That's What Friend's Are For

Told in Peach's point of view

~~~~~~~
I remember when I first met Daisy. Mario had saved her from that dreaded Tatanga in Sarasaland and brought her to the Mushroom Kingdom. She had long hair deep brown hair at that time and a crisp smile. I must admit, when we first met, we started out as more of rivals than good friends. Eventually, we warmed up to each other and became best friends. She had cut her hair to short shoulder-length hairstyle that I must say, is suited to her personality more. We played tennis together and rode karts together and played baseball together! She started staying more and more in the Mushroom Kingdom. Finally, I made a room just for her. Orange with flowers. She loved it.
After a year, we were practically sisters. Daisy had recently developed a crush on Luigi, which I found absoulutly cute. Well, one day, I invited Daisy, Mario, and Luigi for a dinner at my castle. The castle's cooking team and I cooked up cake, soup, pasta, cookies, tea, and all sorts of meals from all over the Mushroom Kingdom! The dinner party was off to a good start and we were talking and chatting about this and that. Then a mail toad came in.
"Sorry if I am interupting," he nervously said. "But I have a letter for Princess Daisy."
He walked over to where she was sitting and handed her a envelope that was colored orange with flowers. After the mail toad left, she neatly cut open the envelope and started reading the letter. I thought it was good news, as it was colorful, but soon Daisy's smile disappeared. As she read down farther down the page, the corners of her mouth drooped further. When she was done, the happiness and energy inside of her was gone and her eyes were brimming with tears. She stared at the letter, reading a line on it over and over again. We sat there in silence, waiting for her to say something.
Then suddenly, Daisy pushed back her chair and stood up. All eyes were on her. She quickly rushed up the stairs and to her room. Mario, Luigi and I didn't know what to say. Luigi opened his mouth to say something, and that was when Daisy appeared again at the bottom of the stairs, a suitcase filled with various items in one of her gloved hands. The front of her orange dress was splattered with dark wet polka dots and her eyes were puffy and red.
"Daisy...?" Luigi asked, but he got no response from Daisy.
She rushed to the front door, and the three of us got up and followed her. We found her opening the door and walking outside into the night. Before she walked off, she turned around. Streams of tears cascaded down her cheeks.
"I'm...sorry..." she sobbed, and ran off into the night, leaving us confused.
Mario and Luigi decided to go home, leaving me alone in the dark foyer. What was wrong with Daisy? What had happened. Slowly, I closed the door, cleaned up the mess, and went to bed. For almost a week, a depressing fog had densed my mood. I kept thinking about Daisy and how she had just left me...no, us hanging. Those tears and her eyes...I wished I got the chance to ask her. It was a rainy day, the week almost over, when she finally came back.
I was sitting on my bed, watching raindrops splatter on my heart-shaped window. Daisy was on my mind again. Then, the doorbell chimed. "I'll get it." I flatly answered to a toad about to reach for the knob. Who could that be out there in this weather? There was only one way to find out.
"...Daisy?" I said once I had opened the door. There she was, in a thin raincoat holding the same suitcase. She was soaking wet, but something other than raindrops were on her face. "P-Please! Come in! I'll fix you some warm soup." I quickly stammered. Daisy simply walked in and headed for the dining room.
I quickly went and got some soup from the fridge and warmed it up. Once it was hot, I scurried into the dining room. Daisy was sitting there, head down and shivering. I placed the bowl under her and gave her the spoon. "Please, eat up. It will warm you." I said to her. She nodded, and quietly sipped her soup. I dared not mention the incident before.
After a few silent moments, she finally looked up at me. It was those same blue eyes. Red and wet, but they were Daisy's.
"Peach..." She whispered. Then with a sniffle, she began to spoke. "I'm sorry about what happened a couple of days ago. It's just that..." She paused for a minute, then continued. "...my father passed away." My eyes became wide in shock and I put a hand over my mouth. She started again. "The letter was from one of his servents. He said he was fighting a strange cancer and in the middle of the night, his heart stopped. The castle crew tried their best to revive him, but he wouldn't come back. So I went to..." She didn't finish the sentence. She put her face in her hands. I put my arms around her and hugged her. I felt my own share of tears fall from my eyes. After a few minutes, she spoke again. Her voice was weak and drenched with sobs. "I-I wasn't even there. My own f-father died without me. I didn't see him and I missed him. H-How could I? M-My father...I should have stayed back in Sarasaland."
I whispered in her ear. "It's okay. I understand." It was all I could say. Daisy wiped her eyes with an orange tissue. "Thank you for understanding, Peach."
I smiled for the first time in days. "That's what friends are for."
