PART ONE (Bella Swan): Play With Fire
Chapter One: Adelaide
The morning started out like any other-waking up to a sadly empty room, Edward coming to pick me up with Alice in the backseat. She ignored me (as usual), completely fixtaated on her phone. She was texting Jasper, all signs indicated.
"Can't they be disconnected for five minutes?" I thought.
"I know what you're thinking, Bella Swan," Alice said. I blushed and turned around. Her eyes were still glued to her cell. Edward rolled his eyes and muttered something I couldn't hear.
As the three of us walked into English, Alice muttered to us, "I'm going on, are you coming?"
"What?" I asked, completely distracted from my previous thought pattern. Alice slipped a sleek black laptop out of her bag and handed it to me.
"Get on," she commanded. I nodded.
Alice, Jasper, and Edward already occupied the cnat room when I joined. Quickly, I caught up on the conversation.
BellasLullaby: Hello, Bella.
jDude56: *rolls eyes*
BellasLullaby: You'll be fine.
YellowPorscheyGirl1901: how do you know that?
jDude56: *stunned and thoughtful silence*
YellowPorscheyGirl1901: shut up Jazz
I AM GOING TO DIE
BellasLullaby: How do YOU know that??
YellowPorscheyGirl1901: i saw it
BellasLullaby: You can't see it. The dogs are involved.
jDude56: don't doubt her
YellowPorscheyGirl1901: thanx XD :P :) ;) :( XP
I AM GOING TO DIE
"Where's Alice?" I asked Edward as we left the cafeteria. His jaw tightened noticably, but otherwise he gave no indication that he had heard my question. It surprised me when he spoke suddenly, pausing inside the door.
"Alice had...somewhere to be. She'll be back soon. Don't worry, Bella, she's going to be fine."
I nodded, my throat tight. Edward knew how I worried about Alice. The fact that he wouldn't tell me where she was just made me worry more.
During a lecture Mr. Varner was giving as a reveiw, the phone rang. He went ot answer it. We all tried to listen in, me especially. I would be drilling Edward on what he'd heard later.
"Hello?" Mr. Varner said. "Yes, they're her...of course. Right away." He hung the phone up. "Isabella Swan and Edward Cullen?"
I looked up, startled, at the sound of our names.
"Yes?" Edward asked.
"You two need to go down to the front office. There's soneone waiting to pick you up there."
Edward nodded and pulled me out of the building. As soon as we were safely out, I turned to him as much as i could.
"Wha's going on?" I demanded. He didn't turn as he continued to drag me towards the office.
"Alice," he said tensly. I froze, no longer able to hear the sound of my breathing.
"What happened?" i choked out. Edward shook his head.
"I don't know," he whispered. "I couldn't hear..."
We'd reached the office, where Jasper stood waiting by Carlisle's Mercedes.
"You're kidding," Edward muttered under his breath. Jasper shook his head.
"What is going on?" I demanded. Neither answered. Edward pushed me gently into the back of the car.
We drove in silence to the hospital's emergency room doors. I was shaking in the backseat the whole time. My worry increased dramatically as we walked into a room.
My eyes landed first on Jacob, and I vaguely wondered what he was doing there. The vampires usally stayed away from the werewolves, and it made me extremely worried to see him at the hospital in Forks, because Carlisle worked there. Rosalie and Emmett were standing in the back corner, out of the way, while Esme stood by the door. Jasper, who had reached the room ahead of us, had collapsed into the only chair with his head in his hands. Carlisle was nowhere in sight, and Edward was standing next to me-that only left one person missing. Slowly, I turned to face tha bed.
My suspicions were immediately confirmed when I saw Alice laying there, looking two times as small as she really was. Her eyes were closed, and the entire right side of her face and neck looked covered in terrible burns.
"What's your excuse?" Edward asked Jacob. He held up his hands in a gesture of surrender.
"I didn't do anything, okay? I don't even know what happened, there was a fire and I found her collapsed..."
"Lies," Jasper snarled.
"No, " Edward cautioned. "He's telling the truth."
"When is she going to wake up?" Esme asked.
"I don't know," Carlisle said, striding through the door and beginning to examine Alice's burns. "It could be a couple more hours."
The line on the monitor hooked up to her arm jumped up. SO did jasper.
"She's breathing," he announced.
"Excellent," Carlisle said.
A quiet voice behind me murmured, "Hello, Adelaide."
Everyone turned to stare at the stranger with startled eyes. When no one but me was looking, Alice stirred.
