Keir Martland stands before a crowd in London to launch the Conservative election campaign

Quote:

Ladies and gentlemen,

I believe - strongly - that you, and not the Government, should be in charge of your life. That's what Conservatism stands for.

I believe in a responsible society Government's duties are clear: to protect Britain in a dangerous world; to look after those who cannot look after themselves; to protect law-abiding people from crime and disorder; and to protect the value of our currency - without which all spending pledges are worthless and all savings at risk.

But I believe also in a society in which government doesn't try to take responsibility away from people. Politicians must never make the mistake of thinking the state always knows best.

Who will give you the power to choose - to say for yourself what you want? And who will give you the personal prosperity that comes from low taxes - from your own savings, your own pension, your own home? Who will let you build up your own stake in Britain's success - and pass it on to your children?

You know I believe in choice. And in this election, as always, there is another choice. You can vote for our opponents, and watch them take Britain back to the 1970s. Back to socialism. Back to strikes. Back to strife. Back to the world's pity, or worse still, contempt. I don't believe Britain wants that. I know the world doesn't want that for Britain!

Seeing as we are only hours BEFORE campaigning starts this will be noted as usual and just be treated as if it were posted when campaigning started. ;)

This summer, thousands of young people will leave school and university and look for their first job. Despite this, the Tory Government supported by the Lib Dems is cutting vital help for young people to get jobs, training or a place at university.

SAY NO TO LIBERAL DEMOCRATS AND NO TO THE CONSERVATIVES

Christopher McGowan holds a speech in London to trade unionists.

Comrades! I'm glad so many of the working classes' finest, the trade unionists, showed up today. We live in a dark age in British history. After decades of class struggle following the depths of despair reached during the Victorian age, many thought that the Unions would hold a powerful position afterwards. Today, we know they were wrong.

The Thatcherite Anti-Union Laws is not just a reprehensive attack on the Trade Unions, but against the working class itself. They have reduced the Unions to a mess, simply put. Through no fault of the leadership or the membership of the Unions, they fell apart and was made impotent against the growing attacks from the Free Marketeering extremism of the Thatcherites. Privatisation upon privatisation, mine and industry closures and outsourcing. Increasing unemployment. Yet, the Tories calls this a success!

Why? Because the Tories measure success by the amount of profits going directly to the capitalists' pockets. Not the welfare of the people, not the fairness of society, but the degree of raw exploitation. This is unacceptable! Yet, not even New Labour, self-proclaimed champions of the "people" do not want to abolish the Thatcherite Anti-Union Laws.

Why? Because Labour is not longer the party of Labourers. It has been taken over by liberals and the middle class. Instead of fighting for the rights of the workers, they appeal to the middle class. A part of this, is their position in opposition to the Unions. They don't want to end the Thatcherite Anti-Union Laws. Why? Because, like the Tories, they measure success by the amount of money in the capitalists' pockets. A vote for New Labour, could just as well have gone to the Lib-Dems at this point.

So what option do we Trade Unionists have, comrades? We have the Socialist Labour Party. We are the party that stands for the founding principles of the Labour Party, namely Socialism, Equality and Trade Unionism. We are not, like most other parties to the left of Labour, consisting of extremists. We are the inheritors of the Labour Party of our fathers, grandfathers and hopefully... our generation. In the election, Labour voters now have two Labours to choose from... New Labour or Socialist Labour. Middle-class or Working Class. Liberalism or Socialism. Privilege or Equality.

Join me, comrades. Vote for the Socialist Labour Party! Join the Socialist Labour Party! Together, we can rejuvenate the Trade Union movement! Together, we can make our country a fair, free and socialist country!

David MacDonald Addresses Voters in London

Hello everybody,

Can I just start by thanking the Mirror for their endorsement and I would hope that this is the first of many endorsements. I would say that I’m looking forward to tonight’s Television debate and I anticipate a close contest between mr martland and I. However, that’s for this evening. I’d like to talk to you about labour’s plans to tackle disadvantage in our nations schools.

Firstly, Labour recognise where class sizes are too big they must fall. Smaller class sizes means a better education for your child. Therefore, I am proud to commit to the following aims on class sizes;
• The national average class size for nurseries shall not exceed 6.
• The national average class size for primary schools shall not exceed 20.
• The national average class size for secondary schools shall not exceed 25.
• The national average class size for special schools shall not exceed 5.

This will be enshrined in law so to ensure that every child is given a good education and it gives teachers the time to work with your child so that their educational needs are addressed. Conference, I would further say that labour are proud, proud that we can stand up for inequality, proud to commit to smaller classes and proud that we can say every child will get a better education under our plans!
Furthermore, we need to widen participation within education. Therefore, we propose that we identify the 1000 most disadvantaged schools in the country and we will hire a Widening Participation Co-Ordinator at the rank of Vice-Principal. Their role shall be:

• Establishing and implementing a school strategy to ensure students are encouraged and enabled to identify and reach their full potential.
• Develop a knowledge base within the school amongst all teachers about how to inspire students to reach their potential, challenge themselves and how to go about fulfilling their ambitions.
• Develop a knowledge base within the school as to careers counselling skills, personal statement writing skills, interview skills to enable the entire teaching body to become able to help students with these skills.
• To manage a team of Learning & Aspiration Mentors who will work with students on a one to one and group basis (see below).
• To develop a network of contacts between the school and universities and other Further Education and Higher Education Institutes, including arranging visits out to and visits in from various institutions.
• To liaise with careers counsellors or advisers to ensure quality of advice and teaching.
• To develop a specialist advice and support service to advise students on the financial supports available to support them in continuing their studies at higher education or further education including ability to advise comprehensively on Student Finance England, EMA, Bursaries, Scholarships and Trust funding.
• To develop a specialist advice and support service to support students in continuing their education in adverse situations, e.g. in the event of pregnancy, bereavement and mental or physical ill-health.

These professionals will be highly trained education professionals who will not be teaching classes but ensuring schools have an appropriate support service to co-ordinate its efforts to raise students ambitions and aspirations. They will work across existing services within schools, working with teachers, counsellors, school management, careers advisers etc to ensure a coherent and comprehensive support service.

That is however, not enough on its own. In the most disadvantaged schools and in each of these schools we will hire 5 Learning & Aspiration Mentors whose role will be to work directly with students to encourage, inspire and support them in reaching their potential. To fill the role, all LAMs will be required to hold or be working towards a basic careers advice qualification but their role will not be to be careers advisers, though they can serve the role if needs be. Instead their roles will be to:

• Work with the WPC to implement the schools Maximising Potential strategy.
• Work with students in one-to-one sessions tying together a broad range of support services in identifying where a students potential lies and how they can maximise that potential . All students should have regular meetings with a specific mentor throughout their school career. This should include at least one automatic meeting every 10 weeks with additional meetings by mutual agreement.
• Work with students in group workshop sessions to identify areas of potential and interest and enable a creative and supportive atmosphere in which school colleagues share knowledge, experience and aspiration to mutual benefit.
• To assist directly with students who seek help in applying for university places including help with drafting personal statement, help with interview preparation and assistance with applying for financial support.
• To identify appropriate cases where students should speak with a more specialist adviser such at the WPC.

These LAMs will be encouraged to develop good working relationships with students based on trust and so they will work largely on a voluntary basis. While students will be expected to attend a number of meetings with their mentor, any applications or development should be mutually agreed and the student cannot view them as ‘just another teacher giving them pointless homework’.

The fact is this that budgets need to be supported and resources are needed for each and every school in the country. We will maintain school budget at or higher than the ideal. Furthermore, We will provide a £20,000 annual grant to schools specifically to assist them with extra curricular activities. They will have to show, in using the fund, that:
• They have used it to provide a range of extra-curricular opportunities, rather than simply focused on just one area.
• That they have included at least 60% of students on Free School Lunches in the opportunities or have used at least 40% of the fund to reduce financial barriers for poorer students to participate in extra curricular opportunities.
The link between the quality of teaching and test results is very true indeed. And in disadvantaged schools there is sometimes not the best standard of teaching. We will encourage teachers to teach at the 500 most disadvantaged secondary schools by offering the 30,000 teachers who work there a £3,000 Disadvantaged School Allowance (DSA) per year. The Allowance will be payable once the teacher has spent six months teaching in the school and will be backdated for the first six months service and will be added, tax free, to their monthly salary.
In conclusion, conference, Our plans do cost money but what is more important- cutting the deficit while destroying our childrens education or cutting the deficit while maintaining the standards in education. But maintaining standards isn’t what Britain needs we need a better education system for all.

As you can see labour are confident in tackling disadvantage in our nations school and that’s what our policy will do. It will make it more attractive to stay on at school and to achieve better qualifications. The conservatives have failed on education, standards are falling and that is indeed a worry. How are we to compete in the world if our nation’s children aren’t getting a good enough education? They cannot. We are committed to a good education for all and our proposals will when put in place ensure smaller class sizes and a better education for all.

Thank you and on polling day Vote labour!

The PM closes his campaign in Westminster
Ladies and gentlemen,

The time has come, for you to vote. For you to determine who your next MPs, and next government will be. I ask one last time, that you vote for the government that has been improving Britain since 1979. The government that believes in freedom, fairness, responsibility, society and opportunity.

I want you to ask yourselves one question before you vote: Without the Conservatives, where would you be?

Good night!
