Chapter 1: How To Upset a Land Lord Mario sighed warily, staring at the animal through the bars. “Mama Mia, Mario, we can’t possibly keep this thing here. I’m pretty sure this would violate our rent agreement…” Luigi mumbled. He was past wary and nearing full-on fright. “I’m sure it does,” Mario agreed. “But we can’t just release this thing onto New York City, either.” “Well…” Luigi shifted uncomfortably. “Isn’t there someone we can call? The zoo maybe?” Mario shook his head. “If the county zoo comes to our apartment, we’re out of here for sure. I guess we honestly have to keep him as a pet,” Mario answered, thinking back ten minutes when a distressed man in a trench coat delivered an enormous, moving package they hadn’t ordered from a pet store in South America. “He’s a wild animal!” Luigi exclaimed with some fear. “We can’t keep him a secret for—“ Luigi began, but was cut off by a sharp knock at the door. Mario looked up at his younger (but taller) brother quizzically. “Do you think that’s the land lord?” Luigi glanced down at Mario, frightened by the prospect, before turning to the door to answer alongside his brother. Tentatively, Mario reached out a hand and pulled it open to find… “Pauline,” Mario exhaled, then smiled as the woman before him bent down to kiss his face. “Of course—who were you expecting?” she asked, then before the brothers could protest, she strode casually into their apartment. Pauline, so the woman was named, was slender and beautiful. At present, she wore a pink gown and heavy makeup, with her deep auburn hair laying loose behind her shoulders: typical Pauline. Soft, light blue eyes scanned the room and for the first time since Mario had introduced them, Luigi could see what his brother saw in Pauline. She wasn’t particularly interesting, but she had a sort of care-free attitude, and that seemed to be what Mario liked in a woman. Even now, in the face of a two-ton gorilla she seemed undaunted. Or perhaps she hadn’t yet noticed. “Oh my God!” Pauline gasped, clapping a hand over her mouth. “What is THAT!?” Luigi sighed. Of course, no one could possibly retain their composure at the sight of this beast in such a tiny apartment. Surely their landlord would appear any moment now. “It’s a little hard to explain,” Mario answered, rubbing the back of his neck so that his hat shifted around atop his head. “He was just delivered to us and shoved in… I’m not really sure how they fit him through the door.” Pauline glanced between Mario and Luigi in shock. For several moments she was unable to utter anything. Then, finally, she managed to push out some words. “You can’t keep him here!” “Mama mia, you sound like Luigi,” Mario teased Pauline. “Unfortunately, unless we can think of a way to get him out of here undetected, we’re stuck.” Luigi nodded his agreement, but stayed quiet. It was always like Mario to be joking and teasing in a light-hearted way that put everyone at ease. Even in the presence of this enormous two–ton ape, both he and Pauline could relax a little all because of Mario’s tone. Once upon a time, Luigi would have spent waking hours wondering how he did it—but tonight he was just relieved. “Well, I brought a movie,” Pauline smiled. She set her parasol and her purse down, producing a DVD from the oversized bag. “Watch it with me?” she asked. *** “I guess work was rough,” Mario commented as he watched Pauline sleep on the couch. It wasn’t as if Pauline hadn’t stayed over before, just… not while Luigi was around. “She seems really tired,” Luigi agreed. “Maybe we should let her stay here.” Mario nodded his agreement. “I’m sure she’d rather we not disturb her. She doesn’t rest enough as it is.” He went to a closet to pull a blanket from the top shelf. Knowing well enough Mario wouldn’t be able to reach it, Luigi approached him from behind to snatch it before Mario could frustrate himself trying. Mario grinned his thanks. It was no secret that he was close with his brother, and no speaking was necessary—just as Luigi didn’t need to be told that Mario needed help. He then took the blanket to Pauline on the couch and covered her with it carefully. Mario had made a promise to himself to always be chivalrous. Growing up poor had exposed him to enough underappreciated women to know that he never wanted to be the cause of such. Pauline moved quietly in her sleep, but did not stir. Luigi nodded. “Well, mission accomplished,” he declared, turning to move toward their own room. “She looks so peaceful.” Mario followed, and as the door was shut, he turned to Luigi with a serious expression. “Why don’t you like Pauline?” “What?” Luigi asked, startled. “Don’t play dumb,” Mario advised gently. “I can see it in your face when you look at her.” Luigi looked at the floor, feeling like a guilty child. He was caught and there was no way out of it. “It’s not that I don’t like her, Mario, honestly! It’s that… sometimes I wonder why you like her.” This puzzled Mario a little bit, but he was not angry. “Explain?” Luigi turned his gaze back to Mario, the only person he ever looked in the face while he was speaking with, and struggled to explain a far-reaching concept he himself didn’t fully understand. “Well, she’s nice, Mario. And she’s light-hearted, like you. I can see why you get along, but she’s so… ordinary, I don’t know why you…” “Why I love her?” Mario asked. Luigi continued to stare down Mario’s eyes. “Do you?” A scream in the living room cut the two off. *** As soon as the boys left Pauline to herself, she jumped up from the couch, smiling at the blanket that slid off of her form. Mario and Luigi, probably the sweetest men in the world. But she hadn’t faked slumber so she could ponder over chivalry, no. She’d faked slumber so she could solve their problems. Without making a sound, she picked up her parasol and purse, then strode toward the cage withholding the giant monkey. “We’re going to go on a little walk,” she whispered, taking the key off of a near-by table. She unlocked the heavy iron door, and was just about to open the cage herself when the ape jammed it open himself, hitting her in the chest. She fell backward with a short scream until the wind was knocked from her as she hit the ground, but otherwise she was unhurt. Mario and Luigi rushed into the room just in time to see the powerful animal lift Pauline in a meaty hand, then dash straight for the window. *** Meanwhile, an entire world apart from New York City was mushroom kingdom, where a beautiful blonde had problems of her own. Once sitting calmly in her study, learning the languages of near-by kingdoms, she now was held captive in a firey dungeon with no hope of ever escaping. What would her subjects do without her? Speculated the young princess, tears staining her perfect, white cheeks. Was King Koopa, this horrible madman, serious about taking over? Powerless and alone, she willed herself not to think about it. Someone would come and save her, surely! |

Pardon me for being blunt, but what is the matter with you? You always bump old topics to say something similar to what's already been said. Look at the date. LOOK AT THE DATE. This story was posted approx. 3 yrs. ago. Do you really think it'll be continued? Just don't bump topics anymore, okay? It's getting old. ;-) |

Well excuse me then. I did not know that I was not allowed to tell say that this story was good. The last time I checked, you were not a moderator, so please do not tell me what to do. That would be appreciated.
