Mario slowly approached the bridge. He caught sight of Bowser. You know, defeating this guy seems pretty easy, he thought. Though it was really freaking hot due to all the lava. Then Bowser shot a fireball at him. Oh. Mario fanned himself briefly, then jumped right on over Bowser and grabbed the switch that let down the bridge into the lava. He watched as Bowser fell straight into the fiery pit. “That actually was kind of easy,” he muttered to himself, then jogged down the steps. He half expected a Toad shouting “OUR PRINCESS IS IN ANOTHER CASTLE”. He didn’t even know what this princess looked like. Probably just like her people, pudgy with a big old mushroom cap. And a dress. What he saw was totally different. The girl sitting there, crying, had no mushroom hat. It was replaced by a long, thick wave of dark blonde hair. She wasn’t fat, wasn’t thin. Her dress was several different shades of pink. A crown was on top of her head, sparkling. Mario stared. He hoped this was the princess he was going to be rescuing, and not just a Toad substitute. He slowly walked up to her and tapped her. The girl jumped and flipped around, and Mario got a good look at her face. Though frightened, it was gorgeous – she had baby blue eyes and bright pink lips. She had a heart-shaped set of bangs in the middle of her forehead. “Are you the princess?” He squeaked. The girl didn’t reply for a minute, but her face slowly relaxed. She stared up at him, sitting down flatly instead of in a tense half-pose. “Yes, I am. Who are you?” “I’m Mario… I’m here to rescue you.” He said. That sounded so weird when he said it out loud. The princess stared, then smiled and jumped up. “Oh, thank you!” She clasped her hands together, staring at him lovingly. He blushed. “You can’t imagine how afraid I was!” Mario continued to gaze at her. She was really pretty. She flicked her long hair out of her face. “I’m Princess Toadstool.” She held a piece of dress in her hand, twisting it. Mario nodded. “They never told me your name… they just begged me to rescue you.” Princess Toadstool grinned. “Ah, my people. Such sweethearts!” Princess glanced around. “Let’s get out of here.” ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Mario didn’t want to leave when they reached the castle. But he didn’t have to, because the princess oh-so-sweetly invited him in. She told her guards and help that he was a special guest and to please “put him in the tea room while I wash this Bowser stink off me!” The tea room was pretty big. It had a deep ceiling like a cylinder, and the walls and floors had decorations and paintings all over. Mario wondered if there was going to be food. He hadn’t had anything but mushrooms in days. Princess Toadstool walked in just then, balancing a tray of tea in one hand and a basket of great-smelling biscuits in another. She placed them down, then sat with him. “You are a true hero, you know,” she smiled at him. He blushed again. “No, I’m just a nice guy,” Mario said lightly. “You’re my hero,” Toadstool said, smiling. She leaned over and kissed his cheek. Okay, it wasn’t his lips, but who cared?! Mario swooned. Toadstool twisted her thick hair off her head. “It’s quite hot, huh?” She fanned herself. Mario had a feeling he wasn’t hot like she was. Princess Toadstool sipped casually at her tea, and nibbled a biscuit. “Mmm, I’m hungry.” “I bet,” Mario said. “Did he feed you?” She paused. “He made really bad meat loaf.” “I think meat loaf is bad in general.” She laughed. “You’ve never had royal meat loaf. They make it taste like a hamburger – and a gourmet one, too.” “That sounds nice,” Mario said tiredly. Princess Toadstool detected his tiredness and smiled softly at him. “I suppose you’re tired,” the princess said loosely. “You can go home if you like.” “Okay,” Mario said. He was a little disappointed. He really liked the princess. “Thank you, Princess Toadstool.” He got up and bowed. “Please,” the princess grinned. “Call me Peach.” “Peach,” he muttered to himself, leaving. |
