Global Gay Laws
Spoiler: click to toggle
The world is a much divided place when it comes to how they should treat homosexuality. There are countries that look down upon it and even can go as far as to have the death penalty, while others see it as more than a choice or a mistake and accept those different from the norm. Even within America there is division amongst states and even counties and cities. Only six states have adopted either gay marriage or civil unions. California and Massachusetts for marriage and Connecticut, New Jersey, New Hampshire and Vermont allow civil unions. On the other hand, twenty-six states have a ban on homosexual marriage or unions. Other countries with similar governments such as Canada and the UK have legalized same-sex marriage and unions bringing question to the overlaying current US law defining marriage between a man and a woman. In stark contrast to these cases, other countries such as Iran have put a strict ban on any sexual relationships that are not between a man and woman. Sex between two men or between two women will lead to 100 lashes. This has caused many sex changes in the country with an estimated amount of 15,000 to 150,000 transsexuals. In some cases, it is punishable by death.

An Analysis of Head Down
Spoiler: click to toggle
I chose a song called “Head Down” by Nine Inch Nails. It’s a conflict between two sides, both very different. On one side, there is control, power and voice. And on the other side its change, dreams, escape and loss of beliefs. The instruments represent that through low hums and distorted sounds on the powerful side and long, drawn out keys for the weak.
That is what it is to me. I see it that way because I already know what the song is about and it applies to me without having to change too much of the original thoughts of the lyrics.
I see it as day-to-day life, internally and externally. There are a lot of people out there that want to tell people how to act and what to do: Usually people in power. And there are equal amounts of people that just don’t care how you live your life. They’re too busy dealing with their own to worry about yours.
One part in the song that I want to point out is “What you running from?/All your hate/What you’ve become” because it’s the speaker talking about himself, taking it out on others. That entire side of the song is aggression toward ones own mistakes focused onto other people.
On the other hand, there are the lyrics “And this is all a dream/And none of you are real/I’ll give anything”. It’s the thought that eventually the two sides become one. The victim becomes the aggressor and the aggressor becomes the victim in one way or the other, whether it be psychological or physical. It’s like this person wants all of these terrible mistakes to not be real with the hope that they will wake up and realize they can start over.
There are a lot of things in my own life that I wish I could do over but I came to realize there’s no point in dwelling on what’s been done. But more on what’s going to happen to make the past right. How two conflicting sides become one in the end and how you have to deal with it.Spoiler: click to toggle
