Cheating is bad, not only it reduces your real skill, but also people will start to hate you. Once you are caught cheating, you will never be able to win without others being suspicious about your real skill. So even if you win legit, they won't admit you are legit and you will most probably start to cheat again. Many people are too stupid with cheats and easily discovered, but some of them use them with low-angle settings, so they appear as very good, never fire rockets out of their ass or do u-turns constantly. If you put some time into cheats you can get pretty much transparent and people will start believing you are really good, even when watching demos in slow motion. Needless to say, using cheats that way creates an illusion you are good and at same time reduces your real skill, so in a bit of time you become defendant on cheats, maybe so much you need to replace hardware, so you get around latest PB global ban or you write 10 long emails just to get back to the server, and spend hours convincing others you are legit. It's very sad situation, to see potentially very good players crippling themselves by using cheats. And for what -- a few hollow victories? I tested some of the cheats in Quake 1 days, more out of curiosity and sometimes just for fun, because aimbots were something new and nobody had a clue what is going on. But then, after a few maps i was asking myself what's the point, because i won but i felt nothing. It was not me who won, just some program, written by someone who desperately needs to patch his ego by a few false victories, but we all know this doesn't last, because it's fake, so they need to do it over and over again. After initial excitement and later disgust, i deleted that piece of crap aimbot and i needed almost a whole day to win normally again. Yea, it takes away your real skill, so i can partially understand people who can't stop using them -- they are hooked on this easy-win feeling, literally addicted to it. This is why we occasionally see unbelievable good players play like crap after they can't use aimbot anymore. They even play worse than average players! Also, there is something else. A lot of people care so much about public image and ladders or clan, they will use anything to get a few frags more, even when they feel bad deep inside. I guess this is because how we think today -- we respect people with most cash, no matter how they get it. Only material success matters, cheating and lying is normal for people like that, since it makes everything easier in short run. Of course this makes us dumber and more degenerated with each passing day, but since we forgot about other virtues, not many really care about it. Except a few of us who never change and represent real elite. So now it's the time you decide, are you one of the elites or you want pathetic instant gratification? You see, it may be just a simple online game, but it can tell you a lot about people playing it. |

Couldn't have said it better! I too unfortunately have experimented w/hax in Battlefield 2. It felt great the first few days and by the 5th or 6th day i had no joy gaming in BF2. Although there was the commander hack, never mind :P. I will never use/experiment w/hacks again. There is just no point. I use online gaming to relax and enjoy for the day or few minutes i have to myself. I came from being in a clan member 3 +/- yrs to Q3 and Vogon. I have met some cool people and enjoy the Vogon servers. It's usually the same crowd, a community. No extreme immaturity and just a fun place to compete in a friendly manner! I enjoy it. Thx Dyn for keeping the servers going! I haven't been here long, but I know I will be gaming here for as long as my wife lets me O_o Mordock the forums ROCK!!!!! *:cough cough: Search function needs work! |

Although I know the reasons behind it and for the most part agree with them, I still am of the mind that PB should be ON 24/7 on vogon servers. It would pretty much END all these debates. |

Yes, but PB reduces number of players by 2/3. Plus it requires q3key which many people still don't have, as evident from PB logs and they don't even know every fake key works, even random strings. Which makes me wonder why PB requires it in the first place? Idea was to ban people based on game key, but after key restriction was lifted by id Software this is not needed anymore (sv_strictAuth 0). Just for a test i got myself globally banned and then unbanned by simply changing key in q3key file -- and it was just a random string. However, i use legit key normally. But sometimes players put so much effort into cheating and then write whole essays after being banned, so in that case i more like PB, even if legit people are unable to play, because they couldn't spend 5 min to setup PB properly or wait for it to update. This would be a also good idea for PB -- faster updating, maybe with server-side caching and allowing empty keys for games which don't require keys (or at least unlimited grace period, not just 300s). |

I can't use PB... I'm playing on a mac and through my experience with newer macs and the old released quake 3 clients, I get *much* better (playable) performance with newer engines like ioquake3 -- since PB is closed-source, they can't take advantage of it. Please keep people like us in mind. |

I said PB should be enabled BUT.......it shouldnt be in the process reason being people may have troubles like AbsolutGorjira myself of course Vista is a bitch also and many others whether it be any OS or not with pb enabled WE WILL lose players reagardless(if pb enabled) if they cheat or not i say let the cheaters come, yea they prosper when they get the most points and win but we know they cheat and they know they're CHEATERS but i love playing them and kicking their f*&#$kING ass i dont do it by myself mind u ... ctf "team game" but knowing or having a spectulation of a cheater and winning !!!! is a GREAT feeling man this game puts me in a mode man that i cant even explain i have my good days bad days just like everybody else......................... but when people cheat at this game "it must be for the purpose of being the best right"?. i know people play just to get away or freetime just for kicks or whatever but for me i play to be the best and for ctf if im not im one "OF" and i consider the best players(who dont cheat) who play on any vogon server are better than any cheater( ALL AROUND) who visited us this game is not just about FRAGGIN people you gotta have skills in other areas too anyway im ranting im high had a few beer time to go get some ass from the wifey ahh nevermind DOCK is on ctf ima kick his ass for a minute hahaha moral of this is dont enabled PB but if it does happen i'll still be here kakarott out |

PB has been a pain in the butt for me. I upgraded when they said so to the new version, but then I just waited and waited in forced spec (on another server, not Vogon) and it did not update. So, I exited and did a manual update. And had to do this much more than once in the next few weeks. For whatever reason, PB auto update simply hasn't worked for me, so it seems. pb_sv_update does squat, and I hadn't seen anything about it not working on the PB site. Dyn, I can understand your comment about people not wanting to take 5 minutes to setup or wait for update. In my case, 15 min of spec surely ought to have updated, so it's just adding insult to injury to have to exit and do it by hand. I haven't been on any PB manditory servers lately, so I don't know what's what recently in that department. I just want to play, NOW, and PB ought to be smart enough to tag along in much under 5 minutes. At least I can watch the show until then. Sigh. Blowing off steam. YMMV and all that! |

lol, if ever there was a night of mutual ass kicking it was tonight... great matches! Had to tear myself away. That being said... I agree with you 100% about playing with cheaters. Let them come, it's that much more rewarding when my team wins. On the other hand, there are also less experienced players who can't just crank it to 11 and hang with the cheaters... and I have nothing but sympathy for them... but I think that the admin presence takes care of it for the most part anyway. Bottom line, as I've always said, the downsides of PB far outweigh the benefits, in my humble opinion. Yes, cheaters are the scum of the Earth (well, close at least), and I wil NEVER understand what drives them... but I don't think it's worth enabling PB.

That's exactly why we lose so many players after PB is enabled. PB is too slow to update, for like 80% of clients. Even when we enable multiple updates at once and other settings server-side, updates are still slow for some reason. Also on other servers, we tested it many times. Plus lately PB behaves like a trojan, setting up resident process, without even asking end user if s/he agrees with that! I know it's harmless, but i don't like something to just install and eat CPU resources just because some punk cheats in some game. It's not needed for Q3, but it's installed every time. Here is info how to remove it: http://www.techspot.com/vb/topic74723.html |
