The newest game in the Rainbow Six series has finally been confirmed today. Known as Rainbow 6 Patriots, this latest Tom Clancy first-person shooter won't be out until 2013, making it at least a five-year wait in between Rainbow Six console releases as the most recent of the bunch was Vegas 2 in March 2008.

The wait may have been for the best, as the game was criticized at the time for being too similar to the original Rainbow Six: Vegas, released in November 2006.

The setting for Patriots wasn't confirmed in today's announcement -- only that it "captures the reality of modern-day terrorism" -- but you can bet it won't be set in Las Vegas again. Like the Vegas games, it's being developed by Ubisoft Montreal, although it's doing this "with the support of" Ubisoft Toronto and Ubisoft Red Storm.

The single-player is said to feature a dynamic storyline with multiple playable characters. In the same exact bit of marketing speak we heard in today's Grand Theft Auto V announcement, the franchise is apparently going in a "bold new direction."

"Terrorism has evolved, and so has Rainbow 6. In Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 Patriots, all the team play, tactics, and realism that fans of the series love have been coupled with an exciting new narrative direction," said Ubisoft creative director David Sears. "This adds an unprecedented level of humanity that will make Tom Clancy's Rainbow 6 Patriots an extremely tense and immersive experience."

Players assume the role of Team Rainbow as they face off against the True Patriots, a group of revolutionaries who believe the government has been corrupted by corporations. The Patriots have set out to take down the government and replace it with what they feel is a right and just system, a scenario which presents Team Rainbow with "critical scenarios that will require them to make tough ethical decisions in order to stop this new breed of terrorists."

The main attraction for many will be multiplayer, and the game will of course include cooperative and competitive multiplayer modes. It sounds as if there will be new ways to communicate and coordinate with teammates.

The 2013 date was as specific as the announcement would get. It'll be available on Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.

I love the "This is not actual gameplay footage" promoted throughout.

The thing that gets me as usual with these games is the guy has no special headgear yet has some kinda predator / digital thermal vision to see through cars.

Seems pretty much 24 and Jack Bauer-ish style solutions, which might be pretty good, with the 'kill one guy to save thousands' scenario.
