(I'm taking a few hours to finish this and the first few chapters today and in the morning tomorrow because I'm having family visit until Saturday and I'm afraid I might not get much reading done while they're here. So I may be posting things a little quicker than my usual reading pace.) As for Valaquenta, I thought this was much easier to read than Ainulindalë. The way it was set up (named a Valar, then gave a paragraph description of them) made it pretty easy to keep track of who we were reading about. After the first section I was a little lost with all of the names and kept having to reread my notes to make sure I was getting them right, but this part definitely helped separate them in my mind. I also liked that we start to see a few familiar names/words from LotR, as I'm sure will continue with the rest of the book from here on. I didn't have many questions with this one except for I wasn't really sure what 'Númenóreans' meant. I feel like that might have already been explained and I just missed it when I went back and looked for it. Here are my notes from this one :) Page 1 Page 2 Page 3 Page 4 |

I'm not sure if anyone's started the Valaquenta but I have a handy chart that summarizes all my notes about the Valar and how they seem to be ordered in this chapter. I've listed below each Vala their Elvish name (if one is mentioned in the book), what they "specialize" in or just in general what they are in charge of, and any possible relations (might've missed a few). Edit: oh shoot, durinbane, we must have posted at the same time XD uh I think the Númenoreans are humans (dunno if he's mentioned the Edain yet but their descendants basically) and uh a bunch of stuff happens? No spoilers but... Edited by therohirrim, Feb 3 2015, 08:50 PM.

Ashley, Númenóreans are the men of Númenor (the island that the Valar gave to the men who helped them and the elves in the last war against Melkor). Númenor's first king was Elros, Elrond's brother, who chose to be mortal and his descendants had more years of life than the 'normal' men in Middle-earth. |

Oh I love that chart you made, Hailey. That's such a simple way of putting it. I'll have to copy that down for extra easy reference. And thank you both. I don't think the Edain have been mentioned yet, but I'll keep that in mind as we go :) |

It's alright! :) I think it's nice to have some extra, not spoiler sorts of information like that. For me it's kind of hard to connect and understand some of what's going on when something is just mentioned once and then actually explained much later. I don't like just having to ignore it and hope I'm assuming correctly as to what it means. |

As Ashley already said, this chapter was much easier! Just a list of names really, so I'll just leave my notes here~ I was just confused what Valimar was but I've already continued reading so now I know that ;D But does anyone know what Aman is, I think it' not been explaind yet? |

I, as well, found this chapter easier to read, despite other mentions of words I don't really know, like the Noldor, the Eldar (well now I kinda know who they are, but it's still a big piece of information to remember what the Elves were up to when going or not to the undying Lands). Each Valar described and explained was useful in remembering them. The piece about the Maiar was also interesting, especially since the wizards like Gandalf, Saruman, Radagast, Morinehtar and Romestamo (the two blue wizards whose names Gandalf forgot in the Hobbit) are Maiar, and Gandalf (Olorin) is even mentioned. Also yes, I'm a bit lost regarding Aman? It says that it's in the Middle-Earth but I can't say I have heard of it before. Can't wait to get started of the Quenta Silmarillion to see whether I'm totally lost or if it's going to be alright x) That chart was VERY helpful too, thanks about that =D My notes are, as usual, just a simpler resumé of all this information, so here they are anyway: Edited by arkenstonc, Feb 4 2015, 08:57 AM.

On another note, for people who like metal/hard rock music, I can recommend this album by Blind Guardian, it's called Nightfall in Middle-Earth and it was specifically inspired by The Silmarillion so it's kinda fitting... If you like that kind of music of course x) I'm all about that jazz anyway so it's perfect for me but not for everyone. |
