Character Creation and Growth Primer

Unlike most roleplays, Outer Heaven hardly has any regulation when it comes to character creation or growth. With some exceptions, it's mostly left up to the roleplayers to do both. This system of trust allows it easier to go into roleplays and gives the staff time to focus on providing interesting and fun story hooks. There is no restriction as to who you can and can't play. Video games, anime, western television and cartoons, books, original characters, webcomics, wrestling personas, there's no limits. The only limit of who you can play is who's willing to play with you. Don't expect anyone to play a long if you play a character based entirely around a meme, or play an original character that falls into Mary Sue territory.

Characters retain all of their abilities and knowledge from whatever point you pluck them out of their stories, assuming they're not locals of Outer Heaven itself. Any nerfs to a characters abilities are made by player choice.

Claiming, Switching and Forbidden Characters

Claiming a character is as simple as filling out the basic info for them and posting in the character storage section, as there is no process of scrutiny. While theoretically the number of characters you can play are infinite, it is suggested to be considerate and realistic with the amount of characters you think you can handle. All disputes are held in a case-by-case basis, but there are some general expectations when picking a character.

  • If one or more people are also interesting in playing a character you have your eyes on, discuss it or seek a compromise instead of sneakily trying to be the first to whip out and app.
  • Characters from even non-localized media are fine, but if there's a reasonable expectation of an English localization of a product with enough buzz around it, it is expected for individuals to wait until the localization hits.
  • Adding onto the previous idea, it's highly expected one actually has consumed the media your character is from to 'completion' before picking the character up. Any Day 1 release forms will be met with expected suspicion.
  • Alternate versions of characters can't be allowed unless permission of the other individual with the same character is given. If you wish to contest this, contact staff so they may touch base as a third party in this dispute. The exception to this rule is if the character in question is likely a much different person than the other potential protagonist in question. (Examples include Paragon and Renegade Shepard from Mass Effect, the female and male protagonists of Persona 3 Portable, or a Courier who got the Mr. House ending as opposed to the NCR ending in Fallout: New Vegas.)
  • Playing a follower someone has can be a touchy subject that will be handled on a case-by-case basis. It is expected for a discussion to be had between the two parties involved to work it out, otherwise the staff will intervene as a third party to hash out a compromise. This can often be avoided by simply not picking up followers that might be attractive as full-fledged PC to others, or by not branching your companion pool to wide in terms of both size and the number of series involved.
  • No New Valorians.
  • For the love of God don't play memes.
  • Fictionalized versions of real life people is fine.

Switching and Retiring

Switching a character is putting them to rest in order to find something more appealing towards the roleplayers style or preferences. Without a strict character limit or application process, switching might be a bit more rare than on other sights but still a possibility. Switching can also come as a result of character death or other circumstances resulting in a character being indisposed for an extensive period of time or potentially forever, relegating them to role of an NPC or out of the RP forever. While somewhat harmless, just like not claiming a bunch of characters one does not switch too often for the sake of ensuring you do not waste yours and other roleplayers time.

It's worth noting that retiring a character can often result in a character becoming forbidden.

Forbidden Characters

Forbidden characters are the result of characters being permanently retired, relegated to an NPC role or having undergone a character death. These characters often have had such a notable impact across the boards lore that someone else or new playing these characters can result in many complications in both RP and out of character. Alternate versions of characters of characters are possible, despite this. It also goes without saying any character being actively played by someone can be considered 'forbidden.'

As of right now, there are no characters that fall under this category.

Character Form

The character form exists to provide both information to others unfamiliar with your character and to allow roleplayers to analyze and come up with ways to describe facets of their character. While you can start RPing immediately after posting, it's generally a good idea to have someone look over your form. While it will likely never be the case, if it is found a form has been made from copy-pasting information from sources like wikis, contain factually wrong information, or just generally end up too much of a mess, a staff member may step in and investigate the reasons why and may potentially put on hold or stop any attempts to use the character.

All-in-all, it's best to put one's best foot forward when filling the form. All forms will be posted in the Character Archives.

Character Form

These forms are often the baseline of your character and will likely never need to be edited. Any changes done during RP are recommended to be remarked upon in the Character Sheet proper described in the character growth section. The form itself is mostly just a means of showing a grasp of ones character, as well as a way to look back on all the changes and developments one has accomplished during the course of their RP. Feel free to also copy paste parts of you form into the Character Sheet proper when starting out.
