Friend posted this link to me to check out the new mod for Arma2 (possibly expansion pack required). http://www.dayzmod.com
I watched a couple of Vids on youtube, its permadeath where you die you start again Wolfster would love this. But also noticeable was that voice chat promotes your location as does gunshots to the zombies so they know where to look for you. Other players may decide to team up with you or just kill on site and loot your shit... so you never know what to expect. Edited by JAMSIN, Sunday May 27 2012, 09:18 PM.

$30 for arma 2 and expansion on steam, getting really curious on this, average lifespan apparently is about 27 min. Wolf might even have a legit reason for making a new character every half hour

Ok I decided to get it and it's strangely fun, i hopped on just to give it a five min try, and over an hour later I relised I'm still playing it. the concept is easy to understand - survive, and you definitely have to actually be careful to survive, zombies respond to sound and such, so the louder you are the more zombies your gonna attract, and since you start with a grand total of about 20 bullets you gotta be careful, plus the fact you fire once and you get more coming from all around the area, and meaning more shooting meaning more zombies coming. You run out of ammo quick and then your on the run till you can hide/get in a house then you scavenge like all hell for more ammo and food/water. I'll explain further later if anyone can be botherd to read it. |

Sounds like the game I've been dying for someone to make for years. Such a simple concept that only Left 4 Dead has come close to scratching. |

Yeah Im planning on getting soon, not sure if the Arma2 original will be transferrable since I already own it and I planned to get the Covert Op pack which contains the Arrowhead one, Covert Op pack and the base Arma2. All I need is the two x-packs. If its transferrable let me know ill send it to someone, but if you don't have it you'll need the Xpacks anyway so its cheaper to buy the covert op pack and get all 3... so.. kinda defeats the purpose of my proposition. |

Blitz, you don't need physical and digital copy, just buy the Arma2 DLC Xpansion pack thing on its own or do what I did and accidentally buy the arma2 + pack without realising. Since I thought there was 2 expansions not one. |

Buy Combined Operations and you get ARMA 2 + Operation Arrowhead with it. Cant find it as a stand alone purchase.....would probably still be ~$30 |

You can get standalone OA on Steam. So is anyone playing day-z, and when? I have it downloaded but am too chicken to try it alone. I think I'd be dead in minutes. |

I tried it a week or so ago, but I think they were having issues or something and it was a bit glitchy to join any servers. |

Just played this for about half an hour or so. Bit disappointed tbh. Possibly due to it being "night" on the server I played. Couldn't figure out how to get the flashlight working, none of the usual Arma key bindings worked and neither did randomly mashing the keyboard. Most disappointed that they're fast zombies. I hate fast zombies. Also, you can't seem to outrun or outsmart them, they just keep pace. Eventually, after getting a pack of them chasing me, I lost them just by running back to the beach and into the water. Perhaps I'm expecting too much. |

Running zombies? Meh. A hoard of regular walkers would be brilliantly tension building if done properly. That's what I've been dying to see. |

No compromise. Running "infected" such as in 28 Days Later are fine, they aren't actually zombies. I can wear it games like Dead Island where I don't think it would work too well otherwise. Left4Dead had a nice balance and I respect it massively. The direction Dead Rising goes in is where they should be. Seriously, how hard would it be to create an original Night of the Living Dead situation in a game like Arma? Have a small town surrounded by fields fillin gup with zombies slowly heading in your direction, sniffing you out, as you hurriedly have to set up shop and fortify, plan escape strategies and then see how long you can last? We've had these sort of elements hinted at us with L4D Survival mode and Killing Floor, but just not quite there. |

You nailed it exactly Hiss. Running through a forest with 5 or 6 zombies chasing you Benny Hill style is not my idea of a good zombie game. It was dull, there was no sense of panic just tedium - keep running until you hit water then swim. Let the AI cheat, call it 'special zombie sense' or whatever, but it would be so much better is once you aggro a zombie it just starts slowly following you regardless of line of sight. Sure, you can easily outrun it... You think you're safe... Only to come back out of the house you just explored to find a pack of zombies waiting for you. It wouldn't even be that hard to program... Alert zombie, it tracks towards you as long as you're with X meters (using the classic 'zombie' routine we've had in games since the 80's, with a bit of decent path finding thrown in), while 'alerted' any near by zombies join it and that increases the range of detection (eg range = size of herd squared). Would also mean its easy to escape a lone zombie, but run into a pack and you're screwed. Addit - just thinking about that idea, I can't believe they haven't done that. Imagine being able to lure a bunch of zombies into the town where you know a bunch of player killing bandits are hanging out (aggro a massive herd, run ahead and skirt the town to the opposite side from where the herd is, hide, they follow the most direct route to you which is through the town, chaos ensues). According to their official news site DayZ is being made into a standalone game with the main guy as project lead, but its via Bohemia Interactive, so whether or not its producing some quality stuff or buggy as shit standalone will be interesting to see. Hopefully though they make the damn zombies move slower like a more realistic method of zombies if you can call them realistic. |
