Election Night 1990 Next up here on the BBC, it's time for election night 1990. Opening Theme and Titles... David Dimbleby Hello and welcome to the BBC Election Night 1990. We apologise for the delay in getting started, hopefully there will be no further technical issues tonight. In the studio all around me experts will be analysing every single result as it comes in, and we'll be bringing you the latest news as it happens. One of those experts is the former Independent MP turned political analyst, Sir George Saxon, who joins us now from Westminster, Sir George? Sir George Saxon Hello David, it is somewhat uncomfortable to be, for the first time, speaking to someone in the studio from the outside world, it's usually the inverse for me, but today of course I'll be here to report on events and news as things happen, and throughout the night I will not only freeze to death, but hopefully provide you with an insight as to exactly how and why this election has taken shape. David Dimbleby Alongside Sir George, we have Mr David Kerr joining us from his little office somewhere above me in this studio, hello David? Can he hear me? He can't hear me, technical issues are after all a trademark of BBC Election Night programming... But Mr Kerr will be interiewing several key figures throughout the night. |

David Dimbleby Oh, we appear to have a stranger in the studio, hello, Mr Kerr! David Kerr Well hello, David, I'm David and it looks as if David will be the next Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. *Turns to BBC camera* I am of course referring to David MacDonald, leader of the Labour party who currently have a opinion poll lead of around 7%. However, opinion polls count for nothing, the only poll that counts is the final results of today's voting, aren't they George? Sir George Saxon Indeed, that is true. It appears that Labour are likely to gain a lot of ground across the country and bad news is expected for the Conservatives and a bit of a mixed result for the Liberal Democrats, they seem to be round about where they were in the '87 election, which is actually good for them, considering the drop they suffered. David Dimbleby Thank you, gentlemen, as usual we'll be giving you all of the results but before, we have our Exit Poll and here it is... Conservative-248 Labour-350 Liberal Democrat-21 Socialist Labour-2 Others-6 Labour Overall Majority of 73 David Dimbleby Well there it is, how accurate it will be, we have yet to see... |

Well, David i'm absolutely delighted that I have been re-elected first and foremost but what is even more pleasing is that my constituents have returned me to Westminster with an increased majority and I have got to redeliver on the faith and trust they have vested in me. |

well, I'm very happy. It is clear that the scottish people firmly believe that the labour party are the best party for scotland. I'm glad to see us make gains from the other parties. It's abundantly clear from the result that the conservatives have been sent packing for the majority of seats that they held. It's early yet and we still have a long night ahead but early indications show that if we keep up performances like we have in scotland then we will be set for a big majority indeed. |

David Kerr We have the South... South England Conservative-194 Labour-100 Liberal Democrat-10 Socialist Labour-0 The Final Result Conservative-248 Labour-342 Liberal Democrat-31 Socialist Labour3 Others-26 David Kerr And that's it, Labour have a majority, which in real terms is around 34. Certainly wasn't as big as was expected, our exit poll was a bit off but oh well. However, Mr MacDonald and his party will be chuffed. Sir George Saxon As will Christopher McGowan three MPs ain't bad for them, they weren't really going to get much more than that. However, the big winners, apart from Labour, must be the Lib Dems who have done a lot better than expected. David Dimbleby Well, that's it from us, BBC News will continue with coverage of Mr MacDonald heading to the Palace, today. A big thank you goes out to David Kerr and George Saxon for joining me and thank you for tuning in, have a lovely day... |
