Whilst I understand this topic is a tad late for those in the Americas, PAL regions and Japan have recently celebrated one whole year of Wii. Given talk on other forums about it, I am interested in hearing your thoughts on the console itself after one year. What were your expectations for the system? Were they met or not? Has there been anything you've been particularly disappointed and annoyed about? What are you looking forward to in the future? Share your insights here. :)

*Copy Pasted from another forum. Some points are based on current conditions in PAL regions*

"For the first year, the Wii has done very well so far, and continues to show a lot of promise and potential for the future to come. Whilst there have been plenty of hit and misses from both Nintendo and other developers, there have been some very serious attempts to utilise the new functionalities granted by the console's controller and the console itself, which have only gotten better from launch.

Aside from the rather unnecessary game drought here in the first half of the year, there has been enough gaming to go around and keep me entertained. The Virtual Console gets most credit here, with many true classic titles being released this year, such as Lylat Wars, Super Metroid, Punch Out!, A Link to the Past, 4 Major Super Mario AND Sonic titles, as well as the Hanabi Festival bringing some gems that never made it out of Japan. 2 of the Big Three Wii titles have been released, both of which are of excellent gaming quality along with a few decent titles here and there to keep new content coming. Heck, Strikers lasted 4 months before it was removed from the Disk Slot! o_O

The Wii has also had a tremendous turn around in market perception as well, being a total smash hit with the more casual gaming crowd, and causing doubtful retailers to eat their words when they thought the system wouldn't sell well. It has set new records in many parts of the world hardware sales wise and has caused Nintendo to regain mainstream acceptance, a point that would make many veterans of the Gamecube era feel a tinge of warm fuzziness. With more great titles coming down the track for, quite literally, everyone, there are no signs of its success slowing down in the immediate future.

There have been a few slip ups though, mostly notably the continued neglect of PAL vs. NTSC game releases; a scar many loyal users haven't forgotten after the initial hope of a region free console. This also continues to various Virtual Console issues as well, from old school 50Hz/boarders, to the lousy Component Cable issues and lack of updated functionality. Plus, there are matters of storage, user functionality and online infrastructure that have left some dumbfounded, but no one is perfect and things do seem to be on the hopeful signs of improvement. Of course, "core" issues aren't the only thing here; lets not forget the massive media bashing the Wii received in terms of broken TVs and windows, Wii-elbow health concerns and constant bickering that the Wii was nothing more than a "fad" that wasn't worth supporting. Although not Nintendo's fault fully, some of their decisions, or lack of foresight, did contribute to these matters, and certainly caused some controversy in the industry.

Overall, it has been a rather solid performance from the Wii, with much more in store in the year ahead, and support gaining ever more steam across the globe. Investing in the Wii has not been a disappointment, and has brought a LOT of fun and entertainment. :)"

Peachy cosplayer!
Hehehe, my mate was the first person in the UK to get one after camping for 3-4 days outside HMV in Oxford Street, and he got it free because of that XD

Personally I think Nintendo are doing extremely well, they've taken a whole new route, and its really paid well for them, games where there's little restriction, and a range of fun, as you can game while moving around, no wire limitations! Its fantastic that even after a year they're still on a roll, and DS's are evermore popular as well, Nintendo are going from strength to strength. When WiiFit comes out as well, I can see more people getting Wiis again - cheaper than gym fees!

One year on, I think the Wii is doing brilliant. This is Nintendo's generation, with both the Wii and DS changing how games are played, and who plays them, forever. Who would have thought that highly Japanese concepts such as Brain Training would remain as popular in the charts as they have? Also, as a person with an unnatural loathing of sports and sport games, it's quite an achievement that Nintendo have won me over, and no doubt countless others alike, with Wii Golf.

Nintendo's lifestyle approach to its advertising and its simplicity in control schemes have put Wii Remotes in everyone's hands, people who you would never have expected to play games normally. Nintendo's dream has always been to create a 'family console', that is, a console that the family can play together, and also one that each member can enjoy individually too. With the Wii, Nintendo have finally and truly accomplished it.

Because of the wide range of titles, there really is something for everyone. My only gripe is the lack of hardcore titles. Twilight Princess, Mario Galaxy and Metroid Prime 3 are brilliant, but we need more classic Nintendo franchises to keep the hardcore fans happy.

The wii is just becoming great, i saw in another forum a topic about Iwatta (i think) saying the Wii would be more comfortable to use over the years. The downloading softwares methods is great, they've done a great work with it, he also said something about stopping making consoles each 5 years, well, that's great because we'll have so much more time to enjoy our wii, in 5 years, what can the wii become with all the crazy and cool updates?
