Blitz, I figured you may be interested in this at least The makers of Arma (Bohemia interactive) have released a heli sim. Link It's called "take on helicopters" which is a bit weird, but the screens look pretty good. The heli's in Arma where pretty sim like as well, which bodes well. Out now for digital download. Gonna look at getting it today. |

Yeh I saw that a few weeks ago on steam. Watched a couple of vids and looked pretty cool. Actually going through starting sequences manually. The thing that would make me get this sooner would be having a proper flight stick, instead of a mouse keyboard setup. But more than likely just end up buying it when things get a bit quieter. Be good to learn the actual startup sequence of the heli in case a situation, like zombie apocalypse arises and we're in need of evacuation ect |

Blitz, you really should do a test flight/introductory lesson with heliwest. Awesome fun. I must admit though I was scared shitless most of the time, partly cause I couldn't get the thought out of my head that I was going to flip the bird during a turn. |

I've looked into doing it heaps of times, just never got around to doing it. Partly because if I do and I'm down there speaking to the instructors aswel its going to up my desire to get my CPL too an unbearable level...... One day, I'll do it Didn't know u had done it, that's awesome. Need details :p How much hands on time? What maneuvers were u allowed to do? You get a run down on start up sequences? |

You start of with theory, like me you probably know most of that but there where a few little thing that even the best sims don't really show/do. I can't remember exactly how long you spend flying - about half an hour anyway, which doesn't sound like much but feels a lot longer when you are in the air. They give you a choice of runs - you can do a more scenic run down over freo, or you can go close by what's basically a bunch of fields and have more time for maneuvers. I chose the latter, of course (fuck scenic!) You run through the full start up sequence, including preflight checks. The instructor takes off and clears jandakot, then you're on stick from there. You start off with level flight, then banks, climbs and descents and then some hover practice (she - the instructor - said you only get to do that if you get the hang of the other stuff, I think she probably says that to everyone though). Then she showed off some high speed/low level maneuvers (in her words - imagine were in 'nam, you're the gunner!) and threw in some hig banked turns. Then I got to fly us back to the airport. It's way harder than any sim. You need this combination of total concentration and absolute calm, bit zen. As soon as you start thinking about what you are doing it goes to shit, that's what I found at least. The cyclic is super-sensitive, hovering was stupidly hard and was the point i was most scared I'd fuck up and die. Oh I forgot to mention - she also showed what happens if you lose engine power (ie autorotation) - by effectively shutting down the engine power. That was cool I must admit, I think it was my not losing my shit at that which led her to do the strafing run through the fields at about 5 meters altitude.... I'd get my chopper license except for the cost, I wish I'd done it 15 years ago but at my age I'd be unlikely to leverage it into a job ... So spending a hundred thou on getting a license just doesn't add up. |

Cool, im gonna have to do it. Might suggest it as a Chrissie pressie from the family. At least i can then say Ive done it, taken control of a helicopter in real life and therefore be the designated pilot in amidst a situation where a heli is the only means of escaping the incoming zombie apocalypse I remember reading the course outline which stated that you must complete an autorotation landing as one of the training checks. Bit insane, but apparently still safer than a fixed wing engine failure |

Yeah, I worry more about a plane losing engine than a heli (the few times I've been up in one). It's definitely worth doing blitz, I got a voucher as a birthday present otherwise I probably wouldn't have forked out the dough myself, but having now done it it's definitely worth the price. And you get a certificate.... Edit - btw, I got Take On Heli's, it's a resource hog like Arma but very good. You can do full start up sequence, you can even get out of your heli and walk around. The flight dynamics are more refined than Arma, about on par with flight sim x - maybe a bit better, seems to simulate pockets of turbulence and ground effect a bit better.
