What counts as racism, and what can we do about the double standards set by society?

Quote:

1. a belief or doctrine that inherent differences among the various human races determine cultural or individual achievement, usually involving the idea that one's own race is superior and has the right to rule others.
2. a policy, system of government, etc., based upon or fostering such a doctrine; discrimination.
3. hatred or intolerance of another race or other races.

Hmm... seems pretty simple to me. The only problem is when people over-react and perceive something as racist when it isn't. Like depicting an angry black man as angry. Oh nuuuu! Racism~!

'Tis ridiculous.

So do you think there should be a handbook? Because I'm having a hard time telling what is and isn't racist these days.

Nappy headed hoes?

I don't think there should be a handbook; I think people should just stop caring about other people saying things that are "possibly" racist.

But what about cases where what they say is actually racist? Obviously we should say something about it, but the trouble is learning to tell the difference.

I'd so buy a Legend of Zelda Panda.

Yeah. Anyone who says one race is better then another is a racist. Even then, due to the fact that there are no races to begin with, there are no racists, just stupid people. And rude stupid people.

Why exactly do you think that there are no races? If humans have a single ancestor, it does not mean there are no races. Just like you and I are part of different families, even though we could likely trace our lineage back to some common ancestor.

Anyways, if someone blatantly says "Mah race > yo' race", it's rather obvious that they're being racist. What I think Michelle is bringing up as a topic is the more "grey areas", like certain imagery that some audiences may find offensive.

Indeed. While I believe that there are a lot of cases where people are just being overly sensitive, I also think there are incidents where people in prominent positions do say/do things that is racist. I also think that those people shouldn't just ignored, because silence causes problems more often than it solves them.
