Went up for iOS on the App Store just now. It's universal and about $7.50.

Currently devoid of creepers, animals and online play unfortunately. You can play multi over wifi.

It's a builder only, no crafting

It's following the same path as the regular version. It's still in alpha according to the startup screen. The beta will have all those goodies.

I have to say, they've put their knock off to shame. Eden was the only one of any real quality (not including Junk Jack), and this official version is already far more solid, smooth, and easier to control.

Worth getting then???? I'm umming and ahhing over it at the moment. I'm trying to go cold turkey on iOS purchases cause I already have too much crap on my iPad and have spent a lot on games in general this past couple months ... But I've wanted a good minecraft on iPad for a while, I got mooncraft or whatever it's called and it's ok but.... Well, actually no it sucks.
yo listen up here's a story
about a little guy that lives in a blue world
and all day and all night and everything he sees
is just blue like him inside and outside
blue his house with a blue little window
and a blue corvette
and everything is blue for him and hisself
and everybody around
cos he ain't got nobody to listen to

i'm blue da ba dee da ba die...

Mooncraft is a good idea, but terribly executed.

If you're happy to just be building things, then it is easily the best on iOS. Most of the clones that have popped up only do this function, with the exceptions of Mooncraft, Crafted and Junk Jack, so it puts it fairly high up the list from the start.

However, it's price is steep for an iOS title, but they're clearly trying to use the same pricing model as the PC version. Not sure if that means they're going to jack the price up as it goes beta, but you have to assume they're looking at this as supporting it's development in advance. I don't think that's going to fly in this environment.

It's a leap of faith really. If you've already played Eden or World Explorer and are happy with the same sort of deal but better implemented and more polished then you'll be pretty happy off the bat. Otherwise, might be best to wait till development moves along a little further.

Many are saying you still get more bang for your buck with Eden once you actually start playing around in it.

HI EVERYBODY!

I hope you have had a great Christmas and a fun New Year’s Eve! Minecraft – Pocket Edition was released for iOS and Android in the middle of November. We went to Minecon, had vacation and then the Christmas came by and a lot of gamers got a smartphone/tablet and bought Minecraft – Pocket Edition. As I stated in a previous post we had an initial plan of making Minecraft – Pocket Edition more like Minecraft Creative. But alas we were wrong. We have read tons of comments and feedback and it seems like we made a huge mistake. You wanted monsters, resources, animals and more different blocks. This means that the initial code we had written didn’t exactly fit with the new plan where we wanted to add all the stuff you have been asking for. So we have been reorganizing, rewritten and changed the whole plan for Minecraft – Pocket Edition.
So where is my update?

We have planned to submit and update by February the 8th. Then Android Market and the iOS AppStore must approve it and it will be in your hands.
What will the update include?

In the background a lot of stuff has changed to support the survival aspects of the game. You will see some neat looking animals and new blocks. Crafting won’t be in this update since we need to redesign the GUI for it and it will need some iteration and thinking. But the great part is that the foundation for survival will be mostly done and we can throw out much more fun updates! Yay! :D And hopefully the progress of the updates will be much more faster. Oh, and of course some bug-fixing have been done too. Doors and fences will be in there it too!

Huge mistake is an understatement. Regardless, putting out even a creative version without doors is a mistake in itself.

Yeh i agree, in what world would a simple 'Creative Version' be just what we would want for our iOS & Android devices

People had been clamoring for an official mobile version of Minecraft for some time, and after a brief period of Xperia Play exclusivity, Minecraft - Pocket Edition [$6.99/Lite] launched for iOS this past November. Despite the high anticipation, most fans found the release underwhelming due to it lacking the major components of its desktop counterpart, like enemies and crafting. Those were the major reasons we didn't totally love the game in our review, although it was a totally decent creation-only version of Minecraft on the go.

Developer Mojang heard the player feedback loud and clear, and immediately put a plan in action to get the missing components stuffed into Minecraft - Pocket Edition. Part of that plan was releasing an update with a bunch of behind-the-scenes infrastructure stuff that will allow for the addition of survival elements and crafting. We detailed this update last month, and although I think it's hitting a wee bit later than Mojang had wanted, the update is now live for the Android version of the game, and the iOS version is currently in review with Apple and should be hitting at pretty much any time.

In the updated version of Minecraft - Pocket Edition, there's now a day/night cycle and the first introduction of creatures to the world, sheep and zombies. You get new blocks to build doors, fences, and gates with, and since crafting isn't part of the mobile package just yet, there is an assortment of pre-made tools to help you get by until you're able to build your own someday. It sounds like the new update goes a long way in rectifying the fairly mundane first release of Minecraft - Pocket Edition, so be sure to keep your eye out for it to hit the iOS App Store soon.

New update out. New control scheme option that makes it easier to play on iPad, and pigs have been added.
