We have reports that Sir Geoffrey Howe resigned as Deputy Prime Minister and Leader of the House of Commons earlier today on the usual Cabinet meeting.Sir Geoffrey Howe, one of Mrs Thatcher's oldest and staunchest supporters, resigned from his position in protest at Prime Minister's European policy. This was followed by remarks made by Mrs Thatcher in Rome last weekend on European Council meeting where she declared for the first time that Britain would never enter a single currency.

For now there are no comments from the office of Prime Minister or any senior Conservative figure.Downing Street informed us that Prime Minister will as usual attend PMQ's on Wednesday in House of Commons but that she has no plans to hold special PC's or release PR's on this subject for now.

Sir Geoffrey Howe hits government in his resignation speech

Posted Image

Former Deputy Prime Minister Howe today formally addressed House of Commons in his resignation speech that will probably have effects on current government structure.Prime Minister Thatcher refused to comment Howe's speech and she wasn't in Houses of Parliament on Tuesday when all that happened. We have reports form House of Commons and parts of speech...

It started in usual fashion

Code:

I find to my astonishment that a quarter of a century has passed since I last spoke from one of the Back Benches. Fortunately, however, it has been my privilege to serve for the past 12 months of that time as Leader of the House of Commons, so I have been reminded quite recently of the traditional generosity and tolerance of this place. I hope that I may count on that today as I offer to the House a statement about my resignation from the Government.

Code:

The Prime Minister and I have shared something like 700 meetings of Cabinet or shadow Cabinet during the past 18 years, and some 400 hours alongside each other, at more than 30 international summit meetings. For both of us, I suspect, it is a pretty daunting record. The House might well feel that something more than simple matters of style would be necessary to rupture such a well-tried relationship. It was a privilege to serve as my right hon. Friend's first Chancellor of the Exchequer; to share in the transformation of our industrial relations scene; to help launch our free market programme, commencing with the abolition of exchange control; and, above all, to achieve such substantial success against inflation, getting it down within four years from 22 per cent. to 4 per cent. upon the basis of the strict monetary discipline involved in the medium-term financial strategy.

But it ended with very strong accusation towards party leadership and Prime Minister

Code:

But it was as we moved on to consider the crucial monetary issues in the European context that I came to feel increasing concern. Some of the reasons for that anxiety were made very clear by my right hon. Friend the Member for Blaby (Mr. Lawson) in his resignation speech just over 12 months ago. Like him, I concluded at least five years ago that the conduct of our policy against inflation could no longer rest solely on attempts to measure and control the domestic money supply. We had no doubt that we should be helped in that battle, and, indeed, in other respects, by joining the exchange rate mechanism of the European monetary system.

Code:

However, it must be said that that practical conclusion has been achieved only at the cost of substantial damage to her Administration and, more serious still, to its inflation achievements.

As my right hon. Friend the Member for Blaby explained : "The real tragedy is that we did not join the exchange rate mechanism at least five years ago."

As he also made clear,

"That was not for want of trying."

Code:

But it is crucially important that we should conduct those arguments upon the basis of a clear understanding of the true relationship between this country, the Community and our Community partners. And it is here, I fear, that my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister increasingly risks leading herself and others astray in matters of substance as well as of style.

Code:

The tragedy is--and it is for me personally, for my party, for our whole people and for my right hon. Friend herself, a very real tragedy--that the Prime Minister's perceived attitude towards Europe is running increasingly serious risks for the future of our nation. It risks minimising our influence and maximising our chances of being once again shut out. We have paid heavily in the past for late starts and squandered opportunities in Europe. We dare not let that happen again. If we detach ourselves completely, as a party or a nation, from the middle ground of Europe, the effects will be incalculable and very hard ever to correct.

Howe finished his resignation speech with very strong point and it is to be seen how Downing Street 10 will react to this tomorrow when Prime Minister announced she will take PMQ's

Code:

The conflict of loyalty, of loyalty to my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister--and, after all, in two decades together that instinct of loyalty is still very real--and of loyalty to what I perceive to be the true interests of the nation, has become all too great. I no longer believe it possible to resolve that conflict from within this Government. That is why I have resigned. In doing so, I have done what I believe to be right for my party and my country. The time has come for others to consider their own response to the tragic conflict of loyalties with which I have myself wrestled for perhaps too long.

Opposition Leader killed in Car Accident

Posted Image

...We now have some breaking news, news is just in that a car transporting the Leader of the Opposition, Neil Kinnock, to a press conference in Brighton has crashed. It appears that a tree collapsed as a result of the recent strong storms, and has completely crushed the rear of the vehicle, killing Mr Kinnock.

The Government has yet to comment, but the Labour Party has issued a statement wishing well the family of a man who many expected to lead Labour to their first election victory in decades.

Britain Falls into Recession

Posted Image

...We've got some rather poor news for Britain's economy, as the CBI have now confirmed that the United Kingdom has entered a recession, as some economists had feared might happen. All regions have reported a fall in output. The government, which already has quite a bit to worry about, may have to worry about yet another thing tonight.

This recession has affected many countries across the globe, with many economies around the world struggling. Britain has managed to cope somewhat better than some other countries and it has taken this country a longer time to enter the recession. Well, we're in it now it seems.

Now for our sports news......

LABOUR LEADERSHIP ELECTION UNDERWAY

...And so it seems, for now atleast, that Alain Prost and Aryton Senna will dominate again.

Thank you, now onto one of our main stories. Following the death of Neil Kinnock, the Labour Party has began the process of electing a new leader, and thus far there are three candidates in the ballot. Sir George Saxon is with us live from Westminster, George?

Sir George Saxon

Yes, hello and good evening. The Labour Party has just days after Mr Kinnock's tragic death began the process or electing a new leader. There are known to be three candidates at this time, the Shadow Defence Secretary, James Maxwell, backbencher George Scott and the Shadow Chancellor. Both Maxwell and Scott have already began public campaigning, and for now the polls suggest that this could be a tight result.

Breaking News:THATCHER RESIGNS

The BBC has just been informed by an independent source in the Conservative Party that Margaret Thatcher has resigned as Prime Minister and as Leader of the Conservative Party and is due to go to the Palace to tender her resignation to the Queen.

We now have pictures coming in of the Prime Minister's car on the way to Buckingham Palace...

Posted Image

It is believed that Mrs Thatcher's resignation has come as a result of rising dissent in the Government and the wider Conservative Party, with the first female Prime Minister losing her iron grip and also faced with a challenge to her Leadership. Michael Heseltine has already announced his challenge and it is not know whether more hats have been thrown into the ring.

Mrs Thatcher's Government was hit by a high profile resignation from Government in the form of Geoffrey Howe, who resigned as Deputy Leader and Leader of the House of Commons last week. This is apparently what sparked the fall in confidence in Margaret Thatcher's leadership.

We'll have more on this story as we have it...

Breaking News: THATCHER RESIGNS CONT

Posted Image

Margaret Thatcher has, in the last half an hour, given her resignation speech outside of No.10 Downing Street and subsequently left No.10. Mrs Thatcher gave her statement shortly after returning from Buckingham Palace where she tendered her resignation as Prime Minister, she has thusly resigned from her position as leader of the Conservative Party.

Here is what Margaret Thatcher had to say on her resignation:

*Ignore the John Major bit! :P

Mrs Thatcher was then cheered out of Downing Street by bystanders and her supporters. Britain's first female Prime Minister has resigned, and it looks like the next Prime Minister won't be female. The official nominations in the leadership election which has been triggered by the resignation have not been announced yet but that is expected to be done in the next 24 hours.

This has been a historic week for British politics with both of the big parties having simultaneous leadership elections, the Liberal Democrats have been relatively quiet in comparison.

In our other main political story, James Maxwell has pulled out of the Labour leadership race for "personal reasons." Christopher McGowan has been nominated for leadership to face George Scott.

Breaking News:SANTIAGO IS NEW PM

Posted Image

It has been announced that no-one has decided to stand against Ryan Santiago for leadership of the Conservative Party and he has been subsequently elected unopposed as the Conservative Party's new leader and Britain's new Prime Minister. Mr Santiago, it is reported, went to an audience with the Queen at Buckingham Palace immediately upon his election and he has yet to make a statement.

Little is known about Santiago's political orientations apart from that he is Conservative and was a supporter of the outgoing Prime Minister, Margaret Thatcher. With a recession and numerous social problems to deal with Mr Santiago will have to hit the ground running.

Meanwhile, the Labour Party is believed to be about to go to the ballot box to elect their new leader.

Breaking News:McGowan Elected Labour Leader

Posted Image

The Labour leadership election triggered by the tragic death of Neil Kinnock was this afternoon, concluded. The results were pretty unanimous:

Christopher McGowan-62.3%
George Scott-37.7%

So Christopher McGowan was elected by a large winning margin, let's go to our Labour Party reporter, David Kerr, David, what does mean for Labour and its future and how did this result come about?

DK: Thank you, John. We have seen the election of a far left candidate, so Neil Kinnock's shift towards the centre ground will most likely be reversed and we'll see a shift back to the left for Labour. This could mean a number of electoral possibilities in the future. Either Labour hold up well and show their policies in a good light and win the next election which would mean a socialist Government for Britain or the Tories sufficiently show holes in McGowan's socialist policies which could set Labour for another 11 years in Opposition, either way, the next two years will be especially interesting. On to how this result came about, well that's interesting. James Maxwell, the sure fire favourite for leadership who was expected to win by a landslide dropped out and McGowan stepped up. George Scott however did very little campaigning at all. So, with no agenda for Scott most of Maxwell's would be votes went to the man who had campaigned, McGowan. However, there was significant votes for Scott just to try and ensure there wouldn't be an old socialist leader.

Thank you for that David, indeed the next two years will be interesting. In other news...
