Disney is paying $4.05 billion to buy Lucasfilm Ltd., the production company behind "Star Wars," from its chairman and founder, George Lucas. It's also making a seventh movie in the "Star Wars" series.

The Walt Disney Co. announced the agreement to make the purchase in cash and stock Tuesday. Disney added that "Star Wars Episode 7" is scheduled for release in 2015.

The deal brings Lucasfilm under the Disney banner with other brands including Pixar, Marvel, ESPN and ABC.

Kathleen Kennedy, the current co-chairman of Lucasfilm, will become its president and report to Walt Disney Studios Chairman Alan Horn. Lucas will be creative consultant on new "Star Wars" films.

Lucas said in a statement, "It's now time for me to pass `Star Wars' on to a new generation of filmmakers."

After you've died a little inside. Discuss. Or if like me it just hurts too much for words.

http://nooooooooooooooo.com/ is going to get a lot of traffic over the next few days :D

Also i wonder if Disney will try to buy http://starwarsepisode7.com/ it's been owned by this fake rumor guy for years when he tried to make people believe 7 was being made. He'll have the last laugh if Disney give him a huge check to buy it.

To your disappointment SG: http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/movies/news/a434680/star-wars-sequel-not-based-on-timothy-zahn-novels.html

Star Wars: Episode 7 will not be based on Timothy Zahn's popular Thrawn Trilogy novels, according to a report.

Zahn's books, which have been largely embraced by the saga's fanbase, pick up five years after the events of Return of the Jedi and feature the same cast as the original trilogy.

It'll be an original story. What that means for the canon and lore of the universe i don't know because the books were meant to be canon.

According to George Lucas's biographer Dale Pollock, the producer mapped out a 12-part story outline for a complete Star Wars narrative arc, with Episode 7, 8 and 9 focusing on Skywalker in his 30s and 40s.

Pollock read Lucas's outline and interviewed the Star Wars creator at length in the '80s when he was researching his book Skywalking: The Life and Films of George Lucas, according to The Wrap.

"The three most exciting stories were 7, 8 and 9," Pollock said. "They had propulsive action, really interesting new worlds, new characters. I remember thinking, 'I want to see these 3 movies.'"

Pollock added in reference to Disney's $4 billion purchase of the Star Wars saga and Lucasfilm: "Writers will absolutely take his outline. That's in part what Disney bought."

Possible for Hamill to return? Seems odd to recast him since he'll be in his 40's in it and he's only just 60. Dude will have to work out like crazy though ahha.

I've been saying for years (pretty much ever since I read the original Zahn trilogy) that you could and should make sequels to the original trilogy. After the prequel trilogy, however, I didn't want to see Lucas butcher the Star Wars universe anymore (although he still cut away with garbage like The Clone Wars series).

Frankly, I think Disney buying Star Wars could be the best thing for the franchise. Hell, I wish they'd gotten hold of it before episodes 1, II and III were made. George Lucas sucks. Empire Strikes Back was only great because he didn't write the screenplay and he didn't direct it. He only came up with the basic story for it.

Then you look at the nightmare that happened with episodes I and II and well, I don't see how anyone can say George Lucas is a genius.

So yeah, wrest the damn saga away from him, Disney. I can't thank you enough. I had no hope for the Star Wars series at all with Lucas at the helm. Now, I'm cautiously optimistic for Episode 7. Little disappointed that they aren't going to the books, because you've got a fantastic history of events to draw from that even coincide and go beyond the current ages of most of the cast, but we'll see what happens.

That is exactly why i'm on the fence about this too. I like the fact it's no longer in George's hands. He was well out of things when it came to what was best for the Star Wars universe, i guess he knew this since he sold it. I would have been happier had it gone to someone other than Disney because they can be a bit forceful with there franchises and the reason it's not following the books is a bit on the stupid side. That's just calling for plot-holes and making it much harder to provide a good original 7 - 9 trilogy due to the nature of the books that already exist in that timeline. That's what worries me mostly.

Quite a lot of updates for the 7th movie.

Quote:

A leading rumor, is that Matthew Vaughn is in talks to helm the film. The director, who wrote and directed both Kick-Ass and X-Men: First Class, recently dropped out of directing X-Men: Days of Future Past, which he also wrote. But Vaughn is not the only director whose name has been linked to the film. Steven Spielberg, Neill Blomkamp (District 9), Alfonso Cuarón (Gravity), Darren Aronofsky (Requiem for a Dream) and Joss Whedon (The Avengers). Also claims that there are two full trilogies in the works, which would bring us up to Episode XII, and that the new movies will bring back the original characters — including, according to this anonymous insider, Mark Hamill as Luke Skywalker.

“Harrison Ford is open to the idea of doing the movie and he’s upbeat about it, all three of them are,” referring to Ford, Hamill and Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia). The actor is, according to the source, waiting to see a script before deciding. The fact that the actors — who are, after all, human — have aged since their last Star Wars appearances nearly three decades ago wouldn’t be a problem, if Lucas’ original ideas about Episode VII are still in play

Who would you want to direct? For me i'd be fine with any of them as they've all made fantastic movies and could really revive the franchise even under Disney if they get a really strong director this could actually work.

Joss Wheden has experience having done firefly and the great Serenity which draws similar themes and characters from Star Wars so he'd fit nicely. Spielberg obviously has tons of experience, is best friends with George Lucas and visited the sets of the prequel movies a lot not that it means much. But it is looking more likely to be Matthew Vaugn anyway and he is a good director. Happy either way really.
