For me Mary Poppins is my favourite movie followed closely by Peewee's Big Adventure. Ha! Just kidding My top 5 movies of all time (so far - I'm only 32 I hope to change my top 5 several times before the final 5 are etched in my head stone) 5: Akira - A government experiment goes wrong and leaves a teen aged boy with the power of a God but without the emotional discipline to control himself. Katsuhiro Otomo's dystopian nightmare is brought to life in the form of Anime. It's really about as bleak as a city can get in Neo-Tokyo where rival bike gangs tear each other apart over territorial disputes and jurisprudence has been thrown out the window in favour of marshal law. The story is a great analogy for man's tampering with nuclear weapons and the potential irreversible damage we could cause due to our own imbecility. It unashamedly poses the question - Are we really worth saving? I watch this movie once a year or so and it never gets old for me. 4: City Of God - Young Rocket was born and brought up in the slums surrounding Rio de Janeiro where he watched almost all his friends turn to crime and gang life. He found a different path when he was given a camera and learned that he could make a living out of photographing his day to day life in the City of God. This is truly a masterpiece and deserves to be watched at least once. It just goes to show that in the face of overwhelming odds something good can come from the worst places on Earth. 3: Downfall - The last hours of Hitler's regime told from eye witness reports from within his Bunker in Berlin. Whether or not this is an accurate portrayal of the events that actually took place it is most definitely a moving and seductive piece of film. The mood from the outset is oppressive and despondent and it is hard to watch at points but when you think of the atrocities caused because of the decisions made by these few men it makes the pill a little easier to swallow. Most Youtubers will recognise the famous speech Hitler makes to his generals when he finally realises the war is over. 2: Lady Vengeance - There are shocking films and then there are Park Chan-Wook films. As with his other contributions this is no exception in the level of inhumanity it displays. A woman is released from prison after wrongly serving 15 years for the murder of a child. She is hell bent on finding the person truly responsible and making them pay for the crime with their life. The story chills me to the bone but I keep coming back to it for more like a glutton for punishment. 1: Fight Club - Because everyone wishes they could be like Tyler Durden. The book is one of the biggest protests against the establishment in America that I have ever read and yet they turned it into a Brad Pitt movie! If that isn't irony then I don't know what is. I love it for its grittiness and the insidious mood set right from the word go. The ideas that give it wings are the flaws in the system that pull us all down yet which we strive to maintain daily! We can choose slavery through submission or we can achieve freedom through dissent. If you haven't seen the film yet then I suggest you make a point of doing so as soon as possible. That's all folks |

I will have to say the LOTR trilogy as well. There are so many great movies out there, but I think what makes a movie truly great to me is if I want to watch it over and over again. I know it is cheesey as hell, but I have watched The Fifth Element more times than I can remember. Of course there are others I will watch over and over, but I will save those for another day. |

9 out of 10 doctors agree, if you answered Lord of the Rings in this thread, you should probably fit yourself for a dress and panties. Not one mention of Ghostbusters or Raiders of the Lost Ark. You people disgust me! |

Yeah LOTR was ok I thought. I read the books when I was a kid and the movies stuck fairly well to the story but not religiously - which is not necessarily a bad thing. Ghostbusters and ROTLA were in my top 5 when I was a teenager ( I actually went to see Ghostbusters at the cinema with my gran in 1984) they were up there with Jaws, Star Wars and Superman 2. As I've grown older, however, my taste in movies has changed quite a bit so they remain as nostalgic heroes in my collection but are relegated to watching them if they appear on TV at Christmas or whatever. |
