Just played on "troubled waters"
Firing under water was so slow as i would camp and ammo was taken away too.

I thought it has something to do with camping, because of less moving.

Could be, Skid did some experimenting with high campDetect values, so this most probably caused it. I lowered the value for 25%, so we will see.

Whew Camping - how many emails have gone around in the past about this ;)

What is camping - Standing still? Staying in a very small defined area? Capitalizing on spawn spots? Everyone has their own definition of camping when they complain about it.

Camping is part of the game as others have said. It always has been and always will be.

Camping is part of almost any FPS. Hell when I'm playing Halo 3 on Legendary level I'm not running balls out into every fire-fight - that's just down right stupid. No, I camp my ass at a distance using cover to take out players.

Now camping spawn spots used to be our biggest problem - although a 'tactic' of sorts I will admit - it takes the fun out of the game when you are playing in FFA mode. Especially when someone has become very proficient at it - they have taken the time (weeks, months, years) to learn each map and each spawn point and use that knowledge to win.

We have addressed this problem - Dyn has made modifications and provided the admins with the ability to make adjustments to camp detection as well as spawn protection.

So my response to '....so-n-so is camping this map in "this" area' ... well either find another route into that area to take them out and keep going back there and killing them so they get the idea of 'stop camping'....OR stay the fuck out of there / don't go into that area. If you don't go in there they can't kill you.

Personally I think the spawn protection and increased spawn spots is all that is needed - giving a second or so of protection when someone respawns eliminates the instant spawn kills - increasing the number of spawn spots beyond the standard adds another level complexity and helps eliminate spawn spot campers.

Camping is a problem when someone develops entire strategy around it. Same person won't bother much and will camp spawn spots too. If someone has no ideals or morale to play honestly, he will express same behavior at most situations. So, while it's true 200 rockets and ammo regen can make camping easy, it's not what good players do.

I don't mind occasional camping or sometimes someone does it just for fun, but when someone has skill to win fair and uses camping all the time, to get even more frags, then i see that person as someone very pathetic.

Well that pretty much sums up camping i think! im going to give a scenario and see if you guys can relate. you are playing an intense game, a 64 fraglimit map and you are at 58. you are kicking ass, and about to win when all of a sudden someone comes from and beats you. you look at the screen and you see that the person beat you was someone that stands in the corner with his finger on the trigger
How do you stop this from happening? i understand about newbs and not having much skill. but those people arent the ones who are winning. its the ones who have some skill and know that they are doing it. so trying to combat that and not make the game to hard for the brand new player is a very hard issue. we have implemented many things to try and stop this without just kicking someone for doing it. hence the ammo limits. :D
Personally i dont mind it at all, and in fact i kinda like it! there are 9 wepons in q3.
i feel it promotes more skill by becoming accurate with ALL weapons, each with a specific purpose. and really, does it take 999 rockets to kill someone? or 999 machine gun rounds to kill someone? or 999 grenades? you get my point i hope!
So i play for fun but i also play to win. if you use one weapon exclusively you will not beat someone who uses ALL weapons. am i right? or if you win with one its not often. ammo boxes are a good idea i think so at least you have to get it and hope you dont get fragged before you get it.
So please be patient, we will have something to keep everyone happy soon!

I'll definitely look him up some time - I don't get to play often as I'm not to keen on my 1 and 3 year old boys watching me 'kill' constantly :)

I'm not one of those that thinks gaming ruins the minds of kids but when my 3 year old starts playing 'bad guys' with his other friends and runs around pretending to shoot them ... eh the other parents are not exactly happy with it and the other kids don't like it either.

So I play late night and only when I have 'free' time -

Dyn always talks about skill this, and skill that. But the limited ammo sucks, and who cares about campers anyway? I just frag 'em.Why does it seem to take 4 railgun shots to kill someone? I think I'm pretty skilled if I can hit another moving player even once with the rail, so if I'm skilled enough to nail his ass with the first shot, why not make all of the one shot weapons an instant kill? Do I have to prove my skill 4 times in a row just to get a single frag? IF youre already limiting the amount of ammo, then it's only fair to make those weapons a 1 shot kill. Or, you could simply unlimit the ammo on all weapons, which is one of the reasons I started playing this server in the 1st place. Now the maps are all back to the same lame standard maps, eventhough VOGON ANARCHY was supposed to have 187 new maps in rotation. I'm getting very bored playing these same 6 year old maps. WHy keep doing it when there are thousands of maps available to play? Am I the only person here to mention that this is an EXCESSIVE server? We all play it because of the speed, power, and the total ANARCHY of this mod. When I play excessive, I want excessive speed, excessive power, excessive blood, excessive frags, excessive fuckin everything! THis server has all of those things, yet we get 80 bullets with the MG???????? Excessive ammo is the answer. If I wanted to play with limited ammo, I would go back to playing OSP rail only, where I came from. I hope I did not offend anyone, but if the server stays like it is now, I'm moving on elsewhere....................

New maps rotate on FFA, 44 of them + standard. On CTF you have 43 new and standard. We cycle between normal and new maps, so more people can join. This is done mostly because Q3 cannot sent you one map at time when server has a lot of maps -- it sends you all of them at once with 16-20k/s since it uses UDP. This is fixed in ioquake, but you convince people to install it, hehe.

Limiting ammo promotes skill vs. camping, but to be honest, you spawn with 132 bullets, 66 shells, 88 grenades, 88 rockets and so on, so ammo is not really much limited. Or do you need 999 rockets per spawn? I can increase, no problem, but game becomes boring. Plus, ammo regens pretty fast, so it's practically unlimited when you use more than 1 weapon.

There's about 20 additional maps in the rotation. You just gotta wait through the standard ones to hit 'em.

Edit: Ok Dyn you beat me to it. But I just counted the maps in the minipak and got something like 24, not all of which I'm sure are in rotation.

YOU can't... mods and admins can... but we try not to make a habit of it. If you REALLY have to get rid of the post, just EDIT it and delete everything... then leave a little note telling us why there's an empty post.

You are right, but they are rotating 22 x 2, 44 in total. So we are both right, no need to delete posts. Besides if we delete a lot, then it's nothing special when you delete posts from someone who really deserves it.

Well, there is one positive aspect if you delete stupid topics -- people spend more time on threads which are constructive and useful.
