I never played the game when it first came out. Too many other options at the time I think, but it developed enough of a cult following that it kept me curious. I can see what all the fuss is about now, and for $20 it's an awesome pick up.

It still has a messed up existence though...

This is a game that was an original Xbox exclusive. It was a big win for Microsoft to lure Oddworld Inhabitants away from the Sony camp at the time, and they made good use of the superior hardware. Now MS seem to be giving them the stink palm instead.

When they submitted the game for approval, MS rejected on the grounds of their stupid file size restrictions - something Sony don't give two hoots about. The game went up on PSN while they tried to sort the situation out with MS by both reducing the file size a tad and also requesting it go up as a Games on Demand title that has no suck limit, since it is a full fledged worthy-of-the-shelf game. MS rejected this stating they only accept games with a Metacritic score of 80 or over. When it was pointed out that the original game has an MC score of 88, and the PSN version was already pulling a rank of 82 while all this red tape was going on, they changed their response to it needing to be a million seller - not the original, but the HD version.

All this has been followed by the public through OH's very open comments on Twitter. This is following the complaints of many indie developers who have been told that if their game hits PSN before Live then they can forget about it.

So it seems that thanks to MS's own stupidity, this may once again be a console exclusive game.

I'd forgotten this was due out. I'm guessing it's out now. From what I read they lavished quite a bit of love on the remake.

I'm a bit wary though about how well the gameplay would stand up over time, especially as I never played it first time round so won't get the "nostalgia kick". For some reason, oddworld and Abe in particular just never grabbed me. I was vaguely interested in strangers wrath at the time, more for the mechanics than setting, but my dislike of Abe was enough to put me off, also if I recall correctly it arrived quite late in the life cycle of Xbox.

Been out a couple of weeks.

My thoughts were exactly the same as yours. Never really got into the Abe character, and I didn't really expect the overall experiance to stand up, but there was enough talk to make me curious. Fact is, this game could definitely be sold for alot more if it was new to the shelf today. Some of the more platforming elements might have gotten some more tweaking, but it controls brilliantly, tons of character without all the Abe-ness, and is original in it's use of critters as weaponry that still stands up well as it's own beast. They really have given it a respectable lick of paint too. They haven't just upped the res and still have everything looking a bit blocky and flat.

Wonder if there is a comparison video floating around...
