Pre-Clone Wars
YearTitle
25,783 years before the Battle of YavinScholars and Healers, strong in what would come to be called 'the Force' gather on the planet of Tython and, together, form what would become the Jedi order, originally as a purely monastic faith.

25,643 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Jedi take to the stars and colonise the planet of Ossus, electing to use it as a place of learning and a repository of knowledge.

25,023 years before the Battle of Yavin
Representatives from several worlds, primarily those belonging to the Humans and Duros, meet to create the Galactic Republic, the first true interstellar Democracy in the Galaxy. Apart from minor skirmishes, there is no true threat to the new Republic, and it expands rapidly, ushering in a Golden Age.

25,011 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Jedi encounter the Galactic Republic. By mutual agreement, the Jedi join the Republic and serve as its protectors and spiritual guides.

24,550 years before the Battle of Yavin
The 'First Great Schism' occurs. Though the side that began the war is lost to history, it is known that the anti-Council forces were led by a young Jedi named 'Xendor'. Unlike almost all inter-Jedi conflicts, both groups were technically Light Side Jedi, and Xendor initially petitioned peacefully. Circumstances, however, led to war, and the eventual extermination of Xendor and his followers.

24,022 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Hutts, with their mighty Tionese Empire, declare war on the Galactic Republic after a series of Border disputes, leading to the Tionese War. The Hutts overestimated their grip on their systems and underestimated the Republic's resolve--as well as the might of the Jedi. The war ends in a massive Tionese defeat, the dissolution of the Hutt Empire, and the total destruction of the Tionese planet of Desevro at Republic hands.

17,018 years before the Battle of Yavin
The First Alsakan conflict erupts, between forces of the Republican 'Grand Corporations' along the Perlemian Trade route and Alsakan companies, backed by Corellian investors over exclusive trade rights in the region. The war ends inconclusively, and Republican officials step in and forces a ceasefire before any major gains can be made by either side.

16,208 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Second Alsakan conflict begins. Most of the forces are the same, with the exception of the fact that Republic troops now back the Grand Corporations. The conflict is many times bloodier than the previous attempt, and results in large scale damage to several Core Worlds, including Coruscant.

15,552 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Hutts fight a Civil War amongst their remaining holdings, leaving the homeworld, Varl and many other Hutt planets desolate and unlivable wastes. They re-locate to the planet Evocar, where they quickly massacre the native Evocii, subjugating the survivors and either enslaving them or sending them to the planet's moon. They renamed Evocar Nal Hutta('Glorious Jewel') and the Moon Nar Shadaa(though the name's translation has been lost to time--no living Hutt remembers the meaning in old Huttese)

14,520 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Third Alsakan Conflict erupts, causing even more chaos and destruction. Aside from the 'Cleansing of Rucapar', in which a city-planet under Alsakan control was annihilated, no significant gains or losses were incurred by either side.

13,649 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Fourth Alsakan Conflict begins. No significant changes are made to the status quo.

13,050 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Fifth Alsakan Conflict--by far the most destructive--erupts. Massive overhauls in both sides' militaries are made, and the Alsakans are pushed to the brink of defeat, though they hold off the Republic just enough the end the war in a stalemate.

11,820 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Sixth and final major Alsakan Conflict breaks out, this time pitting the Alsakans against a neighbour state; Pius Dea, in an attempt to regain ground lost in the Fifth Alsakan Conflict. The campaign is hugely unsuccessful, and due to losses incurred both in terms of manpower and economic resources, the Alsakans are crippled. The Republic enacts a largely bloodless takeover less than a hundred years later.

7,011 years before the Battle of Yavin
An order of malevolent Force users split from the Jedi Order inciting a war that would come to be known as the Hundred-Year Darkness. They lose the war, and flee into unknown space, eventually landing on the desolate world of Korriban and inter-breeding with the native Sith species, as well as assuming the role of their god-protectors.

5,000 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Great Hyperspace War begins when Republic explorers land on Korriban and are swiftly captured by the native Sith and their Dark Jedi Overlords. The Dark Jedi Naga Sadow, then-leader of the Sith 'Empire', quickly realises this is an opportunity. He claims the Republic plans to attack and that the Explorers are advance scouts. Outraged, the Sith are all too happy to go to war, and within a year, the Sith have beaten the unsuspecting Republic back to the Core Worlds, with Naga Sadow utilising an obscure force technique known as 'Battle Meditation', inside a meditation sphere orbiting Korriban's sun. The Sith raze Coruscant, and billions die before another Sith Warlord--Gav Daragon--betrays Naga Sadow. As Sadow's forces fight the traitor's, the Republic uses the confusion to beat the Sith forces back, and arrive in the Korriban system to find Sadow and Daragon's forces fighting around his meditation sphere. Sweeping in, they annihalate both sides. Naga Sadow and his few surviving supporters flee into unknown space, and stumble upon the planet Yavin, where they settle on the jungle-covered fourth moon. Sadow begins conducting grisly experiments on his supporters, warping them into the hideous Massassi soldiers. With them in tow, he builds himself a temple--later known as the 'Massassi Temple', and is interred within it when he dies, his Massassi guarding the moon and their overlord's tomb. The Republic elect to annihalate all life on Korriban, and the few survivors flee into uncharted space, later landing on Dromund Kass, vengeance burning in their hearts for generations.

3,996 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Jedi Exar Kun, in a search for knowledge, goes in secret to Yavin IV, after exhaustive research into the Great Hyperspace War. There, he finds the Massassi and the tomb of Naga Sadow. He is captured by the Massassi and forced to fight a massive beast for sport--he slays it only by calling on the power of the Dark Side. He forces the Massassi to bend to his will and leads them on to the stars once again. He encounters another fallen Jedi--Ulic Qel-Droma--in the Empress Teta System, and after a brief battle, Kun bests Qel-Droma and his Krath followers. Now united--Kun the Master, Qel-Droma the Apprentice, as the Brotherhood of the Sith--they embark on a war of conquest, sweeping aside Republic defenses. Only when the Jedi are called out, and the combined forces of the Jedi and Republic make one massive final stand on Ossus, when Ulic Qel-Droma slays his brother Cay Qel-Droma in battle and subsequently is torn apart by grief, renouncing the Dark Side and turning on his former master, is the Brotherhood of the Sith defeated. Exar Kun, in a mad grab for power, flees to Yavin IV with his minions in tow--Krath and Massassi. He begins a dark ritual, sapping the life of his soldiers to grant himself immortality. The Jedi, however, are right behind him and interrupt the ritual, banishing Kun. He is bound as a Force Spirit to the Massassi Temple, unable to affect his surroundings in any way for millenia.

3,976 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Mandalorians(of Mandalore), augmented by 'Neo-Crusaders', or non-Mandalorians who joined the ranks, begin a war of conquest against the Galactic Republic, whom they see as weak, but they view the Jedi as the ultimate challenge for a Warrior--a key tenet of their culture.

Initially sweeping aside all resistance, the Mandalorians are nearly victorious--especially as the Jedi refused to rise to the challenge--when Revan and his allies, known as the 'Revanchists', join the fray. The injection of so many Jedi into the flagging Republic line bolsters morale, and Revan is an uncommonly good strategist, able to outfox the Mandalorians at almost every turn.

The final battle takes place over Malachor V, a place of spiritual significance to the Mandalorians. Unable to resist such a challenge from the Republic Fleet, the Mandalorians took the bait, and after a long a grueling battle, in which Revan personally kills Mandalore--leader of the Mandalorians--in battle, Revan gives the order to turn a gravimetric bomb designed by the Zabraki scientist Bao-Dur--specially tuned for the odd gravitational fluctuations around Malachor--to be fired. When Jedi General Meetra Surik receives the order, she simply nods to Bao-Dur, and he activates his weapon. In an instant, Malachor V and all the civilians and soldiers upon it--including many Jedi and Republic Troops--die, and the Mandalorian Wars end.

3,958 years before the battle of Yavin
Revan and his best friend Alek, who had vanished into unknown space after the Mandalorian Wars, return with a fleet in tow, which they quickly turn on the still-weakened Republic. Citing the need to prevent another Mandalorian Wars by removing the old order, the newly anointed Darth Revan and Darth Malak nearly annihalate the Republic they'd just finished fighting to protect. Only Darth Malak's betrayal of his master, Bastila Shan's capture of the incapacitated Revan and subsequent Force Brainwashing--directly leading to Revan's redemption and Malak's death--avert the crisis that faces the Republic. Revan and Malak's Sith Empire fragment into its constituent parts, and Sith Warlords squabbl for scraps while the Republic licks its wounds. Revan leaves for unknown space once again, leaving the Republic to deal with its problems itself.

3,954 years before the Battle of Yavin
The remnants of the Sith Empire manage to convalesce into a cohesive whole, united under the Sith Triumvirate of Darth Nihilus, Darth Treya, and Darth Sion. Their nearly successful campaign to slaughter the remaining Jedi comes to be known as the 'Jedi Purge', and later the 'First Jedi Purge', which is averted by Jedi General Meetra Surik's defeat of the Sith Triumvirate, at which point she, too, goes into the unknown regions, presumably to aid Revan.

3,681 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Republic, now wholly healed, is suddenly attacked by the 'True Sith Empire'--the one they'd tried to annihilate at the end of the Great Hyperspace War, back for revenge. It is revealed that they have backed nearly every attempt to destroy the Republic since, from the Mandalorian Wars all the way to the recent attempted Jedi Purge. Sick of waiting, and with a formidable military machine, the Sith are on the cusp of destroying the Republic when, unexpectedly, they sue for peace in 3,653BBY. The terms are heavily in favour of the Sith, but the Republic has little choice but to accept after the sacking of Coruscant. This war comes to be known as the 'Great Galactic War'. It also is the last time Coruscant is successfully attacked for over three and a half thousand years, until the Clone Wars

3,653-3,642 years before the Battle of Yavin
In this timeframe both sides--Empire and Republic, Sith and Jedi--lick their wounds, build their armies, and do their best to keep the other side from beating them to the punch without violating the treaty.

3,642 years before the Battle of Yavin
War resumes, and the now well-rested Republic quickly gains the upper hand, as the Sith are unable to rebuild losses as quickly as the Republic. The war ends in a decisive Republic Victory, and the Sith Empire is utterly crushed.* The Republic ushers in an era of widespread peace--no major conflicts erupt for the next thousand years.

2,000 years before the Battle of Yavin
The Jedi Master Phanius vanishes for some time, later emerging as 'Darth Ruin' with an army of Dark Jedi, 'Pureblood' Sith, and Humans favourable to his rule. The so-called 'New Sith Wars' last a thousand years, and see increased Jedi militancy and less and less Democratic representation in the Republic, as more and more liberties have to be sacrificed in favour of survival.

1,000 years before the Battle of Yavin
  • The Republic and Jedi finally defeat the New Sith in the skies over the gas giant Ruusan, and Supreme Chancellor Tarsus Valorum enacts the 'Ruusan Reformations'--drastically restructuring the Republic's government, reducing the military, and removing the Jedi's long-held status as military commanders, believing the high levels of militancy in the Republic were the reason the wars began in the first place. While controversial, the Reforms are successful, and lead to a golden age of peace in the Republic, as well as ushering in what was called 'The Golden Age of the Jedi'. No major wars erupt until the Clone Wars.

  • Darth Bane and surviving members of the Sith establish the Rule of Two, to prevent additional, excessively costly wars with the Jedi and Republic until they are ready. He believes victory is more likely to be gained through subtlety than brute force.

  • This era also sees destruction of the Zygerrian Slave Empire at the hands of the Republic's new Judicial Forces--the replacement for the Republic Army. This is their proving ground as a fighting force, and cements their reputation as solid soldiers and good peacetime forces.
