Liexe returned from another long expedition away from the castle, a curious bundle of blankets tucked under his arm. He was tired and sore and wounded, limping his way home. Isi greeted him at the door and helped him with his things; the once great tiger he had met so many years ago now stood as a tall, lanky but muscular woman. The spell cast by the Great Witch had finally run its course with her. Her hair remained a bright orange color, stripes lined her skin, atop her head was a pair of rounded ears, and a tail protruded from her backside. Those will eventually fade away, Liexe knew, just like with everyone else. The two ascended a flight of stairs and went to his office, where Liexe carefully set his bundle in a chair. He sighed and slumped to the floor. "Are you okay?" Isi asked, kneeling down next to him. "I'll live," Liexe replied. "But if this egg turns out to be a dud, I'm throwing it out the window." He groaned and rubbed his face, falling backwards to lay on the floor. "How were things while I was gone?"' "Just fine," Isi responded as she reached up to the blankets. She pulled the fabric aside to look at the egg. It was very dull in color and seemed lifeless. "Well, if it does hatch, better it be here than in the hands of Ove." "Yeah. Where's Darius?" "He has not returned yet." "Hm. Let me know when he does." He rolled onto his feet. "Keep an eye on that for me, okay? I need to clean up." Isi nodded and Liexe left the study and retired to his bedroom for a short time. After cleaning up, he returned to the office to find that Isi had made an out-of-the-way spot for the egg. She made a nest of blankets for it and was in the process of cleaning the egg with a damp cloth to rid it of dirt. He thanked her, she nodded, and when she was finished she ushered him down to the kitchen to get something to eat, ensuring that the egg would be fine. |

Kassia sat in the shade of one of the many trees that dotted the quart yards around the castle that she called home. She was far enough away from the front gate not to raise alarm, but close enough to study the half human, half tiger woman that stood there. Kassia was sketching the woman, who she knew as Lady Isi, as fast as she could and as detailed as possible before the woman decided to leave or something when someone sat down beside her. She smiled, not even having to ask who it was. "Can you tell who that is?" She pointed down the road to an approaching figure, never taking her eyes off her task at drawing Lady Isi. "That's pretty good by the way," Alameth grunted as he got back up on his knees to peer down the road. "Huh. Well, I do believe it's our Lord and Savior." He said in a near dreamy voice. She rolled her eyes and looked up to see that he wasn't far off. It was Lord Liexe, the owner of this castle, their host, HER host. She vaguely thought that maybe she should do something to show her respect to show her thanks for everything he has done for not just her, but all kinds of mages but didn't even know what she would do so, forgetting her sketch, she uncomfortably sat there pretending to listen to Alameth. Where most of what he said wasn't all that important, a few things sank in as she watched Lord Liexe's slow, and now it appeared painful approach to the castle, like, "a group of Necromancers was found down near Gridlirn Lake but they got away..." and "There was rumor that the ancients were thinking about brewing up another storm..." That second one she had wanted to argue. The last storm had been harder on normal people than it had on anyone else. The necromancers had dealt with it the best actually. Kassia held up her hand and Alameth suddenly hushed up. He'd known her long enough to pick up on small body signals like that. He knew her spirit and knack for finding adventures and he loved following her on them. She was really interested in Lord Liexe for some reason. Something about him struck her as odd, it was a weird feeling she was getting from him. She strained her ears to try to hear what the two said to each other but all she could hear was some muffled voices carried on the wind. They walked together into the castle. She didn't know why she needed to, but suddenly she turned to Alameth and looked him dead on, "We need to follow them." A sly smile spread across his face to both eyes, the hazel glinted in the sunlight almost playfully as he pulled his hood up over his sandy blond hair, hiding his red highlights from the sun. "Then we better get going." Kassia smiled, she loved this about Alameth. He never questioned, he was always willing to take an adventure, no matter how small the adventure or how big the consequences. They entered the side door that led to the main corridor and set off at a light jog, coming out into the main foyer just as Lord Liexe and Lady Isi entered Lord Liexes personal quarters of the castle. A moment of indecision until she grabbed Alameth's hand and plunged onward, her steps almost too quiet to hear, but Alameth's... improvements were desired. After a couple more turns, they finally reached the corridor with the room Lord Liexe apparently desired because they disappeared inside. Kassia, having committed the entire walk to memory, she grabbed Alameth's hand and led him back the way they came and back into the main hall where they slipped into a dark alcove, far from anywhere that would see any activity. She sat on a bench that sat perpendicular to the wall while Alameth sat on the one up against the wall. It looked more comfortable. "So, I learned a lot." Alameth whispered, his eyes getting wide. Kassia couldn't help but smile, but smacked the side of his arm playfully, "Oh hush. We aren't done." "What is it we're looking for?" Alameth laid back against the wall, his chin resting on his chest and his face completely in shadows. Kassia thought about the question for a second. She never hid anything from Alameth. "I'm not sure exactly. I just got this weird feeling." And that was enough for him. He nodded and looked completely determined again. As they waited, they recounted more of the gossip they had heard about the Necromancers and the Ancients to pass time. It was really the only kind of gossip that interested either of them. Kassia interrupted Alameth mid-sentence to let out a morning dove coo. Down at the other end of the Main Hall, Kyrenia had been walking through and Kassia knew she wanted her involved in this for some reason. When Kyrenia didn't move, Kassia did the call again and she looked right towards them and started walking their way. Kassia looked towards the Corridor Lord Liexe was in and, deciding the cost was clear, blew her cover and ushered Kyrenia into their hiding place. She sat down opposite Kassia and raised an eyebrow in question. That was all she needed to do. Kassia smiled as Alameth dove into a tale of conquering heroes fighting evil forces and shook her head both in exasperation and because Alameth was asking her to recount how brave he was when slaying the troll. She turned away, leaving Kyrenia to fend for herself with Alameth's tall tales as she felt that similar pull in her chest again. She looked towards the corridor and her attention remained there until finally Lord Liexe and Lady Isi finally walked off and in the direction of the kitchens. Kassia didn't wait even long enough to give her friends a warning, she just got up, walked across the main hall, glancing around to assure no one was watching and dashed into the corridor. She could hear her friends behind her and knew they could keep up. She ran with them every morning. She made it to the room and the pull was stronger now, she was almost frantic to open the door but she held herself back and took a deep breath before calmly opening the handle with a shaking hand. She stepped inside and it was like the air was warmer inside this room than anywhere else in the castle, even though there was no fire lit. She wondered if everyone else could feel the difference, but lost the chance to ask because just then she saw something. It looked like a rock. A really weird colored rock that was rounded almost perfectly. And it was wrapped in blankets. She walked up to it and moved the blankets a little, realizing that the blankets resembled the looks of a little nest-like structure. Though it didn't look anything like she'd imagined it would, she knew exactly what this was. She wrapped both her arms around it and lifted it up, it felt like it fit perfectly in the contours of her arms. "Is that a rock?" Alameth asked, Kassia, having forgotten they were there, jumped slightly at the sound of his voice and then shook her head. "It's a dragon egg." She sighed quietly. She was about to put it down but right where her thumb was cracked a little. Dread and horror at the fact that she had just cracked a dragon egg ran through her, her face felt hot like she was going to cry. She had never cried before. Not even when she had seen her own father murder her mother. That wasn't even the worse part. Her mother didn't stay dead. She was reanimated, by her necromancer father who captured her mothers soul to control her to kill his own daughter. I'm sorry. Kassia heard a voice which jolted her out of her thoughts which brought her back to her fear that she cracked the egg. Kassia saw the egg crack more and saw something was breaking it from the inside. Thoughts of a baby dragon thrown into a war to help the mages ran through her head. After all, she was here training to become a soldier, what would they want to do to new born baby dragons? She knew of one king who killed dragons. Would they kill it too? Would they sell it? She looked up at her two friends who were both wearing looks of astonishment and wonder. "We need to leave. Now." The three friends didn't waste any time and split up. While the other two collected a few supplies to help them survive, Kassia left the castle with the egg in case it finished hatching and made noises. All the while making promises to it that she would keep it safe until it was old enough to fend for itself then it could go free. She had the uneasy feeling that something was laughing at her. Kassia, Kyrenia and Alameth found each other beside the stream where a waterlogged tree trunk created a bit of a dam. By then, an entire scaly nose was poking out of the shell with sharp little teeth all along the side of the jaw. Kyrenia switched all our luggage over to the three horses that Alameth had brought from the stables. Two of them were his, but he was stealing the third. Great. Kassia sighed to herself and clicked her tongue to urge her horse off into the night. |

After a filling meal, Liexe returned to his study - and was instantly perturbed. The dragon egg he went through all that trouble of getting was gone. He heaved a heavy irritated sigh. Darius appeared, seemingly out of thin air, in the door way. His hair was short and neat, his eyes the color of sapphires, and his clothes were a bit fancy. "Your orders?" he asked. He always knew when Liexe needed him for something. "Gather everyone in the great hall," Liexe said. Darius nodded and went to fulfill the command. 'Whoever did this could end up in a lot of trouble,' he thought. Turning on his heels, he made his way to the great hall. Once everyone was gathered, he stood in front of the main table and looked over the group of people that sat at the tables before him. Forty people inhabited his castle. He mentally made a note of everyone that was there - and who wasn't. Now he knew who he would be searching for. He gave a glance to Isi who stood to his right; she gave him a small signal to say something. He cleared his throat and looked back at the people. "Sorry for gathering you all here. But, I've been away for a while and I wanted to see that everyone was still here and doing okay. I've arranged for a shipment of supplies that will be arriving within the next three days, so be prepared to receive them. As for how my expedition went... Well, that's a story for another day." He gave everyone a smile. "I'm glad to be back. If anyone needs me, I'll be around." They all lingered in the great hall for some time. Liexe was greeted and welcomed home and he took time to catch up with everyone. He slipped out to have a quick talk with Darius and Isi about their runaway thieves, sending them out to search the grounds for any traces of them. As the two left, he turned around to go back into the great hall but was met at the door by a young woman with auburn hair. Aki; she had come here with Isi several months ago, and has made the vegetation flourish with her earth based magic. She stared up at him with dark green eyes. "Did you find it?" she asked. She was a dragon, so of course she knew what Liexe had been after. After all, how could he keep that a secret? "I did, but..." he rubbed the back of his neck. "Someone has made off with it." "Seriously?" she snapped. "How could you be so careless?!" "Keep it down," he urged, glancing into the great hall. He lead her away from the door so no one would overhear. "Isi and Darius are already out looking. We'll get it back." In the kingdom of Drakyn, the prince was busy infiltrating the castle's records. He shifted through all the books and papers until he found what he was looking for, then hastily retreated under the cover of darkness. He returned to his hideout in the forest with his loot; an old tome. He sat inside a small cave lit by a single lantern and dusted off the old book. "Let's hope my Abyssal isn't super rusty," he said as he opened the book, shifting through the pages in search of one specific summoning. He found it towards the end of the book. He did all the necessary preparations of magic and seals and chanting and concentration to summon his little demon buddy. |

Scritch, scritch. A stirring in a field of black - not so much a shadow as the absence of light. At least in this circle. Faintly, a yawn; feminine and drowsy. Scritch She recognized that feeling, the atypical fuzz at the back of her mind that slowly advanced its way through her thoughts, her psyche. Someone was calling out and she was being pulled to answer them. She didn't make it particularly hard to find her name, at least her Summon Name, so it wasn't so much surprising as it was annoying to be interrupted mid-nap. In the long stretch of time since someone else had found her name and drawn her to Meeden, it had to be during a nap that someone finally decided to pull her back? She would consider it a cosmic joke by the Gods if they had the slightest hope of reaching this far into her home plane. That was the peculiar thing about Summoning magic, the workings of runes into the calling of an entity; that it worked rather than fizzling out like a spark fired into an ocean. Instead, she felt the tug on her essence and sighed. No fizzle here, it seemed; and certainly not sloppily done. Even as she pushed and prodded at the calling for a weak verse or mistimed Abyssal triptych, she knew she would find none. The implications if she succeeded were always fun, but this one had watched themselves or gotten lucky. As it was, she allowed the tug to turn into a pull before exerting her will and bringing the whole thing to a full stop for a moment - something that would unsettle a mage, especially if they didn't exactly know what they were summoning. A pause of a few seconds, and then she was in a new place, standing in a softly glowing circle of red, angry looking runic markings along the ground. The circle faded as if snuffed out by her very presence and the single lantern flame guttered and failed as well. From within the circle the man had drawn so carefully hovered a pair of softly glowing, violet eyes. They blinked once, twice, then narrowed at the only other occupant in the room. She could see fine, certainly. Somewhat noble bearing, at least close enough to it where he stood holding an old book (Hey, she'd killed the last one to use that one. Good omen.). Rather a tome, as it was a tiny bit too old to be called just a 'book'. Couple more decades and it might advance into grimoire. Or turn to dust unless a mage got hold of it and layered some protective spells on it. Pica carefully allowed her essence to reassert itself and form into her body, stretching languidly and allowing the bones of her arms and legs to crackle pleasantly as she did so. Remnants of the summoning magic snapping into nothingness; the considerable power required left no small amount of signature, and the wild energy that peeled off from the main working dismantled itself with electric pops. She lowered her self off of her toes and rolled her shoulders, one after the other, and her own considerable magical presence finally asserted itself fully as the summoning ran its course. She snapped her fingers and was covered in obscuring darkness for just a moment. When it dissipated this time, she was wearing a functional set of comfortable pants tucked into a pair of boots, a tunic of rather plain make, and a long, hooded purple-black cloak that draped around her shoulders and kicked up the dust of the cave as it settled. This done and after a brief inspection of herself, she finally looked at the fellow who had summoned her again. Up and down. Once, twice. She flashed a winsome - if fanged - grin and curled her tail up to point in his direction, hands on hips. "Oohh, hullo there. Find a book in your master's old study? " A pause. "Or! Or. Steal it from a merchant who said it would allow you to summon imps to do your bidding? " She remained still for a moment before her eyes flicked to the area around them and she let out a small, disappointed grumble. Light, right. Humans had trouble with the dark . Pica flicked her wrist and a mote of steady, clean light appeared in her right hand, illuminating the cave brightly and showing her cheery expression to the man in full. "So which was it, hmm? " She called again, before moving her hands to begin tying her hair back with a ribbon she produced from a pocket of her cloak. The strip of cloth was thick, brightly colored (and thus expensive in this day and age, much like her solid black clothing) and snaked its own way around her hair to tie itself as the demon unwound it. All in all, Pica was certainly unassuming - until you got a clear look at her horns and noticed her tail, that is. Her demeanor was also off-putting; she seemed cheery, unshaped by suddenly being ripped from her home plane and deposited here at the will of someone with a book and attention to detail. Thundering hooves, the smell of horse sweat, blurs of color. Anger, unquenchable anger. Double doors flew open at his touch, a servant nearly knocked over as he stalked down the hall to his own quarters. The rooms were empty. Where was that blasted girl? "BRYN! ATTEND ME!" He thundered down the hall. Seconds later she appeared and wasn't entirely presentable. He didn't care. "We're leaving." he announced, turning away from her and into his bedroom. "For how long, sir?" "Forever!" he roared as he ripped the emblazoned clasp from his cloak and threw it through the open door way that connected his bedroom and sitting room, shattering a mirror on the far wall. "Take nothing of my father's house!" "As you wish, sir." Bryn answered, bowing away from and setting about her task of packing her master's, and her own, few possessions. The man paced, thinking, fuming, until a rap at the door broke his concentration. "Leave me! I have no words for you!" The door opened, his demand unheeded, his elder sister stood in the hall. A malicious grin spread across his face. "Come to gloat of your inheritance uncontested?" "This is foolishness, brother." She responded coolly, which only served to incite his rage further. "Foolishness?! Foolishness is us slaking our thirst on the blood of our own!" He spat venomously, wagging a finger at the woman. Her eyes narrowed. "So, it is true--" "And you're either for or against me!" He interrupted. "Now, get out of my sight." He woke with a start and nearly threw his pillow in frustration. Remembrance of that day never failed to foul his mood and today was no exception. The inn he was staying in was spared his wrath, however, by the impeccable timing of Bryn who appeared carrying a breakfast tray loaded with cheese, meat, and a bowl of fruit. This she placed in front of her master then sat to wait as he ate in silence, forcing his nightmare out of his mind and focusing on the day. They should arrive at their destination soon and then -- "Sir?" His eyes turned to the girl "May I ask why we have fled so far from the kingdom of Drakyn?" He sighed. "You know my stance on the King's latest decisions, correct?" She nodded. "I was asked to participate in a way that I had no choice but to refuse." Bryn lowered her eyes to the floor solemnly, understanding at once what he meant. Finishing his meal, he stood and went to the window, to peer out at the sleepy little town that was just beginning its day. "Well, let's be off." He said, turning to Bryn who was shyly staring at the ground as she held his garments in her outstretched arms. "Right." He said with an exasperated wave of his arms. "Pants first." Several hours later, the duo arrived at a castle. While Bryn was staring, wide eyed with wonder, at the building so impressive compared to all they'd seen thus far, her master took no notice, seeing only the front doors. They dismounted when they reached them and, handing his horse off to the girl, he rapped loudly on the frame. When they didn't open right away, he stated, loudly, his name and intentions. "My name is Arash, I'm here to speak with the lord of this castle." |

They were still moving through the dense wooded area, not quite at the speed they'd been going when they'd first set out, but she could still see the determined expressions on her friends' faces. They hadn't hardly even spoken, and yet here they were, loyally following her to.... where exactly? Where were they even headed? She looked around. It was definitely cooler. The night had long since dropped the already cold temperatures, she looked down at the egg she had nestled close to her body. It hadn't cracked anymore than the initial few scattered markings and she allowed herself a moment's panic, thinking maybe she just got her friends into terrible trouble over nothing. Maybe this was all for nothing. Maybe this egg was already dead and that was why it didn't look as lustrous as the ones in the stories. It was true, though, to her, it still looked remarkable, like she'd been looking for it or something like it... no, not something like it... she'd definitely been looking for this her entire life. That's how she felt as she looked down at the little lifeless looking egg. As if reading her thoughts, one of the cracks spread and her eyes widened. She smiled. "What happened?" Alameth's question brought her out of her reverie. "It just cracked again." She nearly whispered, hardly daring to speak, lest she scare the creature inside. "On it's own?" Kassia heard her own voice as if it were someone else who was calm and collected when inside she felt cold from fear of what she'd gotten them into. Being found with a dragon in this land meant things worse than just simple death. They all knew this. But Kassia also knew she nor either of her friends would abandon this dragon. "Yea, it's... I think it's hatching. We really need to get away from here. Fast." She heard Kyrenia scoff before she trotted her horse ahead. "I know it's important to make good time, but Alameth's horses aren't exactly suited for long distance riding." She sounded irritated by the statement. "Horse thievery is a serious crime. It was bad enough I had to take one horse." Alameth stated deadpan, looking ahead face serious. Kyrenia pulled her horse to a stop. "So why is it, you're the only one not even riding one of your own horses?" She narrowed her hazel eyes accusingly. "Well, if we were caught, I couldn't very well have one of you lovely ladies being accused of being a horse thief." He spread his hands innocently as he looked slyly down at the beautiful black mare he was astride. Kassia allowed herself one more wistful glance at the egg in her arms before she rolled her eyes at her companions, "Alameth," she said in a voice that wasn't exactly stern but commanded cooperation at the same time. He looked over at her, his smug, joking demeanor changed and he sobered up. With just a look she was able to convey to him how serious she thought this situation was. Though she doubted her friends' crimes could receive worse punishment than assisting a thief who was harboring an illegal dragon egg. Kassia dismounted and my friends followed suit, Kyrenia coming up beside her taking her bay geldings reins. Kassia took the chance while the other two were busy to study the egg more closely. She tried to discern if it had always been the color it was now, or if it had dimmed with time, or if it was sick or other various reasons. It was early dawn by the time they'd settled down they had decided that they would let the horses rest for a few hours before setting off again. Kassia cooked cooked dinner while Alameth who claimed he didn't feel any of the vibrations or scratch-like feelings coming from the egg that Kassia said she could feel whenever she held the egg. Sure enough while she let the stew made from ingredients Kyrenia was resourceful enough to borrow from Lord Liexe's kitchens simmer, she took the egg from Alameth and the vibrations started up again. Kyrenia put her hand on the egg while Kassia was holding it, a small twitch of her lip and her eyes softening showed she felt it. Then suddenly there were no cracks there.... there was one big crack there instead! Kassia's eyes widened as she kept both of her arms around the egg. She heard sounds of exclamations from her friends from was to fixated on what was happening in her arms. A tiny part of the shell lifted then fell back down, she was almost tempted to lift it, but didn't have a free hand to do so. Kassia bit her bottom lip as a little claw finally popped out and pulled the shell aside of the egg and just above the claw, looking directly into her own eyes were the brown-grey eyes of a baby dragon. But as she watched them, they turned a slight shade of green, a mix of gray and green. She didn't get much time to speculate because just then Lord liexe himself and his trusty Tigerlady sidekick Lady Isi walked into our clearing. Kassia had just barely gotten a glance at them before Kyrenia was standing in from of her shielding her from view. Kassia shoved the egg with the dragon in it in the folds of her cloak, she had a nagging feeling in the back of her mind, it felt like an exterior force pressing on her mind that was thinking Be quiet. Be quiet. Over and over. Kassia ignored the strange voice as Alameth's voice murmured above her, "Why, if it isn't our Lord and Savior..." She hoped they hadn't seen the dragon. Who knows, maybe they'd been watching for a while for proof? Maybe they'd just stumbled on them... She steeled herself, ready for anything. Edited by Jennoria, Nov 1 2015, 07:21 PM.

"What if Ove gets it before we do?" Aki growled, irritated that Liexe had let the egg out of his sight so easily. She followed him to the armory, glaring at the back of his head the whole way. "That won't happen," Liexe said sternly, entering the room. The moderate space wasn't heavily stocked; a few swords and pole arms stood on a rack, a few shields rested against the wall, and some bows were laid on a table waiting to be strung. Arrows sat in quivers on the wall, and a handful of daggers were waiting to be sharpened. Liexe sheathed the sharpest sword and belt it around his waist, strung a bow and grabbed a quiver. He turned back to Aki. "I'm going to catch up with Isi and Darius. Keep an eye on things here for me." She huffed, but nodded, knowing that she was next in line in their little pecking order of power. Liexe strode passed her and made his way to the doors. A bird flew in an open window in the hall, landing in front of him as a man with black clothing. "Isi tracked them," Darius informed him as he walked. "They're headed west." "Thank you. I'll catch up to them; you stay here with Aki." Darius gave an obedient nod as they reached the front doors, Liexe pulling one of the large doors open. He was about to step out but stopped when he nearly ran into someone. He blinked, taking in the appearance of the man standing on his door step and the rabbit woman that accompanied him. "Can I help you?" he asked, but didn't give the stranger time to respond before waving his hand and moving passed him. "Sorry, I'm a bit busy right now. Darius, attend this man." He left the strangers to Darius as he raced off to find Isi. "Pardon my master's rudeness; there's an urgent matter he must attend to," Darius said before stepping back to allow the newcomers to enter. "Please, come in and tell me how I can be of service." Liexe ran through the western woods, finding markers that Isi left to guide the way. The limp in his stride hindered him but he moved as fast as he was able. Eventually he caught up to the tigress, slowing his pace and pausing to catch his breath. Isi nodded through the trees towards a clearing where their runaway thieves idled. Liexe gave a small sigh of relief; where they were was relatively safe from outside forces, and there were no signs of anyone else nearby. Still, he would feel much better with them all back home. Composing himself, he stepped through the brush and into the clearing, Isi right behind him. "Do you three have any idea how much danger you could be in?" he asked them sternly, although it was hard for him to hide the relief of finding them before someone else did. He was like a worried parent, really. "I know you have the egg, and I trust you'll give it back and come home. It's not safe for you to run around with it. If any of Drakyn's soldiers catch sight of you, they'll stop at nothing to get that egg." "You haven't gone and broken it, have you?" Isi chimed in. The summoning had been done so carefully that Blade wondered if he was being too careful, possibly overlooking something. But he knew that that second of doubt would be what messed things up, so he worked passed it and continued his Abyssal chants. A language he hadn't used in years, but it came back to him quite easily. He could feel the summon being ignored for some time, but he wouldn't let the sudden stop throw him off. This wasn't his first summing, after all. When the pull was acknowledged again and the light in the cave was snuffed out, he didn't flinch. When the violet eyes glowed and glared at him, he didn't flinch. Instead, a satisfied grin pulled at the corner of his mouth. The darkness of the cave was no bother to him; his silver eyes adjusted instantly. She threw her questions at him and lit the cave. He chuckled. "Neither," he answered. "This tome has been in my library for years. I've used it several times, summoning one servant after another." He idly turned the pages of the book. Many of them had been scratched out, an indication that they were no longer of use to him. He tossed the book aside and stood up, standing a foot taller than the petite demon before him. "So, Jeerek-Wlape, I have a job for you." Edited by Rin, Nov 1 2015, 10:54 PM.

Bleh. He was certainly the confident sort. Not even a bit of hesitation, and she could tell the light was all but redundant after she brought it to life. It dissipated with a soft 'pop' and the demon looked her summoner up and down, properly this time. Young, mostly grown but still with a few years on him. Damned smart if he had summoned other demons in the past, especially at his age. Was that intelligence tempered by cunning, or no? She could feel power, certainly - a wraithlike kin to her own dark magic. Had he made a pact with another demon? Or had he simply manifested it himself? The demon tilted forward a little, sniffing the air and sorting through the distasteful scent of her home plane - scorched stone mostly - and seeking further. Not a human, not even augmented. Too steeped in magic to be a human. She cleared her nose with a sigh and raised her hand to her chin, thinking, and tilting her head back slightly to look up at him when he stood. He wasn't lying either, she thought. Interesting accent, too. Very regal and appropriate for delivering dramatic commands. "People hardly summon me without something they need done." She pointed to the book on the ground where it lay inert (as books usually are), sniffing somewhat disdainfully. "Try not to damage the book, hmm? I go through some pains to make those accessible while I'm trouncing around the middle worlds. I'm not game to wait eons for some idiot to mispronounce his spell mid-sneeze and summon me by accident." A job huh? Not much ceremony there. The directness was appreciated but hardly spoke to how long she would be here. She'd have to prolong it, one way or another. "Assuming you didn't mess up your command seal, what do you want from me?" fShe replied to the last, crossing her arms and looking at her summoner with a mix of curiosity and effected boredom. "Better yet, let's talk outside. Just let me out of the circle." Pica lifted her head and smiled as a stray breeze pushed fresh air into the cave from the entranceway, at ease. Getting out of the circle was a big step - no more bindings could be applied to her until she was compelled or perhaps tricked back into a restricting circle again. So any mistake wouldn't be an easy fix. He would know this; so would his confidence prove secure, or a fatal error? She might be able to cut this 'obligation' short and go about her business.. Still, it picked at her somewhat - what sort of task would this young mage have for her? Curiosity was always a part of it - so she hoped the payoff wouldn't be dreadfully disappointing. Arash stared curiously at the retreating form of the boy who almost ran into him. A dragon? He didn't sense any others but perhaps... A voice broke into his thoughts, he turned to the speaker. Not a dragon. Curious. His gaze returned to the direction the boy had gone, could he be...?, then hesitantly to the building before him as he stepped into the entryway. Hearing and seeing little of the activity that such edifices usually contain, he decided that a different approach than as per usual may be prudent. If he was wrong, he was armed. Addressing the speaker, he reintroduced himself. "My name is Arash. I am a soldier formerly with the South East Division of the Drakyn army. My servant and I seek the Prince of Drakyn, though, immediately, lodgings for the night." Normally he would introduce himself ambiguously, a travelling noble, a woodsman, since he couldn't count on news of his treason remaining in Drakyn but finding another of his kind, who also seemed to be in hiding, was encouraging. If the Prince wasn't here, perhaps the castle's residents would be able to point him in the right direction after a meal and a good night's sleep. Heaven knows the country bumpkins he's run into thus far had no idea so he wouldn't be any worse off if they didn't either. Arash motioned to Bryn to take care of the horses which, with a quick curtsy to the man that welcomed them, she proceeded to do. She led them around back to the stable, tied them in an empty stall, and began to untack them. She much prefered leaving this task to a stable hand but she'd manage. Once all their belongings were neatly packed in a small pile inside the door, she found a curry and began to brush her master's horse. She'd always thought the blood bay mare was a magnificent creature but she'd never dare ride her. She was spirited and loved to cause all kinds of mischief while her own horse, a liver brown appaloosa gelding, was far more relaxed and easy for her to manage. Arash had said more than once that the horse's white rump looked more like his long john's were left unzipped than any proper marking for an animal and threatened to sell the beast to a local farmer and buy her a more comely mount but he never meant it. She laughed at the poor boy who looked at her as if he knew exactly what she was thinking. Once she had finished grooming and bringing the horses feed and water, Bryn returned to the main doors in search of someone to tell her where to put their belongings and, with any luck, help her bring them up. |

Kassia was brought up short and clamped her mouth shut. She'd been prepared to protect the egg from being taken from her, not to protect her actions for taking the egg away. Suddenly she no longer felt like a champion mage protecting the only dragon that could possibly even be left alive, or maybe there were others..... she'd have to speculate on that at a later time, now she felt like a child being chastised for being out too late. At first she did think about just giving back the egg, especially after the look Kyrenia gave her, just out of the idea of getting her friends out of more trouble... but then that voice... the one scratching at the back of her mind seemed to recoil at the thought so strongly Kassia physically took a step backwards. She was saved from having to answer right away because Alameth had piped in, "I wouldn't say SHE broke it..." Kyrenia elbowed him, Kassia shot him a look, but she noticed the look on his face, he was in one of his little trance-like states. It was unpredictable what he'd say in this state. It could really be anything. He got that way sometimes. Kassia walked forward finally taking control of the situation. "Theoretically speaking, IF the egg were to hatch, if that were possible, and there were something in it...." She knew she was rambling, but she was having trouble actually admitting to them the truth of the situation until the voice in the back of her head said Safe She nodded, "What if the egg hatched?" She looked over at her friends' two stunned faces and let the folds of her cloak fall away along with the remains of the stone-like shell to reveal what everyone else had missed. The baby dragon had finished extracting itself from it's confines in the comfort of her arms and the warmth of her cloak. She looked down at the little dragon fondly and met it's dull green eyes and smiled, it's tail moved a fraction of an inch before it moved it's scaly gray-brown body closer to her body. She looked back up at Lord Liexe and Lady Isi. "At least I didn't break it." She managed to joke.

Blade watched the little demon, his cocky grin growing wider as she tried to figure him out. Oh, how he loved to play this game with the demons he summoned; his appearance screamed human, but his knowledge and powers were anything but. He liked to see how long it took them to figure out what he was, but he knew he wouldn't get that long with this one. Not with the job he had for her. "There are many things that I need," he said, picking up the book and brushing it off. "An army, a new pair of boots, the death of my father..." he listed casually. "But what I need you for, is finding someone." He set the book with his other things, then turned to look back at her. Of course she wanted out of the circle, and he would let her go once he knew she would do her job. "Are you familiar with the Great Witch of this land?" he asked. Regardless of her answer, he continued; "A Witch so powerful that she cast a spell -- a curse -- on those with darkness in their hearts. Their bodies were changed and stripped of their power. However, over time they got their powers back, although it was only a fraction of what they once were. But the curse remains on their bodies, and has begun affecting others. No one has seen the Witch in over a century. And that is where you come in; I want you to help me find her." Darius had full attention on Arash the moment he said he was a soldier. His concerns weren't put to rest at the word "formerly", it just made him more curious. What was he doing here? Did he truly leave the army, or was it a ruse? "I wouldn't go saying that to everyone here," he warned. "Many of our residents are victims of Drakyn's army." There was no telling what they would do to a soldier that showed up at their door. One such victim was making her way towards the stairs when she stopped to stare at the men by the doors. Darius' weird aura was nothing new, but the one beside him... "A dragon?!" she exclaimed. Dragons could always recognize each other, even if others didn't. She practically skipped to him, her face lit with joy. "How? Where? What?" She stumbled over her words, babbling over her excitement. With a blush of embarrassment, she cleared her throat and collected herself. "My apologies. It's been a long time since I've met another dragon." Darius chimed in, "Mr. Arash and his companion are fleeing Drakyn. I'm going to show him to a room; perhaps you can prepare a meal for them?" "Of course," Aki nodded and happily made her way to the kitchen. Darius led the way up the stairs, stopping a boy they passed in the hall and instructing him to go downstairs to assist with luggage. He brought Arash to a room at the end of the hall. Furnished with only a bed, chair, and small table, it wasn't much. But, it was something. He motioned for Arash to make himself comfortable and closed the door. "You're looking for the Prince," he started. He thought for a moment, weighing his options. A soldier from the South East Division... "I used to work for the Prince," he admitted. "He spoke highly of your Division. I've been looking for him, as well, but it seems he's always a few steps ahead of me." Liexe eyed the three curiously, wondering what they were up to. When Kassia stepped forward, a look of disbelief hit him and Isi. Finding the egg was hard enough, but it hatching wasn't expected. Of course they had hoped for it, but... When the cloak was moved, Liexe couldn't contain a gasp as his eyes met those of the little dragon. Isi, too, was surprised. When Liexe made no indication of moving, she stepped forward. "It needs to be brought back to the castle--" "Isi." His tone of voice made her stop, look at him, and back up. Liexe stepped forward to look at the baby dragon in Kassia's arms. "Amazing," he said, lifting a hand to to stroke the dragon's cheek with his finger. "The whole time I carried that egg, I didn't feel any beat of life inside of it. Kassia, for whatever reason, it reacted to you." |

Resident Demon House Plant

"Oh, so that's what you are. Yes, I know of her." Pica said, triumphant; a dragon summoning a demon, and a fair young dragon at that. What else would have any real interest in the Witch, or at least enough to summon a demon to hunt her? Hardly - she could identify the accent now too, with a bit of digging through her considerable memory to place the tones. When he outlined his full request, she nodded her head once, twice, then grinned. "I should be able to find her - though it is entirely possible she left this plane after her spell to avoid just such a thing as this, which complicates the task. " Her last statement was said in a musing tone, her mind (quick and sharp, despite how she might portray herself) turning over the work with no small amount of curiosity and crowing victory. This would take a long time. Plenty of time to do a lot of 'activities'. Like enthusiastic walks through the woods! For a moment she was distracted by the possibilities, eyes growing distant. Pica snapped back to reality after a moment and narrowed her eyes. "I won't fight her though, not without being fed." A simple statement, and not one she dwelt on for long. She didn't really want to test her limits against something that could influence an entire race - not without amassing a similar amount of power, perhaps. Though the possibility was exciting, certainly - as would simply talking to the woman, as she likely had an impressive breadth of knowledge. The little demon then directed her look at the circle again, distastefully lifting her hand. She flicked the wall the circle provided between her and the outside world with her finger and the surface rippled once before cracking slightly under the pressure she exerted on it. Perhaps she could unsettle him yet, she mused. "So? The circle? Lemme out? Preeeetty please?" She lifted her voice and clasped her hands, directing a winsome smile up at her summoner and widening her eyes, all hopeful innocence. |

"I'm no friend of the army, I assure you. Your men are safe." He said with a sly grin but was spared further comment by the appearance of a female dragon. He visibly stiffened as she bounced around him, assaulting him with questions. He wasn't used to such informality in the most casual of situations and especially not from one of his own race. He was relieved that her excitement was directed elsewhere and more than a little confused as to why a dragon would be part of the kitchen staff. Things really were different out in the boonies, weren't they? Arash followed his host to the room, content with the meager furnishings since, at this point, he just wanted to eat and sleep and any bed was better than none. He couldn't help but laugh as Darius finished speaking. "Not too highly, I hope.". Once the man had left, he removed his cloak, flopped himself down on the bed and listened for Bryn's lilting voice to descend the hall. After a moment or two he heard her and a male voice, presumably another servant assisting with the luggage, and she quickly appeared in the doorway. Bryn set the bags down in an out of the way corner and motioned for the boy to do the same as she explained to Arash that the horses were settled but there didn't seem to be a proper stable hand so she would go back down before bed and care for them again. He nodded as he began disarming himself, removing his belt, which held a pistol on each hip, a pouch of ammo for each, and a dagger, and setting it on the table. Then, using the chair as a stool, he pulled a knife from his right boot before he noticed the boy still standing in the doorway, staring at him in wonder. He frowned and gave him a dismissive wave and Bryn shooed him out the door, following close behind. "That guy is armed to the teeth!" The boy exclaimed, straining to catch another glimpse through the closing door. Bryn only smiled, thanked him for his help with the baggage, and asked him to show her the way to the kitchens. He obliged and just in time, it would seem, for Bryn to be of some help. "Hello! My name is Bryn. Is there anything I can do?" |

Kassia looked down at the little dragon again as Lord Liexe stroked it's scaled cheeks and it seemed to react friendly towards him. She looked back up at him, replaying his words through her mind. He'd been the one who had found the egg and brought it back, what had been his intentions for it. "What do you want with it?" She looked up at him, her eyes narrowed a little, not angrily, just skeptically, she still felt the need to protect the little winged reptile. The dragon snorted suddenly and looked up at her as if knowing she'd called it that in her thoughts. She raised an eyebrow curiously at the dragon before turning her attention back to Lord Liexe. "No experiments? You sound like you want to protect it, but for what purposes? Do you have your own reasons for wanting it? Like raising it to be some sort of war machine against the King?" Kassia realized her voice had risen and quickly hushed herself, seeing the looks on everyone's faces. Both Lord Liexe and Lady Isi looked appalled at the accusations and Kassia immediately felt better, elated even, she knew now that they were really just trying, like here, to protect it. She still didn't understand why, but their wanting to protect it was good enough for her. Before they even answered, she asked the question she'd been dying to ask, "Are there more? Dragons I mean. Are there more dragons out there? I thought the witch of this land had destroyed them all... Most of the dragons fled my land when I was younger, before I was brought here..." Kassia sighed, thinking of the old tales, about how dragons were full of magic, how they were powerful and majestic. Surely they would be strong enough to help the suppressed people of this land and hers, yet the ones of her land were chased away by the necromancers, and the ones here were defeated by a mere witch... "Ouch!" She pulled her left hand away quickly where her two fore fingers were bleeding a little from a fresh bite. She looked accusingly at the dragon who looked unflinchingly back up at her. She narrowed her eyes at it. We will. Kassia tilted her head. Kyrenia jumped in just then too, "I've also been wondering how you were able to catch up to us so fast without horses." "Which I did not mean to steal one of yours, I swear! I was just borrowing it!! I promise, I would've brought it back Lord Liexe! Really!" Alameth hit the ground so hard Kassia heard a thump and his face was actually pressed to the earth. She shook her head. "I suppose we have time for a bit of an explanation... and a rest." Lord Liexe said, Kassia thought she heard him say something to Lady Isi, but wasn't sure, but turned towards Kyrenia. Kyrenia offered a small smile, but looked tentatively at Kassia's bleeding fingers mid-reach towards the baby dragon, withdrew her hand and walked away saying something about getting more fire wood. Kassia took the stew off the dying fire and added a few more pieces of wood to the fire from the small pile of wood as Alameth sat down beside her. Kyrenia was back within minutes and sat down on her other side. They all looked over at Lord Liexe and Lady Isi like scolded children, but scolded children who were still curious. Still troublemakers at heart. |

A satisfied grin, Blade was pleased that the little demon agreed to help him with little protest. Having another set of hands would, hopefully, make his quest easier. If nothing else, he'd be able to multitask a bit more and broaden his search for a handful of other people. He snapped his attention back to her. He watched her flick the circle, causing ripples and cracks in the magic. Lesser individuals would definitely flinch, but he only gave her an amused snort. Quite confident in his own power, wasn't he? Releasing the magic that bound her, he then turned and gathered the tome, lantern, and burlap sack that lay on the ground - and promptly shoved everything into it. He closed it and swung the light load over his shoulder, stepping out of the cave. "Come on - there's a cabin not far from here." He led the way through the forest, the cool night air hanging on the trees and underbrush. The clear sky allowed the moonlight to peak through patches of the woods, lighting the old game trails that Blade followed. He introduced himself on the way; Blade Lanteer, Prince of Drakyn. His tone of voice obviously demanded respect. What else would anyone expect from dragon royalty? It wasn't long before they came to a cabin nestled in a small clearing. He stepped inside, depositing his load onto the small kitchen table. "Help yourself to the food," he said, motioning to a single weaved basket on the counter. It was half full of dried meats, a couple round loaves of bread, and a handful of fruits. Not exactly a feast, and probably less than expected from someone with the amount of wealth he had, but at least there was food. He disappeared into the single bedroom, returning moments later. "I want your primary focus to be the With," he said as he placed a few items on the table. He didn't bother with lights because he knew they could both see fine. "However, there are a few others I'm looking for." He held up a glass bead the size of a marble. Magic swirled inside of it; a weird, shifting element that was hard to read. "This is magic from one of my servants. He's a shape shifter, which makes him difficult to track, but there is a consistency in his magic. Study it," he handed her the marble. Next, he held up a necklace. A tree intricately carved from wood hung from a leather cord, small holes scattered along the branches; perhaps to hold gems. "I need to find the owner of this, but it's... difficult," he admitted, a puzzled look on his face as he studied the necklace. "It belonged to an earth dragon. Unfortunately, because their magic is so deeply connected with the planet, it's very difficult to track one specific dragon. The workings of earth magic isn't my forte, so I can't pinpoint the exact string of magic this necklace holds." Rare for him to admit his shortcomings; he must really want to find this dragon. Setting the necklace down, he held up the final object. Unfolding a cloth, he showed her a thick piece of eggshell roughly the size of his palm. Almost white and etched with gold markings, it was preserved with magic. "I need to find what hatched out of this," he said. "Light dragons have been slaughtered throughout the world, but I have reason to believe that there's still one out there. I need to find them." Arash assured that he was not a part of Drakyn's army, but that didn't settle Darius' nerves. He descended a floor and went to his office, sitting on the floor to meditate on the situation. Arash and his companion would need to be monitored until he was sure of the man's intentions. Liexe and Isi would need to be informed. And he needed to find his master soon. Curse the Witch's magic; it's run a muck on this land and now tracking someone's magic was harder than it should be. Of course, he was confident that his master would find him first. Aki was in the middle of kneading dough, looking up when another entered the kitchen. "Oh, hello," she said with a welcoming smile. "Did you come here with...?" She paused. "I'm sorry. I realize I didn't catch his name." Chuckling, she went back to working the dough. "My name's Aki. Can you check that fire?" she asked, motioning to the brick oven at the end of the room. Liexe's eyes moved up to look at Kassia as she spoke. He was offended that she would speak to him that way; not because of her tone of voice, but that she would think he would do something like that. He opened his mouth to speak, but closed it when she asked about dragons. He took a deep breath and exhaled it slowly. He glanced at Isi; she gave him a warning look. He lightly shook his head and turned his attention back to the three before him. "Alright," he took a seat in front of them, "for starters, don't worry about the horses." "Liexe..." Isi warned. She remained standing, arms crossed, glaring down at Liexe. But behind that glare was worry. Liexe looked up at her. "This egg hatched because of them. They deserve to know." Isi grumbled, but Liexe ignored it and went on to explain. "It's true that the witch destroyed the dragons, but not in a way that killed them. This world used to be at peace. There were no borders or kingdoms that divided anyone. But, darkness found its way in, and wars scarred the lands and divided everyone. The Great Witch - some call her a savior - she cast a spell that targeted the darkness in creatures' hearts. It morphed them into human bodies. She thought that without their claws and fangs, they'd be less of a threat. But their magic still hurt people, so she took that away from them, too. It's been several centuries since the witch was seen, and those that were changed by her magic have found ways to break her spell just enough for them to use their magic again. Although, they still have human bodies, and a dragon hatching from an egg is unheard of. I am a dragon. A light dragon. I hatched from an egg; four legs, tail, wings and all. I was changed by the witch's spell, and I've somehow managed to avoid Drakyn's army." He paused, letting that information sink in before continuing. "Darius came across information about a dragon egg. When he told me, I had to go find it. I needed to bring it back here so it would be safe from Ove's army. I didn't know if it would hatch or not, but if it did, I wanted to give it its best chance for survival." He focused his attention on Kassia. "I'm going to entrust you with the care of this dragon, if you feel you're up for the task. Had it not been for you, I don't think it would have hatched." |
