.

As with social media crap, 3D is being force-fed and overhyped to everyone so its bound to cause people to argue its usefulness and irrelevance to things.

My main gripe with 3D typically stems from movies being forced into using 3D for its fancy effects and story lines being compromised to suit the use of 3D, they all try to make use of the 3D and it ruins the decent camera action and whatever else all to suit the stuff coming out the screen etc. But I said all that before in another thread anyway.
